In 1981, Crumb produced and edited a new comic magazine called “Weirdo” which included the work of other artists. In the mid-eighties, Robert decided to let Peter Bagge (and eventually Aline) take over the job as editor of Weirdo so that he could spend more time doing his own comics. While still contributing to “Weirdo,” he created the “Hup 1-4” series in the late 1980s and early '90s.

Weirdo was a comix magazine created by Robert Crumb in the early 80s. Crumb was the editor of Weirdo for issues #1 - #9. Peter Bagge took over that responsibility starting with issue #10 and continued in that role through issue #17. Aline Kominsky-Crumb then took over and was the editor for the remaining issues except for #25 which was edited by Peter Bagge. The covers for all 28 issues of Weirdo were drawn by R. Crumb. They are all magazine size with white guts.

Weirdo's final issue, #28, an internationally themed 68-page giant titled "Verre D'eau" (in French, "glass of water"), was published in 1993.

Barry McGee, Clare Rojas, Brad Kahlhamer, Kembra Pfahler, Bruce LaBruce, Dave Schubert, Dearrraindrop, Evan Gruzis, Gavin McInnes, Opening Ceremony, Jack Pierson, Jade Berreau, Keegan McHargue, Kunle Martins, Patrick Griffin, Maripol, Mat Brinkman, Robert Lazzarini, Shepard Fairey, Xylor Jane, Hanah Liden, Yoko Ono, and many, many more.

POSTERMAT was a fantastic shop on E 8th street in the Village where kids in the 80s and 90s got the best punk, indie, impossible-to-find posters for their teenage bedrooms. We never got to see what this place was like, and since we couldn’t even find images anywhere, we decided to recreate what we think this grungy haven might have looked like in our gallery for a new generation of underground weirdos to experience. Posters everywhere! Racks all around the room, slapping back and forth, pins, stickers and patches, music and more. If you remember the old Postermat, come tell us if we got it right! Bring photos if you have them too!!!

The idea for this exhibition came from artist Aaron Bondaroff at dinner this past summer. A-ron frequented Postermat as a kid and helped us develop the feel of the show. The exhibition was made possible by generous support from LEVIS and in partnership with Proof 7 the best new printers in New York City.

All the hay I put in their shed is now outside, and they pile up here, next to the shed, even today during an ice storm.

I know they can all fit in the shed because something spooked them and they all huddled in there while I watched.
