Pakistani marriage is usually a very colorful and costly event. It takes several days to conclude nuptials completely. While Nikah and Walima are the only Islamic Sharia requirements; mehndi, mayon, barat along with many other cultural traditions are practiced widely. One of the many ill practices followed, dowry takes its toll the most. More often than not, it is an unimaginable burden borne by the women’s side. A social awareness against this hideous ‘crime’ is getting its roots which seems to be a positive change.

Well, those aren't the colours of Mali. Why does it look more like the flag of Bolivia or Senegal?
Me: I didn't like the green colour of the modelling clay. That's why I kneaded it together with other colours of modelling clay to make a darker green.
Reporter/journalist:
What does that have to do with those strange bags?
Me: Mali has a high birth rate, doesn't it? There are people who don't want to or are not allowed to use such bags. So in terms of the former German law, it would have been possible to make a mouth and nose cover from such bags.
Reporter/journalist:
But do you have to use modelling clay for that?
That is never, ever environmentally friendly!
Me: In my opinion, these bags only look better when they are filled with modelling clay, fresh and untouched.
Reporter/journalist:
But do you really want everyone to wear something like that, especially now?
Me: This mouth and nose covering is obviously not for people with a latex allergy. And it's absolutely not suitable for children anyway!

Na, das sind aber nicht die Farben von Mali. Wieso sieht das mehr nach der Flagge von Bolivien oder Senegals aus?
Ich: Die Grüne Farbe der Knete hat mir nicht gefallen. Deswegen habe ich sie mit anderen Farben der Knete zu einem dunklerem grün neu zusammen geknetet.

Was hat das eigentlich mit diesen merkwürdigen Tüten da zu tun?
Ich: Mali hat doch eine Hohe Geburtenzahl? Es gibt eben Menschen die keine solche Tüten verwenden möchten oder dürfen. Also im Sinne des ehemaligen deutschen Gesetztes, wäre es somit auch möglich gewesen, aus solchen Tüten, eine Mund und Nasenabdeckung zu fertigen.

Aber muss man den dafür auch noch unbedingt Knete mit verwenden?
Das ist nie und nimmer Umweltfreundlich!
Ich: Ich bin der Ansicht, dass diese Tüten nur Frisch wie unberührt, mit Knete gefüllt besser aussehen.

Aber wollen Sie tatsächlich, das vor allem jetzt noch, alle Menschen so etwas tragen sollten?
Ich: Diese Mund und Nasenbedeckung ist natürlich nichts für Leute mit einer Latex-Allergie. Und für Kinder ja ohnehin absolut nicht geeignet!

Don't! They have such colourful and traditionally patterned wedding dresses in the Sub-Coninent. This is detail from a Pakistani bride's wedding outfit. Hand woven traditional patterns on silk. This is a colour for the "second day", the Walima or party thrown by the groom's family. I'm told this can be almost any colour these days. The colour normally reserved for the "first day", the Bharat or actual wedding reception by the bride's side is traditionally red or shades of it. Different cultures employ different colours for different occasions. In the West you get the colour white for weddings. Not so in countries such as Pakistan or India. White is associated with funerals and widowhood! Weddings are very colourful affairs. And special moments of joy and happiness. And spicy food aplenty :-)

From Swapnil and Farha's walima shoot at 'The Lodhi's Delhi'. We weren't exactly prepared for a ring shot that day since we were not aware that rings will be exchanged during walima. By that I mean, we didn't have our macro lens in the kit. 35mm came to rescue. Next job was to create some beautiful light for creating a surreal image. Few lights, few adjustments, few test shots and bingo! Exactly what we were thinking off. :)
