it's been overcast and foggy here in the central valley and we haven't seen the sun for a few days .... and, early yesterday morning a line on the water heater sprung a leak ... i noticed something was a little wrong when i got up and walked into my den and the carpeting was soaked! ... so, this weekend has been spent moving furniture out of the den and pulling up carpeting and pads, and drying out the room ... not a fun weekend .... grrrr

i'd have rather been floating and flying into the light ... hope you all had a better weekend than i did!

If you can't shoot it, what good is it?

The cook could use either wood or coal to power this stove. The vintage water heater is a beauty too. Glad times have changed.

Lots of texture contributed by birds currently occupying this abandoned farmhouse.

Happy Texture Tuesday!

Who remembers Ascot water heaters? - a childhood memory of dripping taps, slight trepidation and the "pop" as the gas caught and the water became to rumble! I always stood just a bit back from the Ascots I knew!

This very thoughtfully produced and laid-out brochure cover dates from about 1950.

TAKURE in tagalog (English: Kettle ) is a small cooking equipment used in the boiling water in preparation to making tea or other drinks that require hot water. Depending on cultural or historical origin, the word Kettle has a different meaning.

Although missing a few details, like number boards, headlight, and sanding pipes, this nearly 100 year old live steamer looks amazing with all its details.

Trivia and Jane replace a thermostat on a hot water heater.

Of course, as it turns out, the problem is not with the thermostat, but with the actual electrical breaker switch in the main electrical box.

None of the Troubleshooting Guides I looked at suggested Main Breaker Panel Failure as a likely culprit in a water heater not working.

The question now is: is the issue with the breaker itself, which looks worn and water damaged, or with the entire electrical panel, which looks worn and water damaged?

Just ran across this old snapshot from a house project. 22 years ago this instantaneous Ruud water heater (circa 1905) still worked--in spite of how it looks. We needed to have the foundation replaced in our 1899 Victorian home (which was then brick-and-mortar) and the entire floor had to be jack-hammered. Thus, the water heater could no longer sit on the floor.

The foundation contractor trussed the water heater up so that it would still function and we were able to continue living in the house through the foundation work.

I listened to the wind

blowing over the empty hills

shredded Chantilly lace curtains

murmuring

in the dry eye sockets

of long broken windows

and I could swear

for just a lonesome moment

that the faint strains

of Motif Johnson

playing "Hot Water Blues"

on slide guitar

filled these hollow rooms

from the tarnished horn of a Victrola

shifting my weight

to get a better listen

the sound of crunching plaster

under my heel

broke the spell

all those phantoms fled

through the creak of a torn screen door

slapping in a breeze

at the front of the house

it was only me again

alone with my thoughts

We were looking at an open house of a beautiful old place and this was in the basement! You don't see stone basement walls like this anymore either.

This one is for Jeff Anderson, a follow up to a previous photo: flic.kr/p/2orNgAf

It took me over a year to locate this photo, it turned up recently in some old slides I've been copying. From my first deluxe apartment 1976 maybe?

On another note, can any of you old music buffs identify the poster on the wall? It looks like it could be some album art but I can't place it.

One-armed spiral galaxy NGC 4725. The interacting galaxy with a tidal tail(?) is NGC4747. Meade SN10+Atik460ex+Baader LRGB filters. Tuttle Creek CG in Lone Pine CA. Exposure data will be specified later.

Atik460ex is a great camera, but unfortunately the chip size is a bit too small for this group of galaxies when used with SN10 (the "Waterheater"). I could barely fit the four major galaxies in a single frame.
