A wolf in high key, I guess is better than a wolf in sheep's clothing, right?

Snowy background

Saw this magnificent grey wolf residing at the time I took this photo at the Alaskan Wildlife Conversation Center, in Alaska obvs. It's the closest I've been to a wolf in the wild and even from a distance they looked proud and intelligent and amazing.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care.

I don't want to alarm you, but some people close to me say that once a month, on the full moon, I look a bit like this. (That's the Halloween scary bit for those in parts of the world that celebrate it ;)

Thank you in advance to everyone that comments and/or faves my picture. They are all immensely appreciated.

The Arctic wolf, Canis lupus arctos, also known as the white wolf or polar wolf, is a subspecies of grey wolf native to Canada's Queen Elizabeth Islands, from Melville Island to Ellesmere Island.

Arctic wolves inhabit the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. Thanks to its isolation, the Arctic wolf is not threatened by hunting and habitat destruction in the same way as its southern relatives. But it does face threats. In 1997 there was a decline in the Arctic wolf population and its prey, muskoxen, and Arctic hares.

Happy Weekend, dear friends!

Photographed at a wolf sanctuary. Not a zoo.

The sanctuary is for wolves rescued from the wild that could not be let loose due to injury or their inability to live without human assistance.

They are not caged and can run free within the many acres of the sanctuary.

Three wolf cubs at the entrance of the den, France

Breeding occurs between February and April, only the alpha male and female will mate and she will give birth to the pups alone in her den. After the first month, they emerge from the den with her. It is the responsibility of all the wolves in the pack to help to raise the offspring. They will take turns caring for them while other members go out to hunt. Even with the entire pack caring for them, less than half of all pups survive the first year.

The pups in a wolf pack have a great deal of freedom and privileges. In fact, they are often able to do more and to benefit more than some of the adults within the pack that have a very low ranking.

When they are about two years old they are mature, and they may stay within their own pack and be given a place on the social ladder or they can also leave that pack and go to form one of their own. Males often leave while females choose to stay in the pack they were born into.

The Wolf is back in Holland.

January's first full moon is known as the Wolf moon apparently from the howling of hungry wolves in winter.

It was snowing when I took this picture. It is at a Wildlife Refuge in West Yellowstone, Mt. These animals will be return the wild. This wolf wasn't trusting me so I took a quick photo and left.

I think a Pardosa amentata ID, but it is just as likely to be Pardosa saltans... Or indeed a Common Fox-spider ~ Alopecosa pulverulenta I do get a tad confused with the variable Lycosidae.

Dieses Bild stammt vom Jahresende 2018. Der Wolf freute sich über die schöne Wintersonne und stolzierte umher. In einem Lichtspot habe ich ihn dann erwischen können..

This picture was taken in late 2018. The wolf was happy about the low winter sun and walked around. I took a picture of it in a spotlight..

"The men of Torvaldsland," he cried, "are upon you!" ~Marauders of Gor, page 39

I looked to the man behind me, and to the others. They lifted their axes in their right hand. It was the salute of Torvaldsland. I heard their cheers. Marauders of Gor, page 43

My then boyfriend, now hubby, carved it for me during the summer between our junior and senior years in college. Although we went to the same school, our homes were in different states, so we were separated for the whole summer! Only letters and occasional phone calls back then - no email or text. I remember reimbursing my parents for one call I made to him. It was about $10 for an hour or so. LOL

A dream come true... after several year looking for a wild individual, I finally was able to see and photograph two of them at Serra da Canastra - Minas Gerais. This is a male. More to pictures in due course!

Facts: The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a large canine of South America. It is found in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay, and is almost extinct in Uruguay. Its markings resemble those of foxes, but it is neither a fox nor a wolf. It is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon (meaning "golden dog").

It is the largest canine in South America, weighing 20–30 kg (44–66 lb) and up to 110 cm (43 in) at the withers. Its long, thin legs and dense reddish coat give it a distinct appearance. The maned wolf is a crepuscular and omnivorous animal adapted to the open environments of the South American savanna, with an important role in the seed dispersal of fruits, especially the wolf apple (Solanum lycocarpum). The maned wolf is a solitary animal. It communicates primarily by scent marking, but also gives a loud call known as "roar-barking". This mammal lives in open and semi-open habitats, especially grasslands with scattered bushes and trees, in the Cerrado of south, central-west, and southeastern Brazil; Paraguay; northern Argentina; and Bolivia east and north of the Andes, and far southeastern Peru (Pampas del Heath only). It is very rare in Uruguay, possibly being displaced completely through loss of habitat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as near threatened, while it is considered a vulnerable species by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maned_wolf

New post of the Alpha male from the wolf den of last summer.

So far, I have had no luck in finding more than wolf tracks this winter, but it is not for lack of trying.
