Missouri Botanical Garden: Lycoris squamigera is a late summer-blooming bulb of the Amaryllis family. Strap-like grayish-green leaves (to 12” long and 1” wide) in spring. Leaves die back in summer. Thick naked flower scapes rise to 2’ tall in late summer, each bearing 4-7 funnel-shaped, rose-pink tinged with lilac flowers that are quite fragrant. Appearance resembles Belladonna lily (Amaryllis belladonna). Flowering habit somewhat reminiscent of Colchicum.

Commonly called resurrection flower, surprise lily or magic lily because the leaves disappear in summer with the flower spikes seemingly rising from the dead in late summer. flowers are quite fragrant.

Anemone x hybrida 'Serenade' WW34 Anemone Y0- (Windflower) Japanese Anemone Windflower, Mature plant size: 24in., PINK, Pink single, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW33, In Garden Bed Y0 for 14.2 YEARS (9.95). Planted in 2008.

Max Vogel' and 'Serenade' have similar pink flowers with 10 to 15 narrow, overlapping tepals surrounding a yellow, globe-like center of anthers. Bloom periods average ~60 days. Strong stalks, no flopping. After a few years, they reach 4 foot tall.

2020 notes: 4-5 feet tall. Spreads rather aggressively. I have this planted in a somewhat shady area, so maybe this accounts for its height. A late summer bloomer. Chicago Botanic Garden did an evaluation of Anemones in 2004. The top 3 in their trials were ‘Andrea Atkinson’, ‘Max Vogel’ and ‘Serenade’. I have all three.

Rudbeckia subtomentosa 'Henry Eilers' 8/2021 Coneflower- (Henry Eilers, IL) Sweet Coneflower or sweet black-eyed Susan, Mature size: 5x4’, Yellow quilled, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW32, In Garden Bed P2,3a for 13.2 YEARS (7.95). Planted in 2008.

Missouri Botanical Garden: ‘Henry Eilers’ typically grows to 3-5’ tall on stiff, upright, leafy stems. It was found growing in the wild in a railroad prairie remnant in Montgomery County, Illinois. In general appearance, the flowers are very similar to those of the species, except the yellow rays are rolled instead of flat, giving the flower a quilled effect. Dome-shaped brown center disks. Flowers bloom in clusters atop strong, sometimes-branching stems from July to September. Dark gray-green leaves (3-6” long) in basal clumps (some 3-lobed) with smaller unlobed stem leaves. Leaves have a mild sweet aroma. The cultivar was discovered by Henry Eilers, a well-known nurseryman in southern Illinois, and was introduced by Larry Lowman of Ridgecrest Nursery and Gardens in Wynne, Arkansas in 2003.

Rudbeckia subtomentosa that was discovered in Illinois. Just like the species but the individual flower petals are rolled (quilled). Found in southern Illinois by Henry Eilers, a horticulturist and retired nurseryman. A large perennial. Needs support. Lasts a long time as a cut flower.

Victory Seed: This wildflower is native to Mexico and Central America. The plants are erect, can reach six feet in height, has leafy stems with leaves that are large and triangular shaped. They have bright orange flowers that are four inches wide with multiple flower heads per stem. Attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Prefers well-drained soils in a sunny location. Heat and drought tolerant. Makes a great cut flower and terrific at the back of beds and borders. Thin to 18"

Each packet contains 0.5 gram, which is approximately 45 seeds. 2022note: the one in G2 snapped off, probably due to wind. Seems somewhat brittle. Started seed indoors, 3 seeds per 4" pot. Rather than thin, I planted 3 plants together. Worked really well, tall and very full.

Family Asteraceae (ass-ter-AY-see-ee). University of Minnesota, 1982. Rose-lavender with gold center, 4in. quill/spoon. Tall upright. Looks good in 2017, 2018. One of my stronger growing mums.

2020 notes: This mum is in its forth year and is still going strong. Most of my other mums did not make it through the first or second winter. Soil in this garden is mostly clay and sometimes wet. There were another 11 mums that were planted in this garden and all have croaked.

Digging Dog Nursery: Its compact habit and fine textured foliage make this one of the most popular Pennisetum cultivars. The foliar mound is very upright and dome-shaped, hosting blades that are darker than most Pennisetum alopecuroides. Appearing earlier than others in the species, a slew of plump woolly, slightly curved, creamy green flower heads, arching at least a foot aloft, are borne on wiry slender stems. To heighten your garden drama, let ‘Hameln’ anchor a riot of Asters and Nepetas.

Blooms late July–October
