William and Louisa (Muegge) Deininger, my great-great grandparents

Louisa was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S in 1892. William was born, raised, and died in Galena, Illinois. I assume this picture was taken in the United States, probably in East Galena, Illinois. (Galena isn't that big a town so I don't know why they are identified as living in East Galena in the U.S. Census. It takes about 5 minutes to drive through the town.)

William died in 1932 at 72, so the picture was taken before than. This is the only picture I have of them together and fairly young (middle aged). Of course, looking at William's beard, it's hard to tell if he's 40 or 70.

The only other pictures I have of Louisa are when she is elderly. She died in 1952 at 86.

William Wilberforce (24 August 1759 – 29 July 1833), British politician, philanthropist and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade was born in this 17th century house.

Apart from William Wilberforce, there were several other occupants who lived at no. 25 High Street, otherwise known as Wilberforce House .

Hugh Lister commissioned 25 High Street to be built by William Catlyn around 1660 for the Lister family. It is believed that the Lister family, who were also a merchant family, acquired the plot around 1590.

In 1709 John Thornton, a fellow merchant, obtained 25 High Street. Alderman Wilberforce (William’s grandfather) worked for John Thornton as an apprentice. In 1711 he married Thornton’s daughter, Sarah. After John died in 1729 the house passed to his son Godfrey; in 1732 Wilberforce bought 25 High Street and began making his fortune in trade.

William and Carl served with the 2nd Platoon 12th Infantry 4th Infantry Division.

The image on the left features a portrait of William Ewart Gladstone, a prominent British statesman, along with an envelope addressed to him in 1837. William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was a British Liberal Party statesman and four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The portrait is a wood engraving from 1898, after a photograph taken during his fourth ministry. Gladstone served as Prime Minister across four separate terms: 1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886, and 1892-1894. He was known for significant domestic reforms and his "Midlothian campaigns," which are considered early examples of modern political campaigning.

The envelope is addressed to "T. D.. Anderson Esq" at "4 Cornhill, Liverpool", but includes the signature "WE Gladstone" in the bottom left, indicating it was likely part of his correspondence. The lower part of the image shows an envelope with his signature and a date stamp of April 1837, which corresponds to when he was an MP and a junior Lord of the Treasury. This envelope is a historical artifact known as a "free frank," a system that allowed certain officials, such as Members of Parliament, to send mail without charge, a practice common before the introduction of uniform postage stamps (like the Penny Black in 1840).

"Glen" who was a partner in the Liverpool shipping firm of Glen and Anderson. The "Glen" in the company name likely refers to the other principal partner, but their specific first name is not mentioned in the provided snippets.

Thomas Darnley Anderson resided at 4 Cornhill, Liverpool, which in the mid-to-late 1800s became associated with the Cornhill Works, a business manufacturing cooking ranges for ships. In the 1830s, Liverpool was a major hub for international trade, particularly cotton. He was a wealthy Scottish cotton merchant and a prominent local politician in Liverpool during the 19th century. He was active in local politics from the 1840s through the 1860s. He was the father of Rupert Darnley Anderson and several other children. He was married to Dorothy Horsfall, whose father was also a rich cotton merchant. Initially, he settled in the Everton area of Liverpool. After his marriage, the family moved to "West Dingle," a large mansion in the Dingle area of Liverpool. He was a partner in the Liverpool shipping firm Glen and Anderson. His public role in local politics was significant, and he served as the Mayor of Liverpool during the years 1859-1860. The family's wealth and influence in Liverpool business and politics meant they were associated with other important figures of the day, including William Gladstone. His sons later became well-known footballers for local teams in Liverpool.

Connection to Gladstone: The correspondence with William Ewart Gladstone, a rising MP and future Prime Minister, suggests Mr. Anderson was a person of some standing or connection to a trade that was relevant to Gladstone's political or business interests at the time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This item is an envelope front dated 8 Dec 69 (December 8, 1869), from W. E. Gladstone to A. E. West at 10 Downing Street, London.

Sender: W. E. Gladstone, who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time of the letter.

Recipient: Algernon West (referred to as A. E. West on the envelope), who later became Mr. Gladstone's private secretary.

Context: West had been pressed to go into Parliament, but felt no disposition to yield. When Gladstone took office, West was called upon to devote himself, unofficially at first, to the service of the Prime Minister. The letter likely relates to the general business of government or their working relationship.

Historical Significance: The date coincides with the period of the Red River Rebellion in Canada, during which the Métis formed a provisional government. W. E. Gladstone's government was involved in the negotiations surrounding the transfer of Rupert's Land to Canada, a significant event in Canadian history.

A. E. West refers to Sir Algernon West, a prominent British civil servant who served as Private Secretary to Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

Sir Algernon Edward West GCB JP (4 April 1832 – 21 March 1921) was an English civil servant. He acted as Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister William Gladstone.

Career and Relationship with Gladstone

Early Role: Algernon West was initially called upon to work for Gladstone in an unofficial capacity around the time Gladstone took office as Prime Minister in December 1868.

Private Secretary: He later became Gladstone's principal private secretary. Their working relationship is well-documented in historical accounts.

Political Aspirations: Although he had been urged by others to pursue a seat in Parliament, West chose to focus on his civil service career and support Gladstone.

The envelope, dated December 8, 1869, was a piece of correspondence from Gladstone to West, addressed to West at 10 Downing Street, which was both the Prime Minister's residence and office.

The person in the photo is William Richard Tolbert Jr., who served as the 20th President of Liberia from 1971 until his assassination in a 1980 coup d'état.

Identification and Historical Context - Role: Tolbert Jr. was a prominent Liberian politician and the last president from the True Whig Party, which ruled the country for over a century.

Assassination: He was overthrown and murdered in a violent military coup led by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe on April 12, 1980.

Aftermath: His death marked the end of the long-standing American-Liberian political dominance in the country and ushered in a period of military dictatorship and civil war.

Liberian President. Trained as a civil servant, he entered the country's House of Representatives in 1943 for the True Whig Party, then the only legal party in the country. He was elected vice president to William V.S. Tubman in 1955 and served in that position until Tubman's death in 1971. Upon becoming president with Tubman's death, Tolbert initiated some liberal reforms and allowed the creation of an opposition party, the Progressive Alliance of Liberia, the first opposition in 125 years of Liberia's independence. Though reelected in 1975, his government was criticized sharply for the deep economic disparities between different sectors of the population, notably the Americo-Liberians, who had dominated the country since independence, and the various indigenous ethnic groups that constituted the majority of the population. Tensions came to a head in April 1979, when hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of the capital, Monrovia, demonstrating against the sharp rise in the price of rice. Tolbert ordered his troops to fire on the demonstrators, and some seventy people were killed. Despite efforts to restore order, rioting ensued throughout Liberia, and attempts to quash the opposition by arresting its leaders failed. On April 12, 1980, Tolbert was overthrown and killed in a coup led by Samuel K. Doe, an ethnic Krahn. His body was thrown into a mass grave.

William Robert Reid (b. February 1857 in Victoria, Norfolk Co, Ontario, Canada – d. 18 October 1917 in Arrowhead, Columbia-Shuswap, British Columbia, Canada)

His wife - Hectorina McLean (b. 22 June 1870 in Baddeck, Victoria, Nova Scotia – d. 7 December 1934 in Langley, British Columbia, Canada) - they were married c. 1900 in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Their child - Hazel Ella Reid (b. 1 July 1902 in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada – d. 18 May 1987 in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada) - her husband was - Benjamin "Benny" McAllister Rauch (b. 13 April 1896 in Burrell Township, Decatur County, Iowa, USA - d. 22 Dec 1973 (aged 77) in Creston, British Columbia, Canada) - they had seven children during their marriage.

In January 1901, Bourne Bros. sold their dry goods and clothing business in Revelstoke, B.C. to Reid and Young to concentrate on their growing grocery and hardware business, with newly established branches in Nakusp and New Denver.

Revelstoke Herald Sep 21, 1901 - Reid & Young's New Store. The new store erected by Thos. Downie on McKenzie Ave., makes a great improvement to the appearance of the street. The building is two stories high, 22 x 64, making one of the most commodions stores in town. D. McCarty has made a good job of the contract for erecting it and turned out a building, which is a credit to the city. W. G. Birney is doing the painting in his usual artistic style. The windows are of plate glass and he plans for the electric lighting of the store are both novel and effective, the fittings for the windows and ceiling lights being of very tasteful design and furnished with reflectors. Messrs Reid and young are open for business today. Their stock is newly imported and comprises full lines of the usual dry goods staples, gents furnishings and boys clothing. A specially attractive feature are the new French flannel and silk blouses and the dress goods present a choice, and variety unsurpased in the city. The boot and shoe department will show full lines of every kind of boots and shoes for both sexes and all ages.

Around 1907 William Robert Reid and Frank Young opened the Reid and Young General Store in Arrowhead, B.C. - William Robert Reid was the manager.

In 1907 - (Free Mason) Arrow Lodge, No 47, was the next Lodge established. Its home was at Arrowhead, a village at the north end of Upper Arrow Lake, a part of the Columbia River, at the terminus of the Arrow Lake branch of the Canadian Pacific Railway, where the steamers from Robson connected with the railway. The chief support of the settlement was the timber in its vicinity, and when this was cut, the settlement faded out. However, in 1907 it was a flourishing town and, of course, wanted a Masonic Lodge. On March Ii, of that year Grand Master Schofield granted a dispensation for a Lodge there with W. Bro. William Robert Reid of the firm of Reid & Young in Revelstoke as its first W. Master, and R. W. Bro. H. EcPherson, of Tuscan Lodge, No. 39, the D.D.G.N. for District No. 6, as his representative.
