Ox rolled with me to pick Wage up from work today, Wage wanted to show him around the Super Mart. "And this is where we keep the boxes..." Of course, they then headed over to the snacks... One track minds. Totally.
It was time for Wage's checkup, and, being that he's so helpful, he wanted to make things easy on the doctor.

Minimum Wage Dunny: "Uhm, David... Are you just going to take pictures and let this happen?"
Me: "Yep." :)
Ever since Danboard came on the scene, it was obvious that Wage was the one to follow. We all know that Wage loves boxes, so it's just a natural fit. A match made in heaven.
Explored.

Took some time this morning to visit the local cemetery. I normally photograph the Memorial Day observance here in the village. But the event was cancelled this year on account of the pandemic. Social distancing and the advanced age of many of the attending veterans made the ceremony too risky. Understandable but nothing to prevent me from coming here to visit this very familiar place. I brought the camera but more out of habit than anything else. Was not feeling any great sense of direction or purpose photographically. Never stopped me before though and the universe always seems to reward my efforts. I wandered about for a while, and met with a few veterans along the way. They shared their stories and allowed me to shoot portraits. As I was making my way out I passed by the area where the speakers normally assemble beneath the cemetery flagpole. There I came across a small wagon containing boxes of American flags along with charts of the cemetery and lists of veterans. Apparently the wagon had been left here by whoever was assigned to place flags on the veterans graves. One of the boxes contained the cast metal medallions that indicate which war a particular veteran fought in. It was a poignant moment seeing the medallions just laying there in a cardboard box. I imagined all of the wars and all of the lives sacrificed. A roll call of deceased veterans is always read around during the annual observance. But seeing these medallions really brought home the human toll in a way I had not expected. There was seemingly no order; they were placed causally, almost haphazardly. And they represented only a small portion of the wars fought, and still being fought. I knew in an instant that someone screwed up royally leaving these boxes here. So undignified and inappropriate, not to mention at risk of theft. I contacted the local police and the chief quickly arrived in person to recover the medallions and other items.

Salaryman's lunch hour walk. Wanchai was a peaceful war-zone as always.
I was driving on a road through the fields between Hwy 101 and Monterey when I saw this scene. I had to wonder how many Americans would be willing to work all day, bent over, doing an honest day's work for a mere wage, then show up again the next morning to do it all over again, and again, and again........ Something to ponder as we eat our vegetables.
