Anemone x hybrida 'Party Dress' WW37 Anemone Y0- (Fredrika Bronsther,Hewlett, N.Y 1997) Japanese Anemone Windflower, Mature plant size: 36in., pink double, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW39, In Garden Bed Y0 for 12.3 YEARS (Lone). Planted in 2010.
smgrowers.com: Anemone x hybrida 'Party Dress' PP13,844 (Pink Japanese Anemone) - Perennial plant with glossy green foliage to 20 inches tall. In late summer through fall, rising on stems to 36-38 inches tall are big, fluffy double pink flowers to 3 1/2 inches in diameter - nearly twice the size of most Japanese Anemones. This prolific bloomer may require staking like most tall Japanese Anemones. Plant in full sun to partial shade and water regularly. Hardy to USDA Hardiness Zones 5 (0° F). Great in the back of informal flower beds with other tall plants. Discovered by the Inventor as a chance seedling from a random cross-pollination of two unnamed selections of Anemone x hybrida, not patented. This Anemone was selected by Fredrika Bronsther in 1997 of Hewlett, N.Y for its large pink flowers.
2020 notes: Somewhat top heavy. Rain will bring the blooms to the ground. Even without rain the blooms tend to splay. The supporting infrastructure is not able to uphold the facade. It spreads, but not as much as my other anemones. The flowers are quite attractive. Anemones are probaley meant to be single.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blaumeise' 9/2021 Bigleaf- (1979) Teller's Blue Bigleaf Hydrangea, Mature size: 4-6’, lacecap, rose red or deep blue, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month 6, In Garden Bed D1,#01 for 3.1 YEARS (MBulb). Planted in 2018.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blaumeise' is commonly sold under many different names: Tellers Blue, Blue Tit, Blue Titmouse, & Blue Sky. 'Blaumeise' is part of the Teller Series (Switzerland breeding program that started in 1952) of 26 hybrid lacecap (teller means plate in German) hydrangeas that were named after European birds. Note that Blaumeise translates to blue titmouse. Probably the most hardy of the Tellers, but it needs protection from late frosts. It's a tall (4-6') plant with strong stems. And, it's blue or pink depending on the soil pH and aluminum content.
2020 note: no blooms after 2 years. This plant may bloom only on old wood. It was protected all winter with plastic wrap cylinder.

The Citiline® series is a Proven Winners© collection of dwarf hydrangeas from Europe (Venice, Mars, Berlin, Paris, Vienna and Rio). Hydrangea macrophylla 'Venice Raven' (PP10928, 1999) is a compact plant with mophead flowers that range from deep blue to hot pink depending on soil pH. Flowers mature to green. Mildew resistant. Supposedly does not require pruning. Although it is rated to zone 5, winter protection may be prudent.
2020 note: 15 of the plants in this garden have drip irrigation. I waited until mid summer to turn it on this year. I think I will enable much earlier next year. Also, this garden is mostly shaded. I was thinking shaded and moist for big leaf hydrangeas. There are several in this garden. I do not remember if I protected this plant last winter.

Liquidamber styracifula 9/2021 Sweet Gum- (Sweet Gum) Sweet Gum, Mature size: 60', -, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed D1 for 24.4 YEARS (-). Planted in 1997.
Missouri Botanical Garden: Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly called sweet gum, is a low-maintenance deciduous shade tree that is native from Connecticut to Florida and Missouri further south to Texas, Mexico and Central America. In Missouri, it typically occurs in moist low woods and along streams only in the far southeastern corner of the state (Steyermark). It typically grows to 60-80’ (less frequently to 120’) tall with a straight trunk. Habit is pyramidal in youth, but it gradually develops an oval-rounded crown as it matures. Glossy, long-stalked, deep green leaves (4-7” across) have toothed margins. Each leaf has 5-7 pointed, star-shaped lobes. Leaves are fragrant when bruised. Fall color at its best is a brilliant mixture of yellows, oranges, purples and reds. Branchlets may have distinctive corky ridges. Non-showy, monoecious, yellow-green flowers appear in spherical clusters in April-May. Female flowers give way to the infamous gum balls which are hard, spherical, bristly fruiting clusters to 1.5” diameter. Gum balls mature to dark brown and usually remain on the tree through the winter, but can create clean-up problems during the general period of December through April as the clusters fall to the ground. In pedestrian areas, fruiting clusters must be cleaned up because they not only create unsightly litter, but also create human safety problems (e.g., turning an ankle by inadvertently stepping on a cluster). Tree wood has been widely used for a number of applications including flooring, furniture and home interiors. The gum obtained from genus plants has been used in the past for a variety of purposes, including chewing gum, incense, perfumes, folk medicines and flavorings.

Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' 9/2021 Smooth- (McDaniels, Univ of Illinois, 1910) Smooth Hydrangea or wild hydrangea, Mature size: 4x4’, Tiny white fertile flowers corymbs 2-6" across, USDA Hardiness Zone 3-9, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW24, In Garden Bed D1 for 3.1 YEARS (Lowes). Planted in 2018.
'Annabelle' is a nature cultivar that was discovered ~1910 in the wild near Anna, (Southern) Illinois. Plantsman J.C.McDaniels from the University of Illinois named it and promoted it for its extremely large flowers (corymbs) which are considerably larger than the species. It is probably the most grown cultivar of smooth hydrangea. It blooms on new wood, so it is quite hardy. It can be cut to the ground in late winter to promote plant vigor.
National Gardenig Association, member luis_pr: These grew like weeds in my old Atlanta, Georgia stomping grounds. I would add to the description: can wilt a lot when hot so keep it well mulched. And add some wire around it to help support the heavy stems when the blooms get wet. I had to put mine in a full but very bright shady spot so they get limited watering from rains. Will propagate via suckers too so plantings tend to get "wider" as the years pass.

Crownsville Nursery: Hosta ’First Dance’ PPAF is a sport of H. ’Dancing Queen’ introduced by Walters Gardens. Large gold ruffled leaves with a bold green edge.. Gold turning to chartreuse by mid-late summer. 24"h x 48"w. Pale lavender flowers. (3.5" pots)
WalterGardens: This sport of 'Dancing Queen' has a wide yellow center and green margins. Rippled leaf margins, varying from ¼ to ½" wide, jet into the leaf center, giving the plant a graceful appearance. This hosta forms an upright mound-shape clump. The intense yellow centers mellow to chartreuse by midsummer. Pale lavender flowers appear above the foliage mid to late summer on arching flower scapes. A great specimen plant for the shade garden.
2020 note: well developed plant, pot bound. Seperated and trimmed root system. Planted in shade bed with drip irrigation.

Swan Island: Bluetiful 6” Blue lavender, some would say periwinkle; blooms are ruffled and fancy-free. This is a very compact and study plant of 3 ½’. Great cut flower and a real eye catcher! As close to blue as you can get with a dahlia. This is a dahlia that all of us here at Swan Island Dahlias grow in our yards - A " Gitts" family favorite! Average sized tubers. Plants in V2 did not do all that well.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Cityline Venice' 'Venice Raven' 9/2021 Bigleaf- (Rampp, 1999) Compact Bigleaf Hydrangea, Mature size: 3x3’, Blue or pink, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month 6, In Garden Bed D1 for 3.1 YEARS (Hirt's). Planted in 2018.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Forever Pink' 9/2021 Bigleaf- (1951) Compact Bigleaf Hydrangea, Mature size: 3x3’, Colorfast Mophead, USDA Hardiness Zone 6, Michigan Bloom Month 6, In Garden Bed D1 for 3.1 YEARS (MBulb). Planted in 2018.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Draps Wonder' is marketed in the US as 'Forever Pink'. The name implies that it is somewhat colorfast (and pink). Of course, if you add aluminum sulfate to the soil, you will have to change the name to 'forever blue'. It has broad rounded, sharply toothed dark green leaves with pale green undersides. Leaves turn yellow in fall. Michael Dirr reported that it was sensitive to cold weather (it was part of his cold weather trials at the University of Georgia). The Belgian nursery Draps Dom introduced 'Draps Wonder' in 1951.
2020 note: No signs of a bloom after 2 years in the soil. Probably blooms on ild wood only. Protected with a plastic wrapped wire cylinder.
