The Old Station, Tintern. Near the village of Tintern (Tyndym), in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Tuesday 2nd of February 2016.
About the photograph and the photo-shoot.
This is Sally, a model living in Wales whom I booked for a couple of hours outdoor photo-shoot. I got in touch with Sally through one of the online modelling website, I can’t remember which ones, but could have been PurplePort or another website. After pre-shoot communications, we arranged to meet up at The Old Station, Tintern.
She arrived with her husband and their little girl, and they arrived first, then enjoy a little bit of a day out around the location, while she waited for me to arrive on time. When I arrived and was looking for her, she spotted me, so she waved me over.
The photo-shoot was split into two sections, one hour each. The first section was mainly fashion like photo-shoot, right next to the old railway carriages.
Here, she is wearing a casual style winter outfit, which is of a tan coloured faux fur jacket bought from a charity shop, along with her own sweater, blue jeans, and flat heeled boots.
Here, she is posing next to an old and refurbished railway carriage which is a static display on what is left of the railway tracks, outside the old railway station. For more details about the railway station, feel free to read the article under the heading of About the location below.
I have previously uploaded the colour version of this shot in my Photostream a few years ago, but figure to try to convert this into black and white, in Adobe Lightroom, and adjust settings for a different feel to the portrait.
Here, she was standing on the platform, and leaning against one of the carriages, while I was on the ground, taking an upwards angle photo of her.
After those shots, she changed to a different fur jacket, and posed next to a different carriage. You can find them in the album titled Sally.
About the location.
The Old Station or Tintern railway station, is a former railway station on the Wye Valley Railway line that ran approximately 15 miles between the towns of Monmouth to the north and Chepstow in the south.
The station opened in November 1878 and was one of the four stations along the line, and the railway company chose to build a large station as they were hoping to generate more income from tourist visiting the nearby Tintern Abbey.
The Wye Valley Railway line was a railway line along the lower Wye Valley and often crossed over between Wales and England due to the River Wye being used as the border between the two countries.
The railway line was in use between 1876 to 1964, and was operated by Great Western Railway (GWR) until taken over by British Rail (BR). Once BR took over the railway line, they reviewed its viability and stopped passenger services in 1959, while allowing goods transportation to continue until the line closed in 1964.
The rail station was bought by the local country council, refurbished it into a café and exhibition, then opened to the public. Monmouthshire County Council later bought a couple of old carriages, which were refurbished as gift shop, tourism information, and an exhibition. The two carriages are displayed on what’s left of the rail tracks.

A woman in a festive outfit strides through a subway station, phone in hand, embodying the holiday rush.
Another one from a couple weeks ago.
We stopped to take some photos after an art show. We set up near the old metal frame grasshopper adorned with lights. We had some leftover sparklers from another project and decided to light them up.
It was quite windy that night so you can see the sparks getting taken by the wind.
Always a fun time with sparklers; the light they give off is so easy and fun to work with. Throw in some blurry bokeh and you'll have a good time.
Alex and I had previous worked together earlier this Summer for her Senior Portraits and I immediately knew I'd love to work with her again in the future. I got to try out a brand new location which I am pretty darn excited about! Lots of color, texture, and it's perfect during these dreary winter months. Really excited about this set!

About the photographs.

This is Olivia, a model I found on the modelling website called ModelFolio. I booked her for a two-hours outdoor photo-shoot in the countryside outside of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd). The photo-shoot was to be a three part theme which is 1) a fashion photo-shoot showcasing fur fashion, 2) a girls-and-cars themed photo-shoot, and finally 3) as part of a graphic design project. The above photo was carried out for the graphic design project.
Here, Olivia is pretending to be a fictional private detective, in a non-existence television show. The purpose of this photo-shoot is for me to create a DVD case cover design. I would prefer to do my own photo-shoots of models I book for my own graphic design projects, rather than to use someone else’s photos of real actresses, and come up with totally fictional studio name, titles, and story plot summary of my own.
After all, I’m not only a photographer, but also a graphic designer. I trained in graphic design at college, while I worked as an assistant for a professional photographer. This is just a graphic design project, mainly to keep up my skills and experience, and also to showcase my graphic design work.
I’ve designed the DVD case cover, and will display it in my Photostream at a later date.
In the above photo: Olivia plays the role of a fictional private detective, who would have been hired by a client to carry out an investigation. Her investigations would lead her to a farmland, and you can see her holding a map, as if to check and confirm the location. It is a proper Ordnance Survey map used as a prop. As the road was extremely less busy, barely a couple of cars would come by in an hour, not counting a tractor, so it was safer for her to walk in the middle of the road as seen in the photograph. I asked Olivia to act like as if she drove the Land Rover, parked there, got out and looking around, like as if tracking down someone or something.
The car behind her is a Land Rover Freelander, and is actually my own car, but for the fictional story, she would be the kind of person who would prefer a trusty vehicle that she had for years, and that this would be the kind of outfits she would likely to wear.
Olivia is wearing a winter outfit containing of a Size S black faux fur jacket with leopard patterns collar and cuffs from Leana London. The company is likely to have been a manufacturer or a retailer, but there is not much details about Leana, and the company may have closed down before the Internet became popular.
She is also wearing a white cowl neck jumper, the design of the cowl gives the illustration of wearing a scarf, along with black trousers, and white ankle height trainers.
The car behind her is a 2005 Land Rover Freelander four-wheel-drive.
It is a diesel 2.0L Td4 SE model with manual gearbox, and a BMW M47 engine. This is a 5-door compact SUV, and is considered to be an affordable and entry-level model in the Land Rover production range.
The tyres seen on this car are BF Goodrich T/A KO2 All Terrain tyres on steel wheels.
The first generation Freelander was built between 1997 to 2006, and the second generation from 2006 to 2015, when it was replaced by the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Near the Newport City Footbridge over the River Usk, in the city of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd), Gwent, Wales (Cymru), United Kingdom, on Friday 29th January 2016.
Photos were taken opposite the Friars Walk Shopping Centre, and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, next to the A4042 known as Usk Way. It is also near the University of South Wales, Newport City Campus.
About this photograph.
Lulu, a model booked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot, is wearing a typical women’s winter outfit. She is seen posing in a size XL animal print faux fur coat from Roman Originals, along with her own dark blue jeans tucked into her own brown flat-heeled knee-length boots with full length zippers. She is also wearing a casual top under the fur coat, not seen in the photos. The weather was gloomy with light winds hence her hair is sometimes seen flying in the wind.
At that time of the photo-shoot, I had an idea for a graphic design project, which was to create a non-existence fictional television series DVD case cover (or as Apple’s iTunes Store would call it “album art”) and a DVD boxset. For this, I would prefer to use my own photographs to go into my own design, rather than using stock photographs.
The idea is that the leading character, named Kimberley, would be someone juggling between her personal life at home, and her job working for the police. The plot of the stories is mainly crime or murder mystery and detective drama, with her family and relationship problems as a sub-plot.
So I asked Lulu, to pose as if the leading character is lost in thoughts on the subject of her personal problems, and of the police investigation. Lulu did a great way of posing for the kind of photographs I needed, and thankfully the gloomy damp weather seems to give a better illustration for the photos I needed.
I have previously uploaded a colour version of this, you can see it in the Album titled “Lulu” or jump to the last page of my Photostream to view it. I figured to use Adobe Lightroom to convert it into Black and White, then adjust different levels, to try to make it different.
About the subject(s).
Roman Originals was originally established in 1957 in Birmingham. The family owned business started as a ladieswear manufacturing company, making various ladies outfits including daywear, eveningwear, workwear, and outerwear. They design and made women’s outfits for all ages and of various sizes from 10 to 22.
In 1998, Roman Originals opened their first retail shop, and over time, expanded to a chain of about 150 shops in the United Kingdom. They later renamed to simply Roman, but still trading as Roman Originals Plc.
Kimberley is simply a title for a fictional crime/police story I came up with, and used this as a base for a graphic design project. The project was to create a (non-existence) fictional television series DVD case cover and a DVD Boxset packaging.

About the photograph.

Olivia is seen here posing in a New Look Size L cream coloured faux fur jacket with the hood up. She is also wearing a white cowl neck jumper, the design of the cowl gives the illustration of wearing a scarf.
She is posing behind a Land Rover Freelander, simply by leaning on the engine hood, and pose as if looking and thinking. In the background is the river, and there is a boat barely visual in the background.
Olivia is a mode lbooked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot project, and the first part of the photo-shoot was at a car park outside of an inn, just to the north of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd).
Special thanks to the owner of the inn for giving me permissions to use the car park for on-location photo-shoot.
The vehicle is a 2005 Land Rover Freelander.
It is a diesel 2.0L Td4 SE model with manual gearbox, and a BMW M47 engine. The tyres are BF Goodrich T/A KO2 All Terrain tyres on steel wheels. The Freelander was an entry-level Land Rover from 1997 to 2006, before being replaced by the Freelander 2 until 2015.
As Olivia was booked for two-hours, we were at a different location only for 50 minutes before coming over to this location, and spent another 50 minutes here.
What is this all about?
This is the first in a series of a long-term project I started working on, which is called Project: Freelander Ladies. It is a variation of the so called Land Rover Girls type of photographs. Generally, the majority of the Land Rover Girls kind of photos tend to be of younger women posing next to mostly either the Series or the Defender production models, and less common are the Discovery or Range Rover models. There are barely enough photos of women posing next to a Freelander, so my aim is to create some, specially for the Freelander owners and fans to enjoy.
In addition to this being a “cars and girls” kind of photography which is the main role, there are other roles, including photographs needed for a graphic design project.

About this photograph.
This is Lulu, a Welsh model living in Newport, whom I got in contract with through a modelling website, and arranged for a two hours outdoor photo-shoot.
At that time, I was a single parent. I arranged for the ex-wife to pick up the kids from school, and have them for the weekend. So on that day, after I dropped the kids off at school, I grabbed my photographic kit, got in my car, and drove off to Newport.
I met her and her husband at their home in Newport. After a cup of tea, breaking the ice, and stuff like that, we went into Newport city centre for the first stage of the outdoor photo-shoot.
When that was done, we returned back to their street, and the second stage of the outdoor photo-shoot was done near their home.
Here, Lulu is posing in her yellow t-shirt and dark blue jeans tucked into her knee-length boots, she is also wearing a light colour belt and a pearl necklace.
She is also wearing a Size 22 brown coloured M&Co faux fur coat with hood pulled up over her head.
Lulu is posing by leaning on the rails, and looking as if she’s deep in thoughts, thinking about something.
In the background is the Newport Transporter Bridge.
About M&Co.
In 1834, Neil McGeoch started a pawnbroker business, in Paisley, Scotland, and over the many years, the family business expanded to 6 pawnbroker shops.
By 1953, the brothers Len and Iain McGeoch decided to convert the pawnbroker shops into clothing stores, and traded as Mackays Stores Limited. Over the years, they acquired a few other clothing retail business and expanded to approximately at least 140 by 1986, up to 270 by 2005.
In 2005, the company was rebranded as M&Co for a more modern image, and went on to operate over 300 stores, including few overseas and an online store.
The company first specialised in women’s clothes, later expanded to include men’s and children’s clothes.
Sadly due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the early 2020s, the company struggled with business as customers stayed at home, and struggled to keep going.
The company finally went into administration, and it was reported that the branding was bought by the McGeoch family. By spring of 2023, M&Co was closing down.

About the photograph.
This is Kylie Britain, a model I booked for a two hours outdoor photo-shoot.
She is seen posing in a casual winter style outfit demonstrating a white T-shirt, blue jeans tucked into below-knee length boots, and a large blue M&S faux fur coat. The blue fur coat is part of their M&S Collections range. She is also wearing her own bobble hat.
While planning the photo-shoot, I asked her to wear whatever casual outfit she thinks goes well with the blue fur coat, which is why she chose to use the bobble hat.
The photo was taken on the grounds of a former garden centre, long since closed down and knocked down.
In the photograph, she is seen posing with my Minolta X-700 manual focus 35mm film SLR camera, which I have since 1985, but sadly stopped working, so I kept it purely for sentimental value and as props.
She is posing as if she’s someone, an artist or a photographer, whom is out and about, doing some photography.
Kylie is also an actress, have appeared in various publication, and have her own video channel on her website.
About M&S.
Marks and Spencer, often commonly abbreviated as M&S, was formed in 1884 by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in Leeds, as a penny bazaar.
Over the next many years, they moved to different towns and cities, and had many market stalls around the North West of England. Spencer passed away in 1905, and Marks died in 1907.
Michael Marks’s son, Simon Marks became the chairman, acquired other penny bazaars, and the company grew into a retail empire.
They sold textiles and food, they also sold clothes under the St Michael brand, which was then dropped in 2000. M&S often sells quality food and clothes.

She is posing as if she’s checking the camera setting and looking to take some shots. Those photographs are as stand alone photos and also as part of a graphic design asset.

What is this all about?

In this case, I needed Olivia to pose as if she is either a journalist or private detective taking photos, for the purpose of designing a book cover or a DVD case cover. I will showcase those photos in near future.
Trivia: I directed Olivia on posing as a character taking photos of suspicious activity, by saying to her something like “Imagine in your mind, you’re a detective taking photos of someone to be used as evidence.” So Olivia posed in ways that I considered to be what I’m looking for, the right kind of photos I needed (i.e.: for back cover of a DVD case design).
But there was this one time that she posed by looking at the back of the camera, pretending to be checking photos on an LCD screen. I had to stop shooting, and explained that this part is a bad idea. I explained that anyone familiar with cameras may recognise it as a manual focus film camera, which does not have a monitor on the back for checking photos. In novels or movies, this would be what is called a “plot hole” or “anachronism.” I suggest that if she wants to pose as if checking the camera, she could pretend to be checking the control settings on top of the camera.

About the photograph.
This is Lulu, wearing a medium length, size 22, brown faux fur coat with hood, from M&Co. Here, she is seen with the hood up.
Lulu is a model I booked for a two hours outdoors photo-shoot, in and around Newport, Wales. For the outdoors photo-shoot, you can view them in my Album titled “Lulu”
After the outdoors part was done, there was plenty of time left out of the two-hours booked slot, there was maybe 30 minutes, maybe 45 minutes, left out of the 2 hours.
Lulu did not like the idea of myself paying a full 2 hours fee for just like 1 hour of photo-shoot, so she and her husband let me use their made-shift studio in a spare room, to do some more photography.
I agreed and took the opportunity to build up more experience.
Between 1985 to 1999, because I am a deaf person, I have struggled with getting a college course in photography, struggled to get a job working in photography, also struggled with trying to become a photographer myself. This was because in those days, in the UK, there were still discrimination towards the disabled people.
My family, family friends, teachers, career advisors, and social workers, they all would say things like “You can’t be a photographer because you’re deaf. How are you going to communicate with people?”
But in the 21st century, discrimination is mostly just about out of the way, and a lot of people are becoming more open minded. I got to work with 6 different models so far (at time of writing this), and in all cases, despite myself being deaf with speech impaired, we have got on well.
As a matter of a fact, those models also remarked that they enjoyed working with me, some mentioned that my way of directing them to what kind of poses, is clearly understandable.
I figure that taking the opportunity to keep taking more photos of Lulu, in their home, would help me find more new ways of communications with the model.
