It was too easy to sit down and watch some hockey playoffs, but the conditions looked right to bring out the camera. Ironically the quote from Wayne Gretzky came to mind; "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."
So thanks Mr. Gretzky for motivating me to turn off the TV, getting off my tuckus, and going outside ;)

March 11, 2025 Wayne Gretzky does not represent our Canadian values. He does not stand with Canada. 🍁🍁🍁

A blur of color across the ice, a sharp crack, and a cold puck sizzles past the goalie yet again.

"High-speed skating and heads-up play characterize the heroes of the ice who will be featured in this new series. A different player will appear each year.
First to arrive is the greatest scorer in NHL history. Now with the New York Rangers, Wayne Gretzky previously skated for the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings.
Known for unprecedented 200-point seasons, "Gretz" holds or shares more than 60 NHL titles.
He explains his winning technique simply: "I sake to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been."

Excerpt from brainproject.ca:
The Fabric of Canada
Wayne Gretzky, a.k.a. "The Great One," learned to skate on his family's backyard rink in Brantford, Ont., and went on to become a National Hockey League legend. His brain sculpture, rendered by artist David Arrigo, is a celebration of hockey that pays tribute to pond hockey on Lake Louise, dedicated parents who spend early mornings in dressing rooms, and memorable hockey moments for Canada on the world stage.
Not Forgotten
Through a collage of fabric, embellished with hand embroidery, lace and trim, neuro artist Laura Bundesen explores the brain’s functions through colour, form and texture, including two distinctly different hemispheres. This piece is in loving memory of her stepmother who suffered from dementia and didn’t recognize her the last time they met, but said “Laura… that’s one of my favourite names.” Somehow, somewhere inside, she had not forgotten.
A Beautiful Mind
This work of art is inspired by the beauty of nostalgia. The artist asked 50 of her closest friends and family to describe a motif, flower or symbol that represents happiness in their lives during childhood, adolescence and adulthood. She then painted each of these onto the brain to embody the distinct and individualized power of memory in our lives.
Inked Memories
Toronto artist Sarah Skrlj sought inspiration from the idea of tattoos and memories being intrinsically linked. The very act of a tattoo is having a distinct memory, moment, object or person with you forever.
Sadly, Alzheimer's and dementia inevitably cause memories to diminish and wither, but with tattoos, the potential is there for those memories to stay alive... even after the person's memory has faded.
This life size bronze statue of Wayne Gretzky, aka the Great One, sits at one of the many doorways to the Sports Hall of Fame. At this time of year the sun is very low in the sky and the shadows provided are unique to December. The shadows made this otherwise stark statue even more interesting.
The Ceremony began at 3 am here in Sweden and went on for three hours, but it was well worth it - what a wonderful ceremony, so beautiful that I had tears in my eyes a lot of the time - I got so emotional because of the insight of how these games gather people together from all around the world. Thank you wonderful Vancouver and Canada! (The lower shots is from the TV *lol* - couldn't resist)
(Go Sweden!!! :))
Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson formerly of the Edmonton Oilers team that established a dynasty and won 5 Stanley Cups between 1984 - 1990 at Rexall Place, originally the Northland Coliseum in Edmonton. Tonight the last game was played in the facility which opened in 1974. It is being replaced by Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton. Gretzky, Messier and Anderson, in this photo taken in 1980, are having fun onstage in Victoria BC as guests of David Foster in an early fund raiser for the David Foster Foundation. Foster, the great Canadian musician, song writer and producer of some of the top stars in pop music started this foundation to raise money for Canadian children that needed life-saving organ transplants and couldn't afford the operation. The three former Edmonton Oilers were on the team when they won their five Stanley Cup rings. There was a ceremony tonight, April 6, at Rexall Place to celebrate the years of hockey in what has been described as the "Old Barn". The three superstars above were in attendance, looking a tad older. The venue has witnessed NHL history, from the first opening game with a sold-out arena on Nov. 10, 1974, to the crowd's roar when a 20-year-old Wayne Gretzky scored a record 50 goals in 39 games on Dec. 30, 1981.

After 52 years in business (opened in 1961) and the home of so many skaters and hockey players another iconic LA landmark bites the dust due to a greedy landlord who doubled the rent and now Feb 2, 2014 will be the last day for this venerable ice arena. When your rent goes from 34,000 a month to 68,000 there is only one thing you have to know and that is the buildings owner want's you gone and so it shall be for another historic LA landmark despite the community protests and petitions to save this beloved ice rink. www.latimes.com/local/la-me-ice-rink-20140112,0,5950834.s...

Wayne Douglas Gretzky CC (born January 26, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and former head coach. He played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League for four teams from 1979 to 1999. Nicknamed "the Great One", he has been called the greatest ice hockey player ever by the NHL based on surveys of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers and coaches. Gretzky is the leading career point scorer and assist producer in NHL history and has more assists than any other player has total career points. He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season, a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, Gretzky scored more than 100 points in 15 professional seasons. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records.
New York Rangers (1996–1999) - Gretzky was originally going to sign with the Vancouver Canucks after his tenure with the Blues ended during the summer of the 1996 offseason. Canucks president and general manager Pat Quinn and Gretzky had verbally agreed to a contract during the night that they were going to formally sign the next morning, but Stan McCammon, the CEO of Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment (the ownership group of the Canucks) ordered Quinn to call and demand that Gretzky sign that same night; when Quinn called Gretzky and demanded that he sign right now, the deal was called off due to Gretzky not liking the Canucks' new pushiness. Gretzky ended his professional playing career by signing with the New York Rangers, where he played his final three seasons and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals in 1997. The Rangers were defeated in the Conference Finals in five games by the Philadelphia Flyers, despite Gretzky leading the Rangers in the playoffs with 10 goals and 10 assists. For the first time in his NHL career, Gretzky was not named captain, except for a brief period as acting captain in 1998 when captain Brian Leetch was injured and out of the line-up. After the 1996–97 season, Mark Messier signed a free agent contract with the Vancouver Canucks, ending the brief reunion of Messier and Gretzky after just one season. The 1997 playoff run was Gretzky's last as a player, and the Rangers did not return to the playoffs until 2006, well after Gretzky retired. Along with Jaromir Jagr, he topped the NHL in the 1997–98 season with 67 assists. It was the 16th time in 19 seasons that Gretzky earned at least a share of the league lead in the statistic.
In 1997, before his retirement, The Hockey News named a committee of 50 hockey experts (former NHL players, past and present writers, broadcasters, coaches, and hockey executives) to select and rank the 50 greatest players in NHL history. The experts voted Gretzky number one. Gretzky said he would have voted Bobby Orr or Gordie Howe as the best of all time.
The 1998–99 season was his last as a professional player. He reached one milestone in this last season, breaking the professional total (regular season and playoffs) goal-scoring record of 1,071, which Gordie Howe had held. Gretzky was having difficulty scoring this season and finished with only nine goals, contributing to this being the only season in which he failed to average at least a point per game, but his last goal brought his scoring total for his combined NHL / WHA career to 1,072, one more than Howe. As the season wound down, there was media speculation that Gretzky would retire, but he refused to announce his retirement. His last NHL game in Canada was on April 15, 1999, a 2–2 tie with the Ottawa Senators and the Rangers' second-to-last game of the season. Following the contest, in a departure from the usual three stars announcement, Gretzky was awarded all three stars. Upon returning to New York, Gretzky announced he would retire after the Rangers' last game of the season.
The final game of Gretzky's career was a 2–1 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 18, 1999, in Madison Square Garden. Although the game involved two American teams, both national anthems were played, with the lyrics slightly adjusted to accommodate Gretzky's departure. In place of the lyrics "O Canada, we stand on guard for thee", Bryan Adams ad-libbed, "We're going to miss you, Wayne Gretzky". "The Star-Spangled Banner", as sung by John Amirante, was altered to include the words "in the land of Wayne Gretzky". Gretzky ended his career with a final point, assisting on the lone New York goal scored by Brian Leetch. At the time of his retirement, Gretzky was the second-to-last WHA player still active in professional hockey. Mark Messier, who attended the game along with other representatives of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty, was the last.

A lazy Sunday afternoon, a gentleman chilling on the bench. I was taken by the strong silhouette of Wayne's statue. Raised the camera about 5 ft over my head to blindly get this perspective. Seems to be an odd juxtaposition now; immortalized celebration meets 'meh'

I met Wayne in person twice. Not formally. It was a long time ago, pre-internet when I was a different Jeff. With a mullet.
I wrote a little thing about it
It's short.

Perhaps the most famous coaching advice in all of hockey came from Walter Gretzky. He told his son not to focus on where the puck is, but where the puck is going. That's good advice for life too. The puck is going to our kids. Our future. Hockey is our game. It promotes fitness and personal development. That's why the Wayne Gretzky Foundation is focused on putting hockey and well being within every kid's reach. It's not just about equipping kids for hockey. It's about equipping kids for life. You're guaranteed to miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take. Every kid deserves a shot. Let's put every kid in the game.

Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Gretzky honed his skills on a backyard rink and regularly played minor ice hockey at a level far above his peers. Despite his unimpressive size and strength, Gretzky's intelligence, stamina, and reading of the game were unrivaled. He was adept at dodging checks from opposing players, consistently anticipated where the puck was going to be, and executed the right move at the right time. Gretzky became known for setting up behind his opponent's net, an area that was nicknamed "Gretzky's office".
Gretzky was the top scorer in the 1978 World Junior Championships, then signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association, where he briefly played before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers. After the NHL-WHA merger, he set many scoring records in ten seasons with the Oilers, and led them to four Stanley Cup championships. Traded to the Los Angeles Kings where he played eight seasons, he led them to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, and he is credited with popularizing hockey in California. He played briefly for the St. Louis Blues before finishing his career with the New York Rangers. He won nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player, 10 Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season, two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP and five Lester B. Pearson Awards as the most outstanding player as judged by his peers. He led the league in goal-scoring five times and assists 16 times. He also won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and performance five times and often spoke against fighting in hockey.
After his retirement in 1999, Gretzky was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, making him the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. The NHL retired his jersey number 99 league-wide. Gretzky was one of six players voted to the International Ice Hockey Federation's Centennial All-Star Team. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2000, and received the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2012. Gretzky became executive director for the Canadian national men's hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics, in which the team won a gold medal. In 2000, he became part-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and following the 2004–05 NHL lock-out, he became the team's head coach. In 2004, Gretzky was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. In September 2009, following the Phoenix Coyotes' bankruptcy, Gretzky resigned as head coach and relinquished his ownership share. In October 2016, he returned to the Oilers as a minority partner and vice-chairman of their parent company, Oilers Entertainment Group. He left in 2021 to become an analyst on Turner Sports' NHL coverage.

The troopers wanted to send a very Happy 50th Birthday to Wayne Gretzky. Being a Canadian, hockey has obviously been a large part of my life; from playing competitively as a boy, watching the World Juniors, playing in various Men's leagues and watching the NHL on a nightly basis.
Gretzky is arguably the best player to have ever played the game. For proof check out the link.

Nelson Tower, a 46-storey, 560 foot, art-deco design by H. Craig Severance was completed in 1931 as the tallest building in the Garment District. The tower has a rectangle base of white stone, from which the simple triple setbacks of mid-facade rise, with white stonework emphasizing each setback. Each section of the facade has spandrels of mid-tone brown stone--as opposed to the light brown limestone of the vertical striping. The crown is completely white stone and has a slight slope.
The billboard in the front is a Public Service Announcement from the Foundation for a Better Life, a privately-funded nonprofit organization started in 2000. The mission of The Foundation through various media efforts, is to "encourage adherence to a set of quality values through personal accountability and by raising the level of expectations of performance of all individuals regardless of religion or race."
This billboard features Wayne Gretzky, appropriately enough one block north of Madison Square Garden, as a New York Ranger on the night of his retirement with the slogan "Class & Grace." Gretzky, nicknamed "The Great One," is widely considered the greatest hockey player of all time. Identified as a hockey prodigy at a young age, he set 40-regular-season records, 15 playoff records, 6 All-Star records, won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, and won 9 MVP awards and 10 scoring titles. He is the only player ever to total over 200 points in a season (a feat that he accomplished four times in his career) and have his number (99) officially retired across the entire NHL. He made his name with the Edmonton Oilers from 1979-1988 where he won 5 Stanley Cup Championships. He spent 1988-1996 in Los Angeles helping popularize a northern sport in California, and ended his professional career in 1999 after a few years playing Broadway.
