A large, elegant, black-and-white grebe, the Western Grebe breeds in lakes and ponds across the American West and winters primarily off the Pacific Coast.

Grebs have a dramatic, choreographed courtship display, in which the birds rush across the water with their long necks extended.

Western Grebes breed on freshwater lakes and marshes with extensive open water bordered by emergent vegetation. During winter they move to saltwater or brackish bays, estuaries, or sheltered sea coasts and are less frequently found on freshwater lakes or rivers.

Western Grebes eat mainly fish, catching them by diving in open water. They either spear prey or capture it with a forceps-like motion of the bill, taking larger prey items to the surface before swallowing. They also occasionally consume bottom-dwelling crustaceans and worms.

I watched this handsome Western Tanager as I hiked through the forest in the Cascade Mountains of British Columbia, Canada.

Look what I found at the southern entrance to Yellowstone! One of the most beautiful mountain birds of the western United States.

Monkey Mia, Western Australia.

I needed all my patience to finally get a photo of this bird. It is about to jump. They run at pace and then do a little jump to the next spot. This is the female.

Another piece of South Bay history to be lost. Western Appliance is closing down after decades in San José. I can still hear the radio jingle in my head, from when I was a kid until now, unchanged over the years.

Hopefully, the sign will be conserved somewhere. It, too, is a south bay landmark.

Grebes in general are known for their vocalizations, and Western Grebe is no exception — the loud calls of this species carry a long distance. This individual was with several others at Oak Lake in southwestern Manitoba, Canada.

These are so tiny and don't stay still for long. Th body and head on this one is just over 1/4 long (0.635 cm) The western pygmy blue is one of the smallest butterflies in the world and the smallest in North America.

Cute little Western Kingbird in Golden Valley Arizona

Male, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona

We expect a species with the name Western Bluebird will be colourful, and it doesn’t disappoint. This male has the additional highlight of an area of bright chestnut plumage. This individual was seen in the White Lake Grasslands Protected Area near Okanagan Falls in southcentral British Columbia, Canada — a great spot to sight the species.

Western lowland gorilla seen at Disney's animal kingdom theme park on the gorilla falls exploration trail during our long overdueholiday in September

We went to the Rooftop Bar at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on a saturday evening. It is a tremendous venue with a low key vibe and an eclectic mix of people of all ages. We were there at sunset and the views and colours were amazing. All photos taken were handheld with high ISO so Im surprised they came out as well as they did. I have deliberately left all the noise in this shot as I think it added to the image. In hindsight i should have shut down the shutter speed a little more. All photos taken with the ethereal filter (Urth) which softens the image a little but adds a little warmth to the scene.

Confusingly, the species Western Tanager is now placed in the Cardinals and allies family (Cardinalidae) and not the Tanagers and allies family (Thraupidae). Such are the vagaries of taxonomy…

We can all agree that this breeding male with its red and yellow plumage is a beautiful bird. The sighting was in the Williamstown Natural Area of the city of Airdrie, Alberta, Canada.

Western Meadowlark is a species renowned for its lilting song, and the birds conduct their performances from a wide variety of perches — in this instance, a haybale. That choice is certainly appropriate for its preferred habitat of open fields. [Though mowing of agricultural areas can destroy nests.] This sighting was in southern Alberta, Canada.
