Wary Curved-billed Thrasher watching from a tangle of spiny Cholla stems.
Common in desert scrub and abundant.
This WARA came bustling out of some reeds and showed herself while I was watching a Kingfisher fly and fish. It was a first time look for me and my guide both... we were kind of shocked to see it and I was able to get some photos after I stopped staring... since then I have seen two more at the AWR but they tend to hide in the reeds much more than the moorhens and coots...
Also, the obligatory but necessary "shout-out" to the great folks at the Jordan Royal Society for the Conservation for Nature (RSCN) and especially the AWR staff...
A very wary Osprey finally “threw caution to the wind” and took a bath, which included plenty of splashing in between nervously looking around.
This was the first and only time I’ve ever seen this occurrence.

It's way too windy here in Amman for the past two days and a little rainy and kind of chilly... I am itching to get out down to the Jordan River Valley but the driving is not great on the roads I like and I think the wind will limit the birding... I can wait a bit... very nice relaxing Christmas Day here and hopefully get out tomorrow and maybe Saturday as well... fingers crossed...
This Bluethroat was great fun to catch at the end of last month along with my first ever European Robin sighting. It's refreshing to see some color these days... along with the usual desert tans and the winter... kind of drab here right now... I hope the wind dies down a bit... :-)
Black-crowned Night-Herons are stocky birds compared to many of their long-limbed heron relatives. They’re most active at night or at dusk, when you may see their ghostly forms flapping out from daytime roosts to forage in wetlands. In the light of day adults are striking in gray-and-black plumage and long white head plumes. These social birds breed in colonies of stick nests usually built over water. They live in fresh, salt, and brackish wetlands and are the most widespread heron in the world.

Cute critters. He looked kind of bashful in this pose as he watched me approach for a photo. I didn't get too close.
I'll catch up with you all later. Have a good Saturday!
So...yesterday a friend and I was sitting out in the open across from a Red Cardinal Patch of flowers [on the other side of the swamp] waiting for Hummingbirds. Since it was our first attempt this year, I knew they would be cautious. This one kept an eye on us the whole time.
This wary male hairy woodpecker was working his way up through the broken bark on a quaking aspen tree here in hopes of finding overwintering insects hiding beneath the cracks.
While its mate was sitting patiently on the nest, this one was keeping a close eye on anyone who walked past, but was surprisingly tolerant, with barely a noise and no aggression. I think they are getting used to our village residents. Even the magpies don't swoop us now!
Happy Wing Wednesday!

Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis)
The Hooded Plover is an endangered species with much work being done to help numbers build.
This male Red Rump Parrot was keeping a very wary eye on the sky. Probably on the lookout for the Whistling kites which were in big numbers up and down the Murray River around Mannum in South Australia.
Happy Gorgeous Green Thursday!
It's interesting watching the pecking order in the bird bath. The two caught here share a similar level, happily warding off finches and thornbills, but deferring to robins. The New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae ) on the left is keeping an eye on me, but the White-browed Scrubwren (Sericornis frontalis ) is not confident about entering the water, however the NHH soon took a very quick drink and left the bath to the scrubwren.

the mother of 2 male cubs of nearly 2 year in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Especially the bigger cub was quite skittish and stayed in the forest most of the time so I have no pictures of the family together.
Actually both cubs were already bigger than their mother.

Another photo from the Appaloosa riding contests at the Iowa State Fair- this was the Western Dress completion where the horse maneuvers are done wearing western costume.
They rode too slow for an action shot so I went for a portrait instead!.
Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger.
On Endangered Species Day, I’ll note that Fox Squirrels are not endangered because they adapt readily to human habitats full of Live Oak acorns and bird feeders, both of which are available locally in abundance. Species that cannot cohabit with Homo sapiens are dropping like flies, birds, frogs, fish, and all the other Charismatic (and non-charismatic) Megafauna our laws and international treaties have spent 5 decades failing to protect. While I admire & celebrate the motives and diligence of those who have worked to preserve our wild cousins, I’ll pause to reflect that there are deeper mechanisms at work, as Sir David describes in this 6min video:
Please join me in gratitude and appreciation for the natural world.
Happy Fence Friday! (By restricting wildlife mobility, fences create ecosystem “islands” that support fewer species.)

As this Alaskan Brown Bear enters the Brooks River, it glances in the direction of other bears down-stream, taking care to give them their space.
