Urban Age Institute's Meeting of the Minds drawn to Richmond's energy

RICHMOND -- Hundreds of city planners, organizations, business people and other "thought leaders" from around the world are converging in Richmond this week to discuss cutting-edge ideas like alternative currencies, cars that run on refuse and energy-efficient buildings that are already transforming society.
The high-powered, invitation-only Meeting of the Minds is an annual event hosted by the Urban Age Institute, a San Francisco organization that works to promote innovation between cities in urban planning, policy and the environment. And unlike similar gatherings, the focus is on solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems, from congested streets to the quickly diminishing supply of fresh water.
"There is a wealth of innovation that is waiting to be tapped by government," said Gordon Feller, president of Meeting of the Minds and the director of Cisco Systems. "We're trying to be the connector between people. Nobody needs to reinvent a great invention. They need to steal it and bring it to their cities."
Among presenters at the two-day event were Richmond company Simularity which uses mobile sensors to test air quality throughout the city. The firm's findings were surprising -- more affluent neighborhoods such as Marina Bay and Point Richmond registered higher amounts of nitrogen oxide than some nearby low-income areas.
"We generally expect poorer neighborhoods to have worse air quality, but we're finding that it's not always true," said Ray Richardson, the company's founder and chief technology officer.
Richardson attributed the higher rate of nitrogen dioxide in certain neighborhoods to their proximity to the Port of Richmond and other industrial concerns.
Another presenter is Lenny Mendonca, the creator of a new beer called Mavericks Tunnel Vision IPA, which uses recycled water. He said he came up with the idea as a response to California's ongoing water shortage.
"When there wasn't a municipal water system, monks would take water from streams and boil it as part of the beer making process," said Mendonca, who owns the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. "So we had beer before we had clean water and I'm just continuing that tradition."
Car manufacturer Toyota used the event to unveil its new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai. The zero-emission car uses hydrogen stored in tanks, along with oxygen from the air to generate electricity. The car retails for $58,000 before rebates, can go for more than 300 miles on a single cell and unlike other electric vehicles, takes just five minutes to refuel. Its only discharge is water that exits through the vehicle's tailpipe.
"It's basically a zero-emission, non-combustion powertrain," said John Hanson, national manager of advanced technology for Toyota.
In the spirit of disruption and innovation, two buzzwords that were thrown around a lot during the event, the conference included a "hackathon" where both students and companies exchanged ideas. Among them: a Web application that allows residents in poor neighborhoods to swap produce, another that connects day laborers with people who need their services, and a workout app that gives users the chance to compete against others and offers a system of rewards.
In the afternoon, visitors had a chance to see innovation in action by participating in one of 10 workshops. These included a bicycle tour through the future site of the Berkeley Global Campus, a planned state of the art University of California research facility in Richmond; a demo on drones and their uses for law enforcement, agriculture and fire fighting; and a visit to UC Berkeley's FLEXLAB, which is working on energy-efficient solutions for buildings.
The event, an annual gathering of problem solvers now in its ninth year, is usually held in large cities, such as Detroit or Toronto. But organizers said they chose Richmond, a city of just over 100,000 people, because of local leaders' willingness to try different approaches to typical urban problems. These include innovative policing strategies, the use of social impact bonds to purchase blighted properties, investments in youth organizations and urban farming initiatives.
"There's a lot of energy around doing something different and we think they're doing something right," Feller said.

Outside of work, Ryan is a is a lifelong cyclist and founder of the athletics design website Athletedataviz. This is his third time speaking at a Tableau User Group event.

Two new mobile web applications are now available for all U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Ansbach military community members. The Digital Garrison app and U.S. Army Maintenance Application (ArMA).
The Age of Income was "The Big Marketing Campaign" of 2013. We built a Website, a Web Application, and a whole suite of marketing collateral.
I started out by meeting with the marketers and listening to their needs and the description of the project. The goal of this project would be to help investors prepare for their retirement. What I kept hearing was that Invesco was giving them the tools to make it to retirement with their needs met. While looking through photos of Ama Dablam, i found a photo of hikers, who looked like they were about to make the trek. I started out by removing the hikers from their background, and in several of the pieces you can see that I tried to give the appearance that they were getting closer to their goal.. the mountaintop.
Once we had all the collateral, we were faced with "how do we present all this material to the end user?" and we discussed a typical pocket folder. I had the idea that we create a pocket folder that would look like a backpack that the hikers would wear.
Now I had sold the idea of a backpack, I had to create one that would work. While I could not make it literal, I created a fabric pattern in photoshop, and created stitching patterns in illustrator and created a pocket folder in the image of a backpack that would hold every "tool" we were providing. We printed this piece with some complex die cuts and an aqueous spot dull coating. The coating effect is visible in some of the images.

First carved in tortoiseshell, ox and deer bone, and bronzeware, Chinese characters were said to each contain their own world. Projected on the facade of the ArtScience Museum, viewers can participate by ‘swiping’ the Chinese characters onto the facade of the building using a web application. The result is a colourful, multi-sensory experience that continuously evolves as images are released from these Chinese characters, while influencing and changing each other within its own immersive, computer-generated world.
