As web application attacks turn into massive campaigns against large corporations across the globe, web application firewall data increases exponentially, leaving security experts with a big data mess to analyze. Pinpointing real attacks in a sea of security event noise becomes an almost impossible tedious task. In this presentation, we will unveil a unique platform for collecting, analyzing and distilling Petabytes of WAF security intelligence information. Using the collected data, we will discuss the OWASP ModSecurity Core Rule Set project's accuracy, and reveal common attack trends, as well as our impressions and suggestions for how to wisely make the best out of the CRS project.

Demonstrating a possible design to show which streets have been plowed, when, and in which direction. The fade from green to red means that the street, based on measured attributes like snowfall rate, may need additional plowing.

An issue with the current Chicago Plow Tracker is that it doesn't tell you the status of the streets, but only the status of the plows. I believe it's more important to show which streets have been plowed.

There's a very lengthy discussion about the Chicago Plow Tracker on Grid Chicago.

Our greatest annoyance?

Keeping track of usernames and passwords.

Why?

Because every website, web service, web application, microsite, microblog, blog cloud, digital fanzine, special interest you-name-it, has a different set of rules for creating a username and password. It’s completely out of hand. You know what we’re talking about. The permutations and combinations are endless. 6-9 characters, 5-8 characters, 11-14 characters, no set length, no set strength, special characters, no special characters, upper case, lower case, upper and lower case. If you’re like us (active on the world wide web), you’re creating new usernames and passwords every day. The more you do online, the more usernames and passwords you have to remember. We’ve come to rely on the Forgot Username? or Forgot Password? option. But that comes with its own set of problems. Like the security questions. What is your Mom’s maiden name? Good question. What is your favorite restaurant? Not-so-good question. Hasn’t anyone realized that subjective questions defeat the purpose? Who knows what your favorite restaurant was 2 years ago when you first set up the account. You probably wrote it down somewhere, but it’s for your shopbop.com Wish List, so doubtful that you held on to it. To make matters your username and password often can’t be re-sent. They can only be reset. Another can of worms. You can’t reset it to your go-to standard because you probably used some version of it the first time. It has to be unique. And thanks to this, you probably have a long list of random usernames and passwords in your life. Worse yet, and quite possibly the most annoying, the reset password in person mandate. WTF?! We could go on, but we’re guessing that you’re probably already nodding vehemently.

Our solution?

A nifty website called alice. alice manages all of your usernames and passwords in one easy-to-navigate web format. Every time you create a new username and password, you’ll be given the option to ‘add it to alice.’ Only you can access your alice, and, fear not, its security standards rival those at Fort Knox.

Why alice?

The name alice is an homage to Little Miss Alice’s tumble down the rabbit hole. Picture it like this. You’re adventuring around the infinite vastness that is the world wide web. It’s a bit like falling down the rabbit hole every time you open up your browser, isn’t it? Every homepage is like a door with tons of stuff, ahem content, behind it. And these days, to take full advantage of said content, you invariably need a username and password.

And so, without further ado, we present to you... alice. That is, the alice that could be realized with 4 hours, 50 US dollars, and this 15 images or less Flickr set.

Thanks for looking.

Data is all around us. Whether it's log files generated from mobile and web applications, in-game player activity, or the deluge of information from trading floors, social apps, or geo-spacial monitoring. Collecting, analyzing, and responding to that data helps you stay in tune with your customers, business, and market trends. Analyzing your data while it's fresh allows you to react much quicker than the traditional end-of-day batch jobs we're often used to.
