The website shows the view before this building became so tall with a clear view straight to the Empire State Building. For me, it ruined the overall city view.

The Edge has a protruding 100-stories-high observation deck with a glass floor and 360-degree NYC views.

Happy to announce that this image of a White-throated Dipper taken in Kuusamo, Finland got Highly Commended in the Birds in their Environment category in the Bird Photographer of the Year 2018 competition. It seems that the website is not in perfect order, but got the confirmation per email today and the image will also be published in the respective Bird Photographer of the Year 2018 book.

Bird Photographer of the Year is a global photographic competition; a celebration of avian beauty and diversity and therefore proud to be among the commended photographers.

Background info:

Went with a good friend of mine (Tapio Kaisla) to Kuusamo in Finland. Placed just against the Arctic Circle its a pure magic place during the Winter... well and I suppose during the Summer as well, but haven't been there yet during that part of the year.

Arrived in Kuusamo when it was below -20°C and climbed up a small hill called Konttainen to photograph stars. Not happy with any of the results so my first upload is an image from the 2nd day. After visiting Myllykoski in the Oulanka National Park we drove to Käylänkoski, which is a rapid that doesn't freeze during the cold Winter. There are therefore lots of White-throated Dippers (Cinclus cinclus) and counted 10-15 different individuals on this particular day. As usual when photographing 'Dippers' I try to use a slow shutter speed. Those birds are active and don't sit still for a very long time.

Hard work... but happy with this result, and it seems I wasn't the only one who enjoyed this image.

I love the country but I’m a city boy at heart so I certainly liked my stop over in Auckland. Such a nice and lovable urban sprawl.

The FAA website(where you go to register your drone) says not to fly over 400'. At first I was nervous to fly over 50ft, now I get to 400' and just wish I could go higher! Some day I will probably break the rules and go higher but for now I'll keep in on the straight and narrow.

This photo was taken using the the 3 shot AEB from the DJI GO app. The app makes flying and shooting soooooo easy.

Here is a short video from the same morning.

« In memoriam et exemplum »

The paint underneath the organ represents the Last Judgment; this set is remarkable for its size, its quality and layout mirroring (Creation of the World / Judgement). This gigantic painting of the Last Judgment (1474-1484) originally covered about 200 m2. Painted in tempera, there are three registers: heaven, earth and hell where the wicked gesticulate in compartments dedicated to the seven deadly sins.

I went to the beach determined not to get wet. I wore somewhat waterproof shoes, but was adamant about keeping them dry. I had scouted out a spot to shoot for sunset earlier, but literally about 10 minutes before the sunset, I chickened out and decided that the composition I had settled on was no good. Like a chicken with its head cutoff, I started running up and down the beach frantically trying to find a spot to set up. I found this nice shiny rock that was reflecting the colors of the sky quite nicely, so I decided to try and work it into the composition. Unfortunately, this rock was surrounded by water, and any images of it from the dry sand were pretty crappy. I wasn't going home empty handed, so I rolled up the jeans and trudged through the ocean to set up on top of this rock. As cold as the water was, I'd say it was worth the sandy shoes. :)

Obviously, this one gave me a hard time in the post-processing. Me and my straight lines and angles did not combine with the hideous condition of this house....

And what about the back-light? And the evil parking lots?

And the house-number?

This was taken on the same day as ‘Mardale Life’ (www.flickr.com/photos/graemekelly/8251997239/in/set-72157...). I had just got my shot and was thinking of packing up and when I wandered over here to get some water for cooking and found this viewpoint. I quickly scuttled over with my camera and set up on a ledge overlooking the beck just in time to capture the colours after sunset. This is near the top of Rowantreethwaite Beck (quite a mouthful!), as it makes its way down to Haweswater reservoir. In this shot I’ve used the course of the water to lead into the lake, which then forks towards the mountains and the sunset, using both the tree and ‘The Rigg’ as it’s known as focal points. ‘The Rigg’ is the plantation out you can see thrust out on a spur heading into the reservoir.

A bit of fun with last night’s lunar eclipse. I had in in mind to do a sequence of the different stages of the eclipse but armed with only a 105mm lens I was going to struggle. My solution was a composite of 5 heavily cropped images of the moon combined with a shot looking across Start Bay towards Start Point lighthouse. The moons are maybe a little on the large side but after staying up till 3.30am I wasn’t going to leave them as little pinpricks! Hope you enjoyed the spectacle yourself!

Looking straight up inside the Rotunda of the Tate Britain Art Gallery.

From Wikipedia, "In 2012, Tate Britain announced that it had raised the £45 million required to complete a major renovation, largely thanks to a £4.9 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £1 million given by Tate Members. The museum stayed open throughout the three phases of renovation. Completed in 2013, the newly designed sections were conceived by the architects Caruso St John and included a total of nine new galleries, with reinforced flooring to accommodate heavy sculptures.

A second part was unveiled later that year, the centrepiece being the reopening of the building's Thames-facing entrance as well as a new spiral staircase beneath its rotunda. The circular balcony of the rotunda's domed atrium, closed to visitors since the 1920s, was reopened. The gallery also now has a dedicated schools' entrance and reception beneath its entrance steps on Millbank and a new archive gallery for the presentation of temporary displays."
