The accession to the throne of King George VI necessitated the preparation of a new series of stamps bearing his portrait; he appeared in ordinary attire. The new issue of 1-cent, 2-cent, and 3-cent stamps released on April 1, 1937, was the 1st series with the sovereign's portrait. He had been portrayed as Duke of York on the 2-cent brown in the King George V Silver Jubilee Canadian issue of 1935.

Registered Airmail - TRAIL, B.C. to Edinburgh, Scotland - April 1, 1937 / 6 cent air mail rate within Canada + 10 cents registration fee = 16¢
Trans-Atlantic mail service was not available until 1939. Air mail service to Great Britain before this was for air mail conveyance within Canada only. The rate was 6 cents for the first ounce and 5 cents for each additional ounce. In June 1939, Trans-Atlantic air mail service was inaugurated. The rate for mail to Britain from Canada was 30 cents for each half ounce.

TRAIL is a city in the West Kootenay region of the Interior of British Columbia, Canada. It was named after the Dewdney Trail, which passed through the area. The town was first call Trail Creek or Trail Creek Landing, and the name was shortened to Trail in 1897. The history of Trail really began in 1891 when the first ore from the nearby Le Roi mine was taken to the landing here for shipment, via the Columbia River, to the smelters at Butte, Montana. The population in 1937 was 10,500.
The TRAIL CREEK Post Office was opened - 1 July 1891; renamed TRAIL Post Office - 1 January 1897.

Petalodus ohioensis Safford, 1853 - fossil shark tooth from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA.
This remarkable fossil fish tooth comes from the youngest fully marine unit in all of Ohio - the Skelley Member. The Skelley is one of several marine intervals in the Conemaugh Group, an Upper Pennsylvanian cyclothemic succession in eastern Ohio that contains nonmarine shales, marine shales, siltstones, sandstones, coals, marine limestones, and chert ("flint"). The Skelley Member consists of a limestone facies and a shale facies. This fossil was apparently eroded from the shale facies.
The tooth is phosphatic - it is composed of apatite (calcium phosphate). It comes from Petalodus ohioensis, a Late Paleozoic shark. The tooth morphology of Petalodus indicates it was a shell crushing shark. Petalodus likely fed principally on calcareous shelled invertebrates such as brachiopods and bivalves.
Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Chondrichthyes, Petalodontiformes, Petalodontidae
Stratigraphy: shale facies of the Skelley Member, upper Conemaugh Group, lower Virgilian Series, Upper Pennsylvanian
Locality: Noble County, eastern Ohio, USA

Graphical notes of presentation presented by Malaska et al., during the Geological Society of America annual meeting in 2016.
In the graphic, the steep-sided lakes and empty basins on Saturn's moon Titan are consistent with karstic dissolution of the surrounding landscape. The graphic in the upper right shows how a plateau can be slowly dissolved to give sinkholes, then polygonal "egg-box" terrain, then finally remnant ridges. These are consistent with the terrains observed by the Cassini spacecraft during it's flybys of Saturn's moon Titan.

The upper meter of the subsoil horizon from a Dothan soil located in South Carolina, exhibiting an increasing amount of plinthite with depth. The reddish areas are very firm, dense and brittle, and are weakly cemented with iron. The area below the knife is root limiting in that zones that roots can enter are 10 or more centimeters apart (continuous phase plinthite).
This pedon would be classified as a "Plinthudult" if determined to have one or more horizons within 150 cm of the mineral soil surface in which plinthite either forms a continuous phase or constitutes one-half or more of the volume. Currently, there is not an established method for determining the quantity of plinthite nor an agree-to definition for "continuous phase" for plinthic materials. This layer would qualify as a "plinthic horizon" as proposed.
A water emersion disaggregation method (or slake test) has been developed to quantify plinthite, however, this method only identifies those plinthic materials that are cemented. Due to past application (primarily in Texas and California) the cementation requirement has not received unanimous acceptance in the soil science community. A proposed definition for "continuous phase" plinthite has been submitted. It is essentially the same as for other materials requiring a continuous phase in Soil Taxonomy.

According to USDA-Soil Taxonomy, Plinthudults are the more or less freely drained Udults that have a large amount of plinthite in the argillic or kandic horizon. They are mainly in intertropical regions and in some areas are extensive. Historically, they have not been identified in the United States and the great group has been provided for use in other parts of the world. As indicated by this image, this concept should be revisited.
