My grandparents always enjoyed getting away into the mountains. Mom has so many fond memories of family outings up into the high country... drives, hikes, and picnics.
This is a photo from one of those perfect summer days... her sister poses by the sign for the South River Picnic Grounds.
My absolute favorite part is my grandfather watching them from the car in the background.. waiting patiently.

You know.... when I first started putting together the Wayback Machine, I told myself that I would stay away from posting photographs of myself as a little kid.
Oh, well.. so much for that. I have already gone back on it many times anyway.
I really like this photograph.
My mom used to dance in a troupe and she gave dance classes as well. I don't remember what she told me about this photo, in terms of what it was, but there is a date of 1948 shown, so at least I have the year right.

These two were taken by my uncle, one of the coolest photographers I know. These crappy scans don't do them justice.
Anyhoo, lemme tell ya a little bit about this dog. This is Simon, my grandparents' fifth child. Nearly every childhood memory I have of my grandpa includes Simon. He got his own scoop of ice cream every night. He loved toothpaste. He knew every one of us by name. He was at my aunt's wedding.
He was one of those rare beasties, ya know? I thought he deserved his own Way Back Wednesday.

Wayback Machine - Christmas Eve, 1962
As has been tradition since well before I was born, my mom's family always gets together on Christmas Eve for dinner. We still do.
These times were something I looked forward to all year... even as a child, I would have traded Christmas morning for another night together with the family.
From playing with Dave and getting into trouble when we were kids, to going out into the workshop and having coffee and talking by the wood stove just a couple of years before he died... my memories of Christmas Eves spent with him are something that I cherish.
There were so many times that our moms had to yell at us.. "If you two boys don't straighten up, Santa Claus won't be coming!" He always did, though.
The years passed and we grew older... and Santa was no longer on our minds. But I still looked forward to Christmas Eve every year... the time when the we come together to celebrate the season with each other.
I love this photo for many reasons. Not the least of which is the fact that my dad is wearing his Gulf shirt.. and a huge smile. I love that I can look at Dave's dad here, and see in him the cousin that I grew up with. I love that I somehow can get a sense of who my grandpa was through this photo... and that my grandma was preoccupied with my mom, who was preoccupied with her niece.
This photo was taken by Dave's mom in 1962, three years before Dave was born, and eight years before I came along. Five years after this image was made, my Grandfather Justus passed away. And twenty-two years after that, the little girl in this photo would have a son of her own... who I am still hanging out with at the kid's table again this year.
Way Back Machine
Last week, I posted this photo of some dudes driving on U.S. Highway 70 while it was still under construction.
This photo was taken behind my mom's old house. My mom is the one behind the sign, and the other two girls are her cousins. This is also at the site of the new highway while it was being built.

He will be a side character supporting, and indeed he has a sister among Brader sister of Adrila of Matthew sister coming soon and cousin niece female one too (coming soon of the both) -

Dad took this one of mom on their boat during a summer trip to the lake.
I love the determined look on her face here... it says a lot about her.
Mom is back home now again, and is recovering.
I want to thank all of you for your concern and your kindness over this past week.

My entire childhood is filled with memories of my Grandma Justus as the sweet and kindhearted woman that she was with all of her grandchildren.
But make no mistake... she was "Depression-Era" tough, through and through.
Here she is with my mom in 1933, outside of my Grandpa's garage.
Way Back Machine
My parents share a dance at a party in their home. I will always be impressed by the fact that my father built this house. Mom is impressed by the fact that in those days, they brought in the lawn chairs for the guests to sit in because they did not have much furniture.
Way Back Machine - 1949
My mom is in the ICU after suffering a heart attack earlier today. She had two stents placed in an artery, and is recovering this evening. This had been building for the past few days... but mom, true to her character, kept insisting that she was fine. Was she ever surprised to find out that she actually wasn't...
I was over at my mom's on Sunday looking for some treasures in her photos and I came across this one.
Mom said that her brother had just come back from the air force and they went for a bike ride together. She borrowed his bow and arrow.
She said that her brother heard a guy whistle at her and was very surprised because she was his little sister.
So neat to hear these memories my mom has.
