Yesterday my mom asked me if I could take Gramma to her eye appointment
at the USC Doheny Eye Institute. Her appointment was at 10:30. There was
a little confusion at first about where we were going, because my mom
said she needed to go to "USC". USC is of course at the 110 and the 10.
But this place is at the 710 and the 10. Just to add confusion, on the
way my gramma stated that we were going to neither the USC medical
center or USC - were were going to UCLA. Ugh!
0 - Its a smoggy day but the view out the 4th floor window is pleasant
as only hospital views can be. You can see the tiny red umbrellas below
where you can buy overpriced cappuccinos and pretend your not surrounded
by sickness and suffering.
1 - Your standard stainless steel elevator with artful sterile tile. I
took this shot because no-one else does, except maybe elevator people.
Honestly, I do admire the strong lines of the architecture here. It
makes you feel very safe and in control (through being controlled - a
line from a dominatrix in TV's "House")
2 - Shooting down the corridor into the bowels of the beast. Standard
red carpet and fake plant is in evidence. It is mislabeled exit because
once you go in, you never come out! (Okay, I exaggerate - this is an
outpatient eye clinic but still....)
3 - The Standard Office Directory. I'm sure that historians will pour
over this with great interest. However I took this shot to demonstrate
how hard it is to shoot through glass. The problem is the enormous
amount of ambient light.
4 - While Gramma was having her laser surgery and I was getting lunch,
an ambulance and fire engine arrived at the eye institute...
5 - ...which is amusing because the USC Hospital is about 100ft away. (I
asked a paramedic on the way in why they came - he relayed that the USC
hospital does not have an emergency room, and that they don't have the
doctors or staff to deal with emergency situations. Reasonable, but I
still think this is a silly waste of resources.)
P.S. I'm somewhat peeved that this will end up posting to flickr
incorrectly and also to my blog incorrectly. My wish list is steadily
growing for this whole photo blogging scene:
1 - Set tags in the email
2 - Optionally post and comment each picture separately (perhaps using a
convention like the one in this message) from the same email,
particularly important for flickr. Ideally I could post separately to
flicker and then in a group to my blog (perhaps in a collage that
map-linked each photo back to flickr - now that would be sweeeet).
3 - I'm actually quite pleased with the system of writing email to the
blog and then sending it later when I'm online. However, I want to keep
Picasa and my blog more in sync. In particular I'd like the "Send Photos
via Email" to include any captions that I've added. Or do these go into
EXIF and the text needs to be extracted by flickr or whatever? Hmm.
The ideal situation would be that picasa's API or file formats would be
easy to read. You would do your editing and basic edits and file
renaming there. Another program would post your images to flickr,
keeping track of the final URL. Yet another program would allow you to
compose blog entries with placeholders for your photos. Once the photos
are uploaded the placeholders are replaced with real URLs and the final
thing posted. This blog poster would ideally work sync or async - if its
a webapp it means that you need to be running a server locally, which is
ok by me. Surely a simple servlet container and DB can be really really
small!
