White Oak (Quercus alba) is an important lumber tree, used for furniture, flooring, and numerous other applications. For me, they are important for the remaining forests of Michigan.

The forest floor was carpeted with golden and brown oak leaves from the White Oak trees.

This image of Whiteoak Falls is from late October 2022. We got there a bit too late for full autumn colors. Fall came and went quickly everywhere around us last year.

When we saw the falls we were so disappointed seeing two large trees crossing the full face of the falls. I still took some photographs hoping I could remove them during post processing. Unfortunately, no matter what I tried, the result looked pretty poor so I gave up hope I could salvage the photo.

Then came the beta version of Photoshop Generative AI. I simply outlined the unwanted trees and in seconds a new waterfall was generated that looked remarkably like the actual falls. It also generated an image with the same exposure matching the cascades downstream. I'm still amazed by this program and its capabilities. I am so happy it worked and looks great. The long drive was not wasted after all.

This photo is from last autumn along Whiteoak Creek in far western North Carolina. It is a bit downstream from Whiteoak Falls along Wayah Road. It's a beautiful area loaded with rambling cascades.

In all honesty, I did use the new Photoshop Beta update with its new incredible generative ai. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out. There are tons of videos on YouTube about it. If you can imagine it, generative ai can likely produce it. It excels with removing objects beyond belief. In this photo, the trees in the upper left corner were lacking many autumn colors as it was late in the season. But with generative ai and about 30 seconds, it produced this result. Truly amazing. I'm still not sure what I think about the program. I will use it to remove some objects, e.g., people and perhaps add some clouds. But producing an alternate reality...maybe not so much. BUT, if I had been at this location a week earlier, this would have closely resembled this photo.

What do you think about this new technology? It's here whether we like it or not. And this is only the "Beta" version.

I finally hiked the entire Whiteoak Canyon to photograph all 6 of its waterfalls. Recent constant rainfall here in Virginia has put a good amount of running water in all of Shenandoah's waterfalls. I was on vacation the other week and I hiked to many of the falls so I could capture them amongst the vibrant Spring greenery.

This is the 60 ft. lower falls (Whiteoak Falls #6) at the canyon bottom (in the background), and I also included the cascades in front of it, just to do something different than what has already been done by others. It would have been nice to had a person (or even a dog) to use for scale.

In the Fall it is a more of a challenge than in the Spring to do more with small bird compositions than 'a bird on a stick'. I like this one on the white oak which has a bit of fall colors to help complement the orange in the crown crest.

I enjoy taking pictures on the hillside between Rownea Crest, and the small town of Rowena, Oregon. You can see the effects of the rain shadow in the sparceness of the forest, and in the spindly oaks. I had the Twirly Camera out there in June, and used up a couple rolls of film.

The Historic Columbia River Highway also runs between Mosier, and The Dalles, Oregon. It runs through a semi-arid landscape of white oaks and golden grasses. It's a complely different look than Waterfall Central to the west, and I like it a lot.

A little Photoshop magic added to a fall colors photograph. I liked the backlit trees.

I used Nik Color Effects Pro with a split neutral density filter, and detail extractor, made a layer from that, and applied the Orton Effect. I like it.

Whiteoak Canyon Falls #2 is 62 feet in height. There are six waterfalls total in Whiteoak Canyon.

It is 2.3 miles to the upper falls (Whiteoak Falls #1 which is just above the #2 waterfall) from Skyline Drive at Mile 42.6. Below the upper falls the canyon is narrow, and the trail is steep and rough. If you continue down the canyon to see all six waterfalls, and then return, you will add 2.7 miles and 1,110 feet of climbing to your hike. If you hike the Whiteoak Canyon Trail all the way to the bottom, you will come to a small parking area in Berry Hollow, this is where I opted to begin my hike (from the bottom up).

I've been wanting to do this hike for several years but didn't want to until there was a strong water flow. It was a bonus that it occurred during spring green-up.
