This was intended to be part of the Stand Up for Peace Challenge last week but it took me a bit to figure out :D It's about the best homage I could to the Indian Holi Festival. For those that don't know and in short it's basically a festival to celebrate love. After I thought about the challenge a bit, I got to thinking: standin up for peace is awesome, but even better if you just applied this to all aspects of your life. Stop hating on others and stop hating on yourself. If everyone took a grip more time putting others before their own insecurities, then maybe there would be no need to stand up for peace. Maybe we would already have achieved it.

" Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?

Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way through night and day

‘Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees

Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please

Beyond the door, there's peace, I'm sure

And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven "

For some that phrase would describe their eyes after a late night of partying and ringing in the New Year. For me on this first morning of the 20s, it meant first-light reaching Towers of the Virgin in Zion National Park.

Being a native East-Coaster, who has transplanted to life on the West Coast, I still feel that the New Year occurs when the crystal ball drops in New York, and that's the end. So, with the aide of staid Springdale, Utah, it was easy to get an early bedtime on New Years Eve so we could begin the trek to the Canyon Overlook Trail at 6:00 AM to catch first-light and sunrise from this vantage.

The trail is a relatively flat mile hike with a few tricky spots where the ice and slickrock conspire to give even the most sure-footed concern in the dark. Once we reached the overlook, I was a little concerned that our cold trek may have been for naught, due to the heavy cloud cover. Though they were thick overhead, there still was some clearing to the East, along the sun on the horizon to light a narrow band, reflecting off the cloud bottoms and warming the sheer rocks faces of the Temple of the Virgin ahead. This image was captured about 10-15 minutes before the local sunrise time, and is considerably brighter than what we saw with our eyes, due to the 20-second exposure.

Once the actual sun rays reached the Temple directly, the light only lit the areas seen here in red for less than 5 minutes before disappearing above the clouds for the remainder of the day.

Australian singer-songwriter Jon Stevens recorded and released a cover of the Temptations song "I Wish It Would Rain" in 1994. The money raised was used to benefit farmers affected by the drought. According to Wikipedia, the song peaked at number 49 in New Zealand. I thought, what was better not to include this song... I think it is a great initiative, that of Jon Stevens, worthy of praise. And it is written here, for the record... I'm sure Jon puts all the best of 'him... but I will not include his version here... I hope Jon Stevens forgives me...

This would look good with some snow on it, but temps way below 0 degrees. Think I'll stay in town.

Would it be better if I rotate it 180 degrees (This is how I took the photo)?? I looked at it again and again but was not sure, which version is better!

When I took that picture the church was under renovation and only the upper part (what we see here) was visible!!

You would think that with that long sharp bill, capable of splitting mussels with ease, that they would use their bills as weapons. However, they fight with their feet and not with that otherwise lethal beak. Limpkin skirmishes are almost always very brief and are more for show that actual combat. I have seen contact but, like in most cases, this one was all for show. I’d say it was over in one or two seconds. It’s difficult to say what they were fighting over, as there were many limpkins are food was in abundance. Possibly just guys getting on each other’s nerves.
