Der Tagebau Inden der RWE Power AG liegt im Rheinischen Braunkohlerevier nahe Inden, zwischen Eschweiler und Jülich. Die Jahresförderung beträgt 22 Millionen Tonnen Braunkohle und dient ausschließlich der Versorgung des Kraftwerks Weisweiler. Die Kohleflöze sind bis zu 45 Meter mächtig. Der Abbau erfolgt mit Hilfe von Schaufelradbaggern, die Wiederverfüllung vor der Rekultivierung mit Absetzern. In diesem Betrieb sind 850 Menschen beschäftigt. Voraussichtlich 2030 ist der Tagebau ausgekohlt.

This Sunday the sun was shining like it had not for a long time. That meant I could go out and try a spot in Nothberg, near the train line between Aachen and Köln. Besides several regional trains in both directions, such as the RE 10120, the Thalys nº 9448 connecting Essen to Paris Nord showed up with its crimson and grey livery. This time I decided not to include the Weisweiler power plant inside the crop, to avoid creating a distraction, but I am still not sure if it was the right decision (if such a thing exists in these quite subjective matters)...
Om vliegas, dat ontstaat bij de verbranding van bruinkool, af te vangen wordt krijt als filter gebruikt. Energiegigant Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk (RWE) koopt krijt in bij Lhoist voor haar centrales zoals Frimmersdorf, Neurath, Niederaußem en Weisweiler. RheinCargo verzorgt het transport van krijt, ook wel poederkalk of kalkmeel genoemd, vanaf groeve Flandersbach bij Rohdenhaus naar Neuss, Gustorf, Niederaußem en Frenz. Vanaf deze emplacementen brengen Werkbahnloks van RWE de wagons naar de losplaatsen.

After finishing the digging in the mine agter brown coal the German RWE have plans to change this region, where the surface of the earth has been exhausted to 300 meters deep in to a lake district. Hopefully the result will be there as it's sad nowadays to see how intensely ruined the landscape here is. There are several villages already disappeared into the gap and there are still more to come.

The pietre dure (hardstone) plaques on this cabinet date from the late 1700s; they were probably made by Italian craftsmen and brought home as souvenirs by Northern European tourists. Connoisseurs appreciated the variety and rarity of the stones and artisans' skillful arrangement of them into mosaic and relief designs. Because of their value and popularity with collectors, such plaques were sometimes mounted into specially made and suitably grand cabinets.
The catalogues of two sales held during the French Revolution describe the pair of this cabinet, made about twenty years earlier. William Beckford, a wealthy English connoisseur of hardstones, probably purchased the other cabinet late in the 1700s. He may have ordered this cabinet to be made with identical gilt bronze mounts and dimensions to match the earlier one.

When we were on the last level of the tower it began to rain and we musted go downstairs to the 8th level....and we waited...it was a little wet around us, but we thought it will become better soon...and we were right.
Suddenly as fast as the rain came, the sun looked out of the clouds and we could see the rain far away.
it was a great feeling!
on the right you see the power station of Eschweiler/Weisweiler with the new town Inden/Altdorf in the foreground.
Far away, behind where it was raining cats and dogs, you can see the first mountains of the Eifel, a low mountain range.
Inden - North Rhine-Westphalia - Germany
The opencast mining Inden (operator: RWE Power AG) is located in the 'Rheinisches Braunkohlerevier' near Inden, between Eschweiler and Jülich. The annual subsidy is 22 million tonnes of brown coal and serves exclusively to supply the Weisweiler power plant. The coal seams are up to 45 meters thick. The excavation is carried out with the aid of bucket wheel excavators, the refilling before recultivation with spreaders. This company employs 850 people. The opencast mine is expected to deliver brown coal until 2030.
The large-scale dismantling made it necessary for some villages to be completely abandoned and the inhabitants had to be resettled. In the population there was, however, a vehement opposition, but the resettlement of the opencast mining operation is regarded as inevitable, since the coal mining from the open pit is legally "for the benefit of the general public". The Rheinbraun AG buys the properties and houses of the residents to demolish them subsequently.
We bleven nog wat van het uitzicht genieten aan de Hammerbrücke en konden zo onder andere ook nog een Thalys tussen Parijs en Essen op foto zetten, evenals een klassiek motorstel van de NMBS als lokale 'internationale' trein tussen Aachen en Spa-Géronstère.
Na de doortocht van de Thalys kregen we een berichtje van Mattias dat hij perfect op tijd in Antwerpen-Noord vertrokken was met zijn trein. We moesten dus nog een drietal uur weten te overbruggen voordat hij in Aachen zou aankomen en dus hadden we nog ruimschoots de tijd om even naar Stolberg (Rheinl) te trekken.
Achteraf gezien bleek dat misschien niet de beste keuze want door de noordoostelijke windrichting dreven alle condensatiewolken uit de koeltorens van de bruinkoolcentrale in Weisweiler, pal onze richting uit! Maar goed, we stonden hier nu en we zouden er het beste van maken, niet?!
Met wisselend succes - en dus ook met wisselende bewolking ;-) - konden we er een paar Talenten van de Euregiobahn op foto zetten, evenals een paar locs van de serie 146 met een stam dubbeldekkers.
Bij de doortocht van ICE 13 (tja... het is een nummer zoals een ander) viel het zongaatje dan gelukkig toch even op het goede plekje - wie zei daar weer 13 ;-)
Licht uit, spot aan dus voor deze ICE 4611 'Düsseldorf' van Brussel naar Frankfurt.
Deze ICE 13 (een van de nieuwe ICE's sinds december 2016) kent in België trouwens een ietwat merkwaardig traject want door een gebrek aan een vrij rijpad in de Brusselse Noord-Zuid-verbinding (deze ICE vertrekt om 8u24, pal in het spitsuur dus), rijdt deze ICE via het westelijke ringspoor rond Brussel en vervalt dus de reguliere stop in Brussel-Noord. Een klein unicum dus...

Der ICE 4611 'Düsseldorf' durchfährt am Morgen des 19. April 2017 mit einer kleinen Verspätung wegen Baumassnahmen im Bahnhof Stolbergs, das Bahnhofsgelände von Stolberg (Rheinl).
Nach dem ICE auf der Hammerbrücke war das schon der zweite ICE den wir aufs Bild setzen konnten.

ICE 4611 'Düsseldorf' is passing the surroundings of the station of Stolberg (Rheinl) whilst working as ICE International from Brussels (Belgium) to Frankfurt (Main) (Germany).
This was already the second ICE that day, after the ICE on the 'Hammerbrücke'.

Na de doortocht van de ICE op de Hammerbrücke konden we ook nog de eerste Thalys richting Duitsland fotografisch vastleggen. We hadden daarmee dan ook alle treinstellen gehad die hier planmatig voorbijkomen. Tijd om te verhuizen dus naar Stolberg.
Dit is altijd wel een leuke plek, alleen bleek het bij aankomst misschien niet de beste keuze te zijn.
Ondanks het feit dat het nog erg zonnig was, werd de zon daar gehinderd door de wolken die van de koeltoren van Weisweiler afkomstig waren. Verhuizen was echter geen optie, Mattias had al laten weten dat hij perfect op tijd vertrokken was, we moesten dus in de buurt van Aachen blijven en hopen dat we met de wisselende bewolking succes zouden hebben.
Bij deze Euregiobahn zat alles snor. Samen met een lokale fotograaf konden we beide verkehrsrote Talenten - nou ja er zit wel wat afwisseling in de kleur - op gevoelige chip zetten, na hun rondje rond Aachen.
Als we even vergelijken met deze foto van zeven jaar eerder is er hier toch wel het één en ander veranderd!

Blick auf den nördlichen Teil des Tagebaus Inden, der bereits wieder verfüllt wird. Im Einsatz ist der Absetzer zum Verfüllen mit dem Erdreich, das am anderen Ende des Tagebaus gerade weggebaggert wird.
