The indoor rollercoaster Vogelrok and the buffet restaurant Kashba are part of the World of Sindbad which is part of Reizenrijk.

Themed areas within a one of the five Kingdoms in the Efteling is the new way of creating the World of the Efteling.

De Efteling

The Efteling is a fantasy-themed amusement park in Kaatsheuvel in the Netherlands. The attractions are based on elements from ancient myths and legends, fairy tales, fables, and folklore.

The park was opened in 1952. It has since evolved from a nature park with a playground and a Fairytale Forest into a full-sized theme park. It now caters to both children and adults with its cultural, romantic, and nostalgic themes, in addition to its wide array of amusement rides.

It is the largest theme park in the Netherlands and one of the oldest theme parks in the world. It is twice as large as the original Disneyland park in California and antedates it by three years. Annually, the park has over 5 million visitors.

Vogelrok 20/05/2023 15h01

The boarding station at the enclosed rollercoaster Vogelrok.

Vogelrok

The name of the ride, Vogel Rok, refers to the adventure of Sinbad and the Bird Roc from the 1001 Arabian Nights; the extensive theming covers, beside the ride, the building and the queue line. The building has as a frontage a giant colorful Roc, the largest bird in Europe, according to the Guinness Book of Records. In the opening year there weren’t a lot of effects in the ride, and the link between the story and the ride wasn’t very clear. Since then a Serpent’s mouth has been added at the end of the ride, which lights up as the train goes through it. There used to be a laser-light-show at the queue, but that has been removed. This was done because the lights were too low, and people would look at them, thereby damaging their eyes. In 2007, more themed decorations were added.

Lasers project over the train as it climbs the lift-hill and seen to the left are four Rocs flying off. In a strong curve down leftwards the train dives towards the ground and several more curves bring the train through a tunnel of lasers.

The train then falls into a helix and goes through a Serpent’s mouth, which lights up as the train passes through it. The last curve is decorated with fiber optic lights, portraying the diamond treasure.

Apparent wind-effects stimulate the ride-experience.

The ride has an onboard sound system with a synchronized soundtrack written by composer Ruud Bos, who also wrote the musical themes for Droomvlucht, Fata Morgana and Villa Volta.

Warme Winter Weide 08/12/2020 17h25

The Warme Winter Weide as seen from above. From the Pagode to be exact.

Winter Efteling 2020/2021

The Warme Winter Weide (Meadow) is the big novelty of the Winter Efteling 2020-2021. Due to the corona measures, the large tent on Speelweide had to make way this year for a field with campfires, snow-covered Christmas trees and stalls with food, drinks and souvenirs.

The Efteling winter season started 19/11/2020. Although the Warme Winter Meadow was born out of necessity - the old Ice Palace was not corona proof - the public is enthusiastic about the change. For the Warme Winter Meadow, Efteling has combined several existing elements. In the middle of the oval-shaped meadow there is a podium with two large campfires on either side. The field is surrounded by covered terraces, pine trees and wooden huts with winter delicacies.

We work with a fixed walking route and a separate entrance and exit. Room has been made for toilet trucks at the edge of the field. During busy periods, the Warme Winter Meadow can be temporarily closed to ensure that keeping a meter and a half distance remains possible.

Efteling miniatures are sold at one of the stalls. An Efteling Christmas village has also been built. [ Loopings 11/2020 ]

Fata Morgana 05/12/2022 13h08

The huge entrance hall of Fata Morgana where you are guided through a gallery to the entry point on the turntable. A gallery, decorated with donkey arches through which the entire hall can be seen, follows the walls of this entrance hall to go halfway through the room towards the rotary table. Past the control room for staff, you have to go down a flight of stairs to get to the turntable, after which you can get into one of the fourteen red sloops. No much of storytelling here, in the 1980's when Fata Morgana opened not very common.

Fata Morgana

Fata Morgana, the forbidden city, also known as 1001 Arabian Nights (or "1001 nachten" in Dutch) is a dark ride in amusement park Efteling in the Netherlands. It was designed by Ton van de Ven and Jan Verhoeven and opened in 1986.

Fata Morgana is a dark ride/tow boat ride that was opened in 1986. The attraction is based on the 1001 Arabian Nights. The ride is populated by 140 animatronics. Fata Morgana is set inside a large building with turquoise and gold domes on the roof. A large tower serves as the entrance to the ride. There is a large square outside the ride with palm trees, fountains and flames. The ride's gift shop De Bazaar, and a kiosk, Oase, are located nearby to the ride.

The facade of the ride is a huge domed building painted gold and turquoise. Guests enter through a large tower that serves as the entrance to the ride. They then wait on raised platforms above a round canal with a turntable in the middle. Guests are taken down the stairs and onto the turntable, before boarding 16 passenger boats. There is never more than one boat in each scene, except for the first Jungle scene where one can see the back of a boat turning into the Poor District.

The attraction is considered to be the link between the old fairy-tale style of Anton Pieck and the newer, more intensive rides.

The opening was planned for 1984, but in order to give more time for the designing team it was postponed to 1986. The original name Fata Medina was changed to Fata Morgana to avoid confusion with the Islamic holy city, though it is more likely that it was a reference to the first completed part of the ride, the Medina quarter- the poor district and central marketplace.

The decorative art was bought in the Moroccan city of Marrakech and the animatronics were dressed by Belgian designer Jeanine Lambrechts.

Underwater rotating disks regulate the transport system provided by the Swiss manafucturer Intamin. The whole transport system was developed by Intamin (as a Tow boat ride). Total cost, converted from Guilders: €7 million.

The music for Fata Morgana was composed by composer Ruud Bos, who also wrote the musical themes for Dreamflight,Vogelrok and Villa Volta.

Naturally he chose a Harem style as the base theme for the music. More specifically, the beginning of the ride is linked by orchestral music to the dreamy, mideastern music with flutes and violins of the market, the first setting of the attraction. The music gets darker when the ride passes the prison part. A slow melody sets in upon entering the harbor but is extended with instruments like violins, gongs and a percussion. The musical climax comes when the ride ends in the final scene of the throneroom.

After 33 years, the Monsieur Cannibale attraction in the Efteling will have a different theme and was announced in June 2021. And this, together with the adjacent Avonturen Doolhof, which will be replaced by a water playground, which will be called Archipel.

A total investment of 2.8 million euros is involved.

At Monsieur Cannibale, the cooking pots are replaced by trade boats from merchant Sindbad de Zeeman. "A whirlwind has sprung out at sea and anyone who sets foot on board is embarking on a dizzying adventure until the storm subsides," the description reads.

The area around the attractions, located in the Reizenrijk park part, will be completely redesigned. This creates two separate squares: a 1001 Nacht square with Vogel Rok, Sirocco and Archipel and a square with the Carnival Festival and souvenir shop Jokies Wereld. The new part will be called World of Sindbad. Monsieur Cannibale's entrance and queue will be moved.

Vogelrok 03/06/2021 17h07

After a lockdown which started on 15/12/2020 and ended on 18/05/2021 (22 weeks). In the first place all indoor attractions had to remain closed. Vogelrok, Droomvlucht, Symbolica, Fata Morgana, Villa Volta, Indische Waterlelies and Chinese Nachtegaal were not accessible. This means the square in front of Vogelrok was empty on the 3rd of June. From 05/06/2021 all indoor rides and attractions were allowed to open so De Efteling had much more capacity again. Hopefully covid-19 is fading out now.

Fata Morgana 11/02/2022 12h29

The porch of the prison is the sixth scene in Fata Morgana. A band plays while guards watch a dancer; a confused man is after the boat.

When the boat has sailed just under the Falling Gate and the gates swing open, the visitor enters a dark barracks that is attached to a rock wall. To the left is a high window with flickering light behind it. Straight ahead, the visitor looks straight into the eyes of a confused looking and cross-eyed gunman, who stands some ten meters high on the cliff face and starts yelling directly at the boat and firing at it - it's what uncontrollably and the bullets do splash the water on either side of the boat. Beside him, a lantern rocks in the wind.

On the quay to the right is a veiled belly dancer who entertains the seven watching guards with her dancing skills. A three-piece band provides the accompanying music. One guard gets up and screams when he sees the boat passing by.

The sniper nervously shouts his last Arabic texts, but the boat passes him, turning left into Prison.

Kashba 05/04/2023 10h22

A lot of work is being done in De Efteling at the moment. One of the projects that has just been completed is the former Panorama restaurant, which is operated by La Place and is fully included in Reizenrijk as part of De Wereld van Sindbad.

The entrance located next to Vogelrok.

Kashba

The former Panorama self-service was a self-service restaurant in the Panorama restaurant complex in the Reizenrijk. Until 2016 it was called De Globetrotter. Since June 2022, it has been operated by caterer Vermaat with its La Place concept. It closed on January 9, 2023 when the Panorama complex was converted into the Kashba restaurant.

In the spring of 2023, the Panorama complex was thematically added to the World of Sindbad. The strict separation between the separate service and self-service restaurants was dropped and one large new restaurant was created: Kashba, with a separate semi-serviced section with QR codes inside. This whole is still operated under the La Place formula, but with the addition of some Middle Eastern dishes.

Date of opening of Kashba was 1 April 2023.

Anton Pieckplein

Anton Pieckplein is an Old Dutch village square located in the northeast corner of Marerijk, between restaurant Het Witte Paard and the Reizenrijk. Around the square are Pieck buildings with catering outlets and shops. On the square we find all kinds of fairground mills, two Holle Bolle Gijzen, the Efteling Museum and some suppliers of surprise eggs.

The square is named after founder Anton Pieck.

Fata Morgana 08/12/2020 14h21

The caliph in the first scene points the way to the rest of the dark ride.

The Jungle is both the first scene (section 1) and the last scene (section 14) in Fata Morgana. An exuberance green jungle with calm music accompanies the transition of visitors from or back to the real world.

After sailing from the boarding hall under a neutral beige curtain, the boat sails into the Jungle. Surrounded by various plants and palm trees you sail a bend. To the left, an Eastern palace can be seen in the distance, which disappears again as if it were a mirage. After a few meters, snakes hang at the top of the trees, hissing and teeming over the branches. In a cliff face, a Caliph appears, brandishing his staff. With a mysterious sound and flashes of light, he opens the large doors that form the gate of a "Forbidden City". In that city we first arrive in the Poor Quarter.

The Winter Efteling in full swing in front of the enclosed roller coaster Vogelrok (in English Bird Rok).

Winter Efteling

Winter Efteling is the opening of the Efteling in the winter season, nowadays from November to February. The event has been brought since the first edition as a distinctly different experience than the Efteling offers during the rest of the year, with all kinds of extras in the form of decorations, special live entertainment and winter catering and attractions. The park also has different opening hours than during the high season.

The Winter Efteling has been organized since 1999. After three trial editions, it was decided in 2002 to put the event permanently on the calendar. Until 2010, the park was still closed between the summer season and the Winter Efteling, nowadays the Efteling is open every day of the year and there is therefore no interruption between summer and winter season.

The Market Scene is the third and longest scene in Fata Morgana and is also called souk. The Market Scene actually consists of two linked sub-scenes, separated by a gate (internally these two parts are referred to as sections 3 and 3a). You sail through a lively market where the most diverse commodities are offered and traded.

The scene continues smoothly from the Poor District. It shows the livelier and brighter part of the Forbidden City. On the left is a camel in a gallery and a package is being hoisted up.

The scene features 27 moving human animatronics and 4 animal animatronics.

At the last moment in this scene, a woman from her balcony empties a pitcher of water right in front of the boat. A house has been built across the fairway, in which a large arch gate leaves the navigation free. The boat then sails to the second part of the third scene.

It seems that De Efteling will give the base of the festival site a permanent foundation. Pavement and masts for equipment, lighting and flags.

Seen from below

In the Summer of 2023 Carnival Festival characters Jokie and Jet get their own summer meadow in Efteling during the high season. The amusement park is working on a summer festival site on the Speelweide, with entertainment, games, catering and a few DIY attractions.

The temporary addition is designed as a beach with colorful umbrellas, seating areas, beach huts and shade cloths. A hot air balloon will be placed in the heart of the area, known from the stories of Jokie and Jet. In addition, two large circles are visible, where a sandbox and a bouncy castle will be realized.

The Speelweide in the Reizenrijk park section is increasingly being used for temporary initiatives. During the summer season of 2022, Efteling Wonderland could still be found on the site, on the occasion of the theme park's seventieth anniversary. In winter, the area transforms into the Warm Winter Meadow. Only part of the field is used for the new Jokie and Jet concept.

Jokie has been the host of the cheerful dark ride Carnival Festival since 1984. Since 2012, the little jester has been accompanied by the purple bird Jet. Over the past decade, Efteling has launched shows, souvenirs and an animated series based around the children's brand. This makes Jokie and Jet among the most prominent Efteling figures in and outside the park.

Fata Morgana 08/12/2020 14h24

Prison is the seventh scene in Fata Morgana. In this lurid scene, prisoners are left to fend for themselves or are forced to perform heavy forced labor.

The scene follows directly on the front porch of the prison. We enter a cave vault. On the right we find an old jailer with a large vulture on his back in an inlet in the rocky outcrop. He looks towards the boat, mumbles a little and shakes his bunch of keys.

Fata Morgana 08/03/2022 15h16

The 10th scene of Fata Morgana is the throne room of the pasha.

A large red velvet curtain opens to this scene, behind which is the throne room of the Pasha. To the right is a large group of smartly dressed Arabs, who are busy talking to each other, enjoying the drinks and snacks. A few servants with trays stand and walk between the guests. A little further on, on an elevation surrounded by stairs, is the Pasha. His bodyguards and servants are standing around him, and five belly dancers are dancing in front. The Pasha is commanding his ministry with many hand gestures and with a loud voice in unintelligible gibberish.

Fata Morgana 08/12/2020 14h22

The Market Scene is the third and longest scene in Fata Morgana and is also called souk. The Market Scene actually consists of two linked sub-scenes, separated by a gate (internally these two parts are referred to as sections 3 and 3a). You sail through a lively market where the most diverse commodities are offered and traded.

The scene continues smoothly from the Poor District. It shows the livelier and brighter part of the Forbidden City. On the left is a camel in a gallery and a package is being hoisted up.

The scene features 27 moving human animatronics and 4 animal animatronics.

Reizenrijk 31/08/2021 13h36

The center of Reizenrijk in the last week of the Summer holidays of the year 2021. The second year in row with covid as the main challenge in the world. A difficult time for De Efteling, but despite all the measures and restrictions, De Efteling is still popular.

Reizenrijk

Reizenrijk is one of the five areas of the Efteling Park. It is located in the northeast and is indicated on maps and signposts by the color yellow. From 1987 to 1999 this part of the park was called Noorderpark.

The name Reizenrijk seems mainly based on the presence of Carnival Festival. Although many other attractions have an exotic theme or have a means of transport, the name could just as well have referred to the offer in Anderrijk.

Until the end of the seventies, many visitors entered the park through the North Entrance in the Reizenrijk. Via the Double Laan one could easily go towards the 'busyness' in the Marerijk, while one could enjoy a good meal here in the characteristic white building of the Café-Restaurant with a view over the large Ornamental pond. With the new attractions springing up like mushrooms in the early 1980s, rustic attractions opened in this part of the park that could blend into the ambiance of the Ornamental Pond, while the merry Carnival Festival opened in the square. This attraction very emphatically left its mark on this remote corner. The range of children's attractions increased from 1988, until ten years later Vogel Rok, the most recent addition, brought more balance to the range of Reizenrijk.

Attractions:

- Carnaval Festival

- Vogel Rok

- Kleuterhof

- Gondoletta

- Pagode

- Wensbron

- Monsieur Cannibale (closed in September 2021)

- Kinder Doolhof (closed in September 2021)

Vogelrok 08/11/2018 13h37

The Winter edition of the entrance of Vogelrok (Bird Rock in English), the enclosed roller coaster in De Efteling. The 2018 edition.

Vogelrokplein 08/11/2018 13h36

The Winter Efteling has not been officially started but this square is ready for this Winter event. The dark roller coasterVogelrok is closed due to maintenance works for a few weeks but will be open during the Winter Efteling with some upgrades and new sound and light effects.

Kinderspoor | Panorama Restaurant 15/02/2019 14h54

One of my favorite attractions in de Efteling when I was a kid was this children's railway Kinderspoor, in Dutch popular called Traptreintjes (pedal trains). In the background the restaurant Panaorama with the roof of the indoor roller coaster Vogelrok.

Kinderspoor

The Kinderspoor, also called the Traptreintjes, is an attraction in Ruigrijk in which children up to 12 years old, two seated in a small metal vehicle in the form of a locomotive with two pairs of pedals, have to move on their own on a course through a landscape. with farms, fields and a mill.

The attraction has a long history, has been modified several times and has even changed location. The first version, officially dating from 1954, was a design by Anton Pieck. Until 1999, the trains on the railway rattled behind the Playground (later the Lavenlaar) in a leafy spot in a remote corner of Marerijk. The attraction, which proved to be a huge success from the very first day, was the first of the Efteling to make a ride. Since 2000 the Traptreintjes have been driving their laps in a Zaanse Schans landscape, designed by Ton van de Ven, on the banks of the Siervijver.

Carnaval Festival 10/04/2019 15h03

Carnaval Festival was the first darkride in De Efteling before Fata Morgana, Droomvlucht and Symbolica. The ride was closed early 2019 for major renovations and some scenes will be changed during as a subproject in a much larger technical maintenance plan. In January 2019 a redesign of the two most controversial scenes was announced, in which the Efteling cited the spirit of the times as the main driver behind the technical design adjustments: "Of course our world view has changed over the past 35 years and you will see that later in the Carnival Festival, so the attraction can last ten years again ".

Carnaval Festival

Carnival Festival is a darkride in Reizenrijk. The attraction is a ride in a cart that, via the Omnimover system, transports visitors through the building, where cheerful scenes of different cultures of the world are portrayed through music, sets and around 275 dolls.

The spiritual father of the Carnival Festival is Joop Geesink, who devised and designed the attraction just before his death. The attraction, referred to in a 1984 advertisement by the Efteling as 'a life-size viewing box', is primarily nationally known for its music. The recognizable tune was created by Toon Hermans. Ruud Bos searched for the harmonies and notes and processed the main melody into various arrangements. Bos thus had his first collaboration with Efteling and remained the house composer of the park in the following fourteen years. Carnival Festival is the first time the park does not use existing music, but has it composed specially.

The ride is split into about twenty scenes, in which fifteen countries are portrayed through typical, clichéd features and changes in the arrangements of the music.

The boarding carousel of the dark ride Fata Morgana. It is said that Fata Morgana will be completely renovated within a few years. So I have already started taking pictures of things that I think will change. That in my opinion is certainly the queue that dates back to 1986 and at that time it was not really common to immerse the riders in storytelling. Except for the music, which was always wonderfully present.

Wereld van Sindbad

The World of Sindbad is the theme area in the Travel Kingdom to which the attractions Vogel Rok, Sirocco and Archipel, and restaurant Kashba belong. The World of Sindbad is located around the Travel Kingdom Square in the northeastern corner of the Efteling. On the square itself, planting and other street furniture indicate which part belongs to Carnaval Festival and which to Sindbad. The largest attraction that belongs to the world is Vogel Rok. The other attraction is Sirocco and the water playground Archilep. The restaurant Kashba was added last.

The Nine Plein Festijn (in 2012 and 2013 Seven Plein Festijn) is the event on the Saturday nights in July and August and consequently the follow-up to the Efteling Summer evenings. During the first editions, the park was open until midnight, but since 2017 it is early until 23:00. However, the festival is also taking place every Friday in July and August.

Reizenrijk

Reizenrijk is one of the five areas of the Efteling park. It is located in the northeast and is indicated on maps and signposts with the color yellow. From 1987 to 1999 this park part was called Noorderpark.

Until the end of the seventies, many visitors entered the park via the North Entrance in the Reizenrijk. Via the Dubbele Laan, one could easily head towards the 'bustle' in the Marerijk, while here one could eat well in the characteristic white building of the Café-Restaurant with a view over the large Ornamental Pond. When new attractions sprang up like mushrooms in the early eighties, rustic attractions opened in this part of the park that could blend in with the ambiance of the Ornamental Pond, while the cheerful Carnival Festival was held on the square. This attraction very clearly left its mark on this remote area. The range of children's attractions increased from 1988, until ten years later Vogel Rok, as the most recent addition, brought more balance to what Reizenrijk has to offer.
