The Malabar Trogon (Harpactes fasciatus) is a species of bird in the trogon family. It is found in the forests of Sri Lanka and peninsular India. In India it is mainly found in the Western Ghats, hill forests of central India and in parts of the Eastern Ghats. They are insectivorous and although not migratory they may make seasonal movements in the hill regions.

The Worcester Locomotive Society (WLS) was founded in 1960 and is still active with more than 1 thousand active supporters. The WLS is dedicated to the support and study of Worcester’s railways and members are also active in the restoration and preservation of rolling stock and locomotives. The WLS is affiliated with the South Devon Railway.

The badge appears to feature a King Class 4-6-0 steam locomotive of which three have been preserved. This locomotive may be the King George V – can anyone please confirm this?

Tiruchchirappalli, 10 Feb 1980

The last stop on our steam bash in India in 1980 was Tiruchchirappalli, often contracted to Trichy. We rode a stopping rain from Erode the day before behind a WL 4-6-2 and spent the night before going to the shed on the 10th. We left for Sri Lanka in the afternoon, so these appear to have been taken around noon, which accounts for the challenging lighting.

Slide film had maybe 1 f/stop of range between shadows and highlights, so if you expose for the general scene, shadows were often black during the middle of the day and the closer you get to the equator, the more directly overhead the sun is a noon time, so under the running boards is frequently dark on these shots. To make things even more fun, it appears that most engines were facing north on the south side of the shed.

On the plus side, Trichy was a meter and broad gauge shed, so in addition to WPs and the less common WLs, there were YPs and YGs in abundance. It was also a good place for WW2 US power with both broad gauge AWC 2-8-0s (aka S-160s) and meter gauge MAWD (or WD) 2-8-2s present.

We had an enjoyable visit and then it was time to head for the airport, where we took an Indian Airlines Hawker Siddeley 748, a twin engine turboprop, to Colombo for a week in Sri Lanka, which we spent recovering from our marathon trip around India.

Built in 1890 and still an active lighthouse. The cast iron tower is 30 feet tall and equipped with a modern optic which flashes white every 2.5 seconds.

Located in Barry on the west breakwater about 9 miles southwest of Cardiff.

Barry is now a sleepy small seaport, popular with yachtsman and tourists, but in 1913 more coal was shipped from this port than anywhere else in the world.

You can't quite tell it from the pictures, but I got a bob with a swingline, and I freakin' LOVE it. I was trying to let it grow out more so I could give more to Locks of Love, but it was starting to tear and knot up, and my hairdresser said it was TIME. We can still donate what she took, and they'll sell it to offset costs, but it won't be enough to make a wig. :(

Built in 1916. The octagonal masonry tower is 59 feet tall and rises from a two story keeper's house. The light signal is a white or red flash, depending on direction, every 10 seconds.

Skokholm Island is a small island off the southwest tip of Wales that was purchased by a wildlife trust in 2012. The 4 rooms in the keeper's quarters are available for rental although the island can only be accessed by boat in good weather. Our tour group was unable to land because of rough seas and some fog.

Located 5 miles northwest of St. Ann's Head.

Built in 1821 but inactive for many years. The round stone tower is 49 feet tall. Located at the end of a pier on Salt Island at the north entrance to Holyhead's old harbor.

Built in 1835 by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board,, although the station was established in 1779. The structure looks more like a castle than a lighthouse. The lantern room is at ground level with an observation window just above, all in the front of the castellated main building. The whole structure is surrounded by a high stone wall. The light signal is a white light, 8 seconds on and 2 off.

The lighthouse was transferred to Trinity House in 1973 and sold and made into a B and B in 2000.

Located on Point Lynas about one mile from the village of Llaneilian..

150278 at Barry Docks, South Wales. 17 April 2023.

Built in 1776 but inactive since 1883 when replaced by a lightship. . The round brick tower is 58 feet tall and has been private property for over 100 years. Located on the beach about one half mile from the Point of Ayr and once marked the entrance to the River Dee estuary. Water laps at the lighthouse base at high tide.

The whole surrounding area is a nature preserve.

This was the last stop on our tour of Welsh lighthouses, as we soon crossed over into England and the approaches to Liverpool.
