Black Kite (Milvus migrans)
Di and I went for a short walk this morning. The Black Kites were hunting the Highway Paddock.
Well it isn't quite 30 Thursday but what the heck, I'm still awake after a 17 hour day so here goes. SOO 710 and 2401 start out of the Rapids toward Port Edward with 54 cars on August 26, 1978. 710 was pretty tough looking with the peeling nose paint but ended up getting a repaint a couple years later.

Framed with two concrete whistleposts from the NF&G days, Rainelle Shifter R202 arrives in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia with their first cut of loads. They’ll tie them down on the main and return to Bellwood for the second cut. The Hawley Creek Industrial track used to branch off just west of here.
An Alaska Railroad crew is working Whittier yard with a pair of SD70MACs getting ready to double up a big 120N freight of mixed manifest and intermodal traffic off the AML barge up from Seattle that they will take north to Anchorage a little later.
Whittier is the ARRC's main port for interchange of both containers and railcars which arrive via the weekly AML barge from Seattle. The containers are stacked on racks two or three high above the main barge deck which contains 8 tracks for interchange of railcars to and from the BNSF & UP. The concrete structure rising beyond is the long abandoned Buckner Building, once the largest building in Alaska. And the single track at left and the tent structure beside it is the ARR's passenger 'station' which mostly serves passengers walking directly across the street to and from waiting cruise ships.

Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides)
He was working the Research Farm Paddock early this morning looking for a meal for her while she is in the nest.
I’ve always had admiration for the working dogs. Border Collies and Aussies are great herders, Labs make great seeing eye dogs. German Shepherds are awesome guard dogs, and who doesn’t love those St. Bernard’s with those casks of brandy. I decided to put our dog Kenzie to work. I offered her a choice of professions and she seemed drawn to waiting tables. The only problem is the only waiting she does, is waiting to be fed. I raised a beggar instead of a waiter. I guess she'll never get one of those green service dog vests. Sigh....

This porter will not carry this heavy load up the 1400 meters. He will do a lot more. The porters take it in turns to cover sections from sunrise to sunset. The loads are sometimes around 50 kg.
Their body adapts incredibly well, developing a very specific musculature for their work.

RLHH 2111 is on the point of SOR 597 as they switch Nicholson and Cates lumber.
The cars on the left were storage cars being paid to sit there by Procor. The cars in the background is actually 597's train.
After assembling a nice-sized train, they had to pull their train, in cuts, through the elevator track at Sibley IL to close roof doors. I'm not entirely sure why this was done later in the trip but it became their activity of choice for pretty much the rest of the afternoon. The place is always worth a visit, especially when 1 Larry's truck engine is back at the shop for traction motor work and the other is west, stuck behind this guy.
IC 6256, BLE 906, and CN 2029 are in charge of dumping a loaded Taconite train at the docks in Duluth, MN on an overcast day.
CP 4404 proudly wears it's mid-1990's paint as it sits in the lead position of CP H11, seen here working the wax factory outside Toronto Yard. I imagine when the engine was originally painted it may have been viewed as a downgrade due to it's SOO heritage, but now it undoubtedly holds quite a lot of value amongst railfans as it is the only active GP38 on the CP roster to still wear the dual flag paint..... aside from the 4507 which was given a extremely lame makeover after a collision, losing it's italicized nose logo.
I tried to get in closer by adding a 20mm extension tube to my 100mm macro lens while working in the direct early morning light. Not as sharp as I was hoping but I wanted the shot with the two bees so I'm reluctantly accepting the results I got with the settings I used. Shooting against the white flower was challenging because it blows out quickly. Another lesson for me and I am grateful to learn and walk away with additional knowledge. If you are in the states, Happy 4th of July, enjoy the day off and I'll look forward to fireworks pictures tomorrow.
