Weltkriegsbunker an der Promenade in Münster

Winchester & Western's 86 crew arrives at Vardo Yard in Hagerstown with a lengthy train for interchange with NS. Predictably, much of this consist is of sand and related commodities. The lead unit was originally an Illinois Central GP40.

Our mission was to move the medics back out of the fight zone. Seemed easy enough, but we had no idea the fighting had already reach the area. Nothing but rubble remained where buildings once stood. Bodies laying everywhere on the streets and among what was left of the makeshift hospital.

Most of our team didn't make it. A female nurse was all that was left of the medical team we were sent to evacuate by the time we arrived. Private Johnson was hit with shrapnel from a bomb going off and the nurse was desperately trying to keep him among the living.

The few of us that remained took what little shelter we could find in a build barely left standing. Rogers would periodically toss hand grenades out to try and hold back the enemy. We were running low on ammunition so we had to make every round count.

Bombs kept going off through the night and stray bullets whizzed through the air like rain from hell itself. One barely nicking my left ear before I dove behind the truck we had planned on using to may our way out but it was hit and no longer usable. There was so much smoke and dirt in the air you could taste it.

The captain had finally succumbed to his wounds during the night and morale was low. We knew every minute might be our last.

I don't know how we made it through the night. By morning, we were barely holding on and had little hope of being rescued. Radio was out and our supplies consisted of mostly medical bandages and a few cans of beans.

It wasn't looking good for us, when in the distance we heard the engines of a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk come into earshot. God was with us that day. A few hours later ground support arrived. I couldn't help the tears that streamed down my face through the blood and the dirt when a wave of relief washed over me.

We were saved against all odds and I knew I would have a chance to see another day. So many of my brothers in arms would never get that chance, but I will never let their sacrifice be in vain. I will carry them in my heart until we meet again in the afterlife.
