The USS Inaugural (AM-242), or "Augie" as she is called by her former crew, was an Admirable Class minesweeper commissioned on 30 December 1944. The vessel was designated as a National Historic Landmark on 14 January 1986. Tragically, during the Great Flood of 1993, she broke loose from her moorings along the Mississippi River in Downtown Saint Louis, Missouri USA and subsequently sunk approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south. To this day, she is lying on her port side as shown.
Because of a severe drought during the summer of 2012, Augie once again became fully visible. Since this photograph, the Mighty Mississippi has once again risen to normal levels, reclaiming all but the top few feet of her hull.
