I recently posted an image from a road trip. A number of Flickr contacts commented on how much they enjoy road trips, or would like to. Why? There are a number of reasons, but this image from Tower Rock State Park speaks to one of them: road trips can be learning experiences.
Tower Rock State Park is near the community of Cascade in the state of Montana. The centerpiece of the park is Tower Rock, a 424-foot -high rock formation which marks the entrance to the Missouri River Canyon in the Adel Mountains Volcanic Field. It was well known to Native Americans, and considered a sacred place by the Piegan Blackfeet.
Tower Rock received its current name when Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition visited the site in 1805. Railroad and highway development in the late 1800s and 1900s skirted Tower Rock, but the landform itself remained pristine. The 87.2 acres encompassing Tower Rock was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 18, 2002. The 140-acre Tower Rock State Park was created around the National Historic Site in 2004.
On my road trip, I didn't linger in Tower Rock State Park. But after I composed this image, I read about it. I learned that Montana had hosted volcanic eruptions, that there is an Adel Mountain Range, that this was Lewis and Clark territory, that the land is considered sacred by some, that it would be interesting to spend some time there.
I do not why, but today I felt a little melancholic about the fast passage of time.
I took this picture four months ago, when Autumn was showing us its best colors. Currently, in Madrid we are immersed in an early Spring, with the almond trees blooming...
Going back in time is always something that motivates me.
These Cypresses in the park were showing vibrant colors after a pleasing rainfall, one of these that we are currently missing in Madrid.

Cipreses otoñales en el Parque Juan Carlos I, Madrid, España
No sé por qué, pero hoy me sentí un poco melancólico por el rápido paso del tiempo.
Esta foto la tomé hace cuatro meses, cuando el otoño nos mostraba sus mejores colores. Actualmente, en Madrid estamos inmersos en una primavera temprana, con los almendros en flor...
Retroceder en el tiempo siempre es algo que me motiva.
Estos cipreses del parque mostraban colores vibrantes tras una agradable lluvia, una de esas que nos falta en Madrid.

The Netflix drama “13 Reasons Why” is filmed, in part, down the road a couple of miles where I used to live - in the city of Vallejo, California.
As the signs in the window indicate, this is a film set and it is a “FAKE PHARMACY.” There is a real pharmacy close by on the same street in an equally charming old building – causing no end of confusion for residents and visitors alike. I guess someone hoped some signage would help.
When he was younger, our son was afraid to step over the threshold to go outdoors. At the time, we did not know about his autism, that diagnosis came later. Try as we might, he would always resist going out and to see what the world had to offer. He was afraid. In time we learned that his fears were based in the uncertainty of what was out there. Home was his safe area. He could relax. Everything was in its place.
To help him, I encouraged him to look out through the window. His window. It was safe looking out from indoors and when he felt unwell through the many, many seizures he is tormented by, just getting to the window is a major effort for him. Through the window was a world he could familiarise himself with.
Supported by myself to point out the various aspects of our garden, or nearby landmarks which were visible, his confidence grew. Familiarity of what he saw became routine. This accepted routine enabled the next step, to cross the threshold.
Encouraged to use my old camera, our son eagerly took pictures from his bedroom window, or the living room window and we ventured into the garden to look at what he had pictured up close. A new world opened up to him. Gradually we ventured further and pictured all that we saw.
‘Marc’s Window’ has become an intervention to help our son overcome both fears and pain and help focus his mind to prevent it searching out those dark places.
This success I share as it may just help someone have a similar idea.
