Common Moorhens were fairly common but less common than their cousins the American Coots, which were widespread and present in large numbers.

This delightful little white-striped black is less than an inch wide from from one wingtip to the other. Find these tiny moths flying during daylight hours in dark damp shady woodlands where jewelweed (touch-me-not), the host plant for their caterpillars, grows. I rarely get a view of these white-striped blacks from below and out in the sun like this one was last summer.

When you think film is fully rewound and it is time to give light another opportunity for analog creativity… or at least let’s put it this way!

Evening falling, dirty truck window, the hills become a silhouette and the curving yellow stripes seems to go on forever when I am tired and heading home.

Taken in British Columbia's Fraser Valley by David.

I was happy to get the opportunity to take some decent photos of this species. They are somewhat uncommon and often very skittish in this area.

Same species as yesterday's post, but this one is the more typical variant called the 'white stripe', since those markings are so clearly visible on its head.

According to allaboutbirds.com,

the White-throated Sparrow is a 'large, plump sparrow with a long tail and fairly small bill. Bold face pattern with black and white crown stripes, yellow spot between eye and bill, and neat white throat patch on gray face and breast.'

I photographed this bird in the springtime as the leaves and blossoms were gracing us with their lovely colors.

I like the way the bird was facing the other way, but then gave me a nice facial pose when it turned back to look at me.

Although not a rare bird, this is the first White Crowned Sparrow that has appeared in my backyard in 40 years. It is a bit larger and more robust than the ever-present House Sparrows that are seen in our neighborhood.

As quickly as he appeared, he was gone, not to return.

Built in 1926, the Hotel Yorba is in southwest Detroit, MI and can be seen along I-75 near the Ambassador Bridge to Canada. The building is now used as government subsidized housing. "Hotel Yorba" is the lead single from the White Blood Cells album by the local garage rock band The White Stripes, and their first single to be released commercially in November 2001. Parts of the video for the song were recorded in room 206 and on the grounds of the of the hotel. Jack White says that as a child he heard a rumor that the Beatles had stayed there—a rumor that, although false, he loved.
