I will be a Grand-Butter again!!
Today I spotted a female fluttering around the milkweed... as of tonight, I collected 83 eggs!!!!
If I hadn't seen her, I wouldn't have even checked the milkweed... it was perfect timing that I was outside this morning when she visited!
If you have room in your garden, please plant milkweed... it's the only plant the Monarch will leave her eggs and the only plant the caterpillars will eat!!
You certainly don't have to do what I do, they can take care of themselves if left outside... but their chances of survival are much less...
Bruderheim Way Station, relocated to Andrew Railway Museum. For the Railway Stations of Western Canada. group.
HWW!
This morning I had make room for more caterpillars and two of the enclosures were filled on the top with chrysalis... one had 33 and the other 20....
With one pull, I was able to bring down 12!! What an amazing sight... I'd love this around my neck!
To date I have released 55.... 27 Females / 28 Males
SO MANY more to go....
Theresienstadt Ghetto was established by the SS during World War II in the fortress town of Terezín, in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (German-occupied Czechoslovakia). Theresienstadt served as a waystation to the extermination camps. Its conditions were deliberately engineered to hasten the death of its prisoners, and the ghetto also served a propaganda role.

Today officially ends my Monarch season here on Long Island... and what an amazing season it was...
My last chrysalis eclosed with another perfect girl and she picked a perfect day to spread her wings... sun is shining with temps going up to 70*....
My count for the season was 357....
with 199 females & 158 males
Looking forward to next year and I hope to top this number...
IF YOU HAVE A GARDEN, PLEASE CONSIDER PLANTING MILKWEED... THESE MAGICAL CREATURES NEED THIS PLANT TO SURVIVE....
TROPICAL MILKWEED IS A BEAUTIFUL PLANT AND WOULD ADD SO MUCH TO YOUR GARDEN, IT CAN EVEN GROW IN CONTAINERS.... YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE CRAZY LIKE ME WITH TAKING THE CATERPILLARS IN.... BUT AS LONG AS THEY HAVE THE PLANTS TO LAY THEIR EGGS ON... MOTHER NATURE WILL HANDLE THE REST!!!

I never know who (who, who) is going to drop in for a brief stay on the tree stump standing about 50 feet beyond the back fence. On this day just after sunset it was a Great Horned Owl. In Webster, Texas.

As spring arrives I am beginning a new series of stories, tips and images from my garden where my wife and I raise and release butterflies. My blog associated with some of my images here in Flickr has been waiting patiently for me as I am currently developing new stories and photo essays. I will update the garden/butterfly story at least twice a month through the summer, for anyone interested in reading. I hope everyone will enjoy the images as I post them throughout the summer. Have a great day!

In the third part to my blog series about raising and releasing butterflies I talk about and share images of milkweed and it's use for my purposes. Essential for the Monarch Butterfly, I mention basic information on how I use it to feed them before releasing! I hope you enjoy the light read!
I DID NOT TAKE THIS IMAGE....

A white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) buck secreting from his pre-orbital gland. The pre-orbital is one of several glands on a whitetail that are used in scent marking. Deer will rub this gland on licking branches and other communication waystations as a way of delineating territory and depositing chemical cues for itself and other deer in the vicinity.
Today I released five perfect beauties... 3 females / 2 males...
This boy was the only one that stayed long enough for me to take a shot... the others were in a hurry to see Long Island!!
To date, I have released 13 - 8 females / 5 males
I have 116 hanging on the lines and so many more on top of the enclosures.... I am going to have to build an extension!!!
This year is proving very difficult for me to keep track, I have so many.... but my count is accurate when they eclose... I write down the number and sex.

A White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) buck from Willacy County, Texas.
Though whitetails may visit licking branches throughout the year, these communication waystations become especially important during the rut. Bucks visiting these sites can gather pheromonal cues from those who came before them, providing information on whether or not there may be a receptive doe nearby, and what potential rivals might be in the area.

The busy trade routes of Kaliphlin are often following paths which pass by sources of water at decent intervals. Many of these wells are protected by fortified way stations or watchtowers. Sometimes, like here along the Oil Road, the tower also contains some rooms for travelers and shade for their camels to recuperate before continuing on the road.
My entry to the 1st count-down challenge towards the 10th anniversary of Guilds of Historica, at Eurobricks.

Back in March 2019 the Los Angeles Environmental Education Fair was held at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. The 'Wildlife Waystation" was there with "Tumbleweed" the Great Horned Owl !
Luckily, I manged to take a "selfie" with Tumbleweed - check out the pupil of his eye!

"About Tumbleweed the Owl
Tumbleweed, an adult great horned owl, was brought to the Waystation by someone who found him with an injured left wing. He arrived about the same time as the 2009 Station Fire. The first animals to be evacuated were the birds as the smoke would quickly affect their lungs. While waiting to be evacuated this newcomer was on a low perch near tumbleweed, which he tried valiantly to perch on, but failed miserably, so we named him “Tumbleweed”!
Tumbleweed is a very calm raptor, who rarely makes any vocalizations. He has adjusted very well to life at the Waystation."

I have a wide variety of milkweed from Swamp, Common, Tropical and even Hairy Balls.... plus a wide assortment of flowers for them to nectar on.... I'm waiting patiently!!
But today I did find a 5th Instar Cat in a MW plant that I had covered to use for food.... the little mama that visited me over a month ago, must have left one on this plant and after the fact, I covered it with mesh.
I spotted giant droppings this morning and now this chubby is reunited with one of its siblings.... those are my last two to transform!!!
