Sisymbrium irio L.; London rocket
A delightful and tasty plant. London Rocket Mustard is a naturalized plant in the Sonoran Desert. It spreads freely and blooms in my desert garden in Central Tucson at about the same time as in Sabino Canyon, northeast of Tucson, Arizona.
I should trim these seed strings off to see if new flowers will come along...

Jane Haddad's recipe for a London Rocket Smoothie sounds wonderful. I will try it today.

Jane Haddad's Recipe
"My London Rocket green smoothie contains wild greens (London Rocket is an edible winter weed) and is a simple, savory cocktail. Before you go picking wild greens, get educated so you don't poison yourself..."
See Jane's page for links to wild greens experts.
"London Rocket is a common wild green like lambsquarters and dandelion."
My Secret Ingredient
"So, I decided to go with a savory smoothie, and we're not gonna use a whole bunch of it, because it is strong, so I took some of the London Rocket leaves off of the stem and I'm using a small handful. Add this small handful of the London Rocket to your blender. Now for my special ingredient. A sprig of fresh rosemary. It's so intoxicating. It has such an aromatic, perfume-y smell to it. I thought it might be just the right thing to accent the mustardy like London Rocket. We're gonna find out today. So, I'm adding one sprig and I took the little leaves of the rosemary off of the stem, so you see you have just a little bit like this. Smells so wonderful. The thought of eating it and getting into new greens for my green smoothies is very exciting."
"We must introduce new greens into our green smoothie rotation. It keeps our appetite for green smoothies alive, and it's good for our nutrition. And rosemary is anti-inflammatory. Then I'm going to use 3 Roma tomatoes, also known as plum tomatoes. Look at that... the tomatoes have a lot of juice in them, so I'm not going to add any water to this. I want to make it like a thick cocktail. Add all 3 tomatoes to the Vitamix."
"Here's what you've got: small handful of the London Rocket, the leaves from the one sprig of rosemary, and 3 plum tomatoes. Plum tomatoes are kind of meaty, too, so that's why I chose them. Blend it up. It should only take 20-30 seconds. So excited to have a new smoothie for myself and for you. This is a savory, low glycemic, London Rocket cocktail."
Something New
"I think I've come up with something new here. The London Rocket and the Rosemary. Wow... ... very mild. Oh, and a word of caution about going out and picking your own edibile weeds. I did not pick this myself. Morgan got it direct from the farmer at the orchard and then she gave me some. I am not an edibile wild weed expert. I don't even trust myself to go out there, other than dandelion, and know what I'm doing."
"So, get your education before you go and pick a weed and decide to eat it, because there are plenty of poisonous weeds out there. This is a winner. This is a success. I get so excited when something I'm thinking about in my head actually comes out in the blender and then I can taste it and truly enjoy it."
It does sound delicious!

Huh??? Synecdoche - where a part can be understood to represent a whole. This is the spiral binding of my Vitamix cookbook. This shot was harder than it looks!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I haven't made pizza in ages, so I tried my hand using Vitamix. Does a good job, but I'll stick with my hands-on recipe. The crust is very lght and tasty. Toppings: tomato sauce, shredded Parmagiano, olives, mushrooms, tuna, basil. I'll definitely make it again. Next time a tad rounder.

Oreo Ice Cream
My favorite flavor of homemade ice cream to make so far is Oreo. I keep tweaking the recipe and now I think I have it just about perfected. I take just the outer chocolate cookie part of the Oreo and crush up about 2 cups worth of cookies in my Vitamix blender. Mom snags the cream filling to use on graham crackers for a treat the next day. I add the crushed Oreo powder to the ice cream base after about 20 minutes in the ice cream maker. After putting the ice cream into a container to freeze, I swirl in another cup of crumbled Oreos to get the bigger cookie chunks. Yum!

I saw a tweet recently about an espresso smoothie so I decided to try and come up with my own with ingredients I had. I threw in a double shot of espresso, a frozen banana, protein powder, cocoa pwoder, chocolate chips, vanilla, yogurt, milk, chia seeds, maple syrup, almonds and icecubes and this is what came out. It needed a little more sweetness but not bad for a first try. Maybe some dates next time for sweetness and colour. A little treat for Darren to try to beat the summer treat. Just frozen bananas, cherries and a little hemp milk, blended in the VitaMix and topped with Cacao Nibs. Lish!
Turns out this is easy to make with the right blender. It's supposed to keep a week in the fridge, but I reckon it'll all be eaten before then

Remember when you were a kid and you broke up your Saltines in your tomato soup?
This one tastes just like that but much better.
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup chopped yellow onion (about 1 medium)
1 red bell red, minced
2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons AP flour
12 sun dried tomatoes
2 cups vegetable broth
1/2 cup cashew milk
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1 wheel Miyoko's Kitchen Garlic Sun Dried Tomato "cheese"
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
In a saute pan heat the oil and cook the onions and bell peppers until soft. Add the garlic at the end and then transfer to process (Vitamix). Add the rest of the ingredients except for the AP flour. Process. Pour into a sauce pot and heat to a boil. Thicken by adding the AP flour with 2tbsp broth, mix and add back to the pot. Serves 4 as an appetizer or 2 as main course. Garnish with red pepper flakes.
Alkalinity smoothie with kale and parsley from the garden... thanks to Diana @ Raw Foods Made Simple for her super yummy smoothie recipes. So good! The basis of this one is kale, parsley, apples, water, hemp seeds, dates and lime juice.

Here is the RANDOM FACT ingredient quiz. I know many have been tagged already, and I hate leaving people out on these things - so if you read this and haven't been tagged (and desire to be), consider yourself tagged. :)
Once you have completed the questions, upload your SP and copy and paste the info below in your description section (change to your answers), then tag a handful of contacts you think might enjoy!
Wrote most of this last night at 3am ...
Six names you go by
1. Annie
2. Annabelle
3. Ann (from those who knew me when I was 13 and went through the "I'm too mature for the name Annie" phase) - I hate being called Ann now though
4. Mommy
5. Mama (heard either when somebody is tired, hurt or really trying hard to convince me of something)
6. Ma'am ... yes, I'm officially old. I'm called ma'am all over the place now. Depressing.
Three things you are wearing right now
1. My wedding ring
2. Tank top and underwear
3. Burt's Bees lip balm
(I'm in bed, lol)
Four things you want very badly at this moment
1. To have a healthy, happy baby girl in July. And to be well enough to be the kind of mommy I want to be to both my girls.
2. For a doctor or researcher to find a cure for POTS so I can have my life back - or an unheard of remission, thank you very much.
3. Sleep (I only work and do "computing" at night after my little girl is sleeping soundly next to me ... which means I get way too little sleep)
4. A full frame camera (using a little D300 now) ... preferably a D700 upgrade, perhaps a D700s or D900? Something with video and maybe a higher resolution. Do you hear me Nikon?? I'm ready now!
Two things you did last night
1. Went to ballet with my little girl.
2. After Miss A fell asleep, I worked on my new site and shoppe until 3am despite feeling like pond scum.
Last two people you talked to on the phone
1. My dad
2. My midwife
Two things you are going to do tomorrow
1. I hope to take my little girl to ride our horse and see the new baby ducks at the barn. Of course, this one may be replaced with "stay in bed all day with the occasional crawl to the bathroom" if my illness decides to be a jerk to me again. Fingers and toes crossed.
2. Hopefully, sleep in if my husband is kind enough to let that happen (and the dogs don't wake me up ... once I'm even slightly awake in the morning I can *never* fall back asleep). ETA: Did not happen. Didn't sleep until almost 4am - woken up at 7am. :( Then husband decided to take a bath so HE could relax early this morning and left the four year old little girl alarm clock to work her charms on me until I surrendered and got up. How fair is that?
Three favorite drinks
1. Very cold water - must be COLD, cannot tolerate warm water! I LOVE water ... and actually *have* to drink it w/ my condition, so it's a good thing. I have a 1.5 liter Klean Kanteen with me at all times and drink at least 4 liters of water a day, usually more.
2. Green smoothies in my VitaMix
3. Vanilla Soy Steamers
THE RANDOM FACT INGREDIENT
We just heard a loud noise outside and upon investigating I found there was a giant goose on our neighbor's roof, honking wildly at our dogs.

Not there yet; but getting closer to discovering what makes this image interest me so much.
The Plaza de España is _not_ centuries old, unlike other tourist attractions in this chock-full-of-UNESCO-world-heritage-sites country. Seville built it while preparing for the 1929 Ibero-American festival. The 'provincial alcoves' shown offer ceramic tile tributes to each of Spain's provinces.
(The Castellón province is on the east coast south of Barcelona. The container ship ferrying my earthly belongings from the U.S. hit port out that-a-way, so my Vitamix and garlic press may have toured Castellón, but I haven't. I'll have to ask their impressions the next time I chat up my kitchen appliances.)
Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao all go by the same moniker in-country as out, but the city celebrated in this photo set is 'Sevilla' to Spaniards and 'Seville' to English speakers. I don't know why. I'm far too embarrassed by my inevitable grammar goofs to write captions in español, so 'Seville' it shall be here.
After seeing my friend Mona's Vitamix up close during our smoothie making charity event at the office, I couldn't stop thinking about replacing our Ninja with a Vitamix. So...we went to Crate & Barrel and picked one up today! It was *gulp* pricey, but I think it will be worth it. This one fits nicely under our cabinets so I can keep it out and use it often, maybe get healthier and lose a little weight again!
Stopped by my local gourmet food store (the retail arm of Sid Wainer & Sons, who provides produce and other goods for restaurants throughout the northeastern US) this past weekend. I was only looking for some King Trumpet mushrooms, but I have a hard time walking out of there without at least one impulse buy, and this time it ended up being a couple of small "Honeybaby" butternut squash, and a package of dried pomegranate seeds.
This is the end result: a butternut squash soup with a healthy dose of harissa paste to add some heat to the sweetness of the squash, topped with lemon-tahini sauce, roasted pumpkinseed oil, cilantro, mint, sumac, toasted pumpkin seeds, and dried pomegranate seeds. Very tasty, warming fall dish that is about as far from "pumpkin spice" as you can get while having spices mixed in to a very pumpkin-like squash.

Ingredients
for the soup
2 Honeybaby butternut squash (or a larger butternut squash, about 2 lbs.)
1 large red onion, diced
5 cloves of garlic, chopped
2" knob of ginger, grated
1 tsp. cumin seed
1 tsp. coriander seed
2 tbl. harissa paste
3/4 c. Greek yogurt
salt
pepper
1-2 c. vegetable stock
olive oil
toppings
3 tbl. tahini paste
juice of 1/2 lemon
water
roasted pumpkinseed oil
cilantro leaves
mint leaves (chiffonade cut)
toasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
dried pomegranate seeds
ground sumac
Directions
Halve the squash, scoop out the seeds (save them to roast if you like), rub lightly with olive oil, salt lightly, and roast skin-side down in a 400°F oven until soft. Turn over and roast a bit longer to get some color on the cut side.
While the squash is roasting, sauté the onion, cumkn, and coriander in a little olive oil over medium heat until the onion softens and the spices are fragrant. Add the garlic and ginger and cook briefly. Deglaze the pan with about 1/2 c of vegetable stock.
Scoop out the squash flesh. Put it and the sautéed ingredients into a blender (I used a Vitamix for this, but any reasonable quality blender should work.) Add the harissa paste, a tablespoon or so of olive oil, and the Greek yogurt and purée until smooth, adding vegetable stock to get your desired consistency. I prefer this on the thick side, but thin enough to be ladle-able. Add salt and pepper to taste.
To make the lemon-tahini sauce, combine the tahini paste and lemon juice and whisk well, adding enough warm water to thin the mixture out to a consistency somewhere between sour cream and heavy cream.
Serve hot, with lemon-tahini sauce and pumpkinseed oil drizzled on top, sprinkled with sumac, and topped with the other herbs and seeds.
Makes 3-4 good sized portions.
To make our favorite nut butter. Getting it out is a bit glucky, but it takes less than 5 minutes all told, including clean-up -- Vitamix cleans itself.
This is part of an old VitaMix juicer. I’ve wanted one since the 70’s, and my friend Victor just gave me his (which he bought at a thrift store last year).
The Flickr Lounge-What's Bugging Me This Season
I love using my Vita-mix Blender. I enjoy making salad dressings for our salads in the summer but its so hard to clean. I'd love it if the bottom blade would come out!
For my daughter's class valentines, I used the Paper Smooches Vegtastic, Fruitastic, and Woofers and Tweeters stamps, and the Fruitastic Icons, Vegtastic Icons, and Scalloped Circles dies. For details, please see my blog at: redballooncards.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-vitamix-would-have....
You saw the red jacket I bought myself for Christmas.......and this is my other gift.... a juicer I ordered online and it arrived two days ago.
I have never owned a juicer before. I have a blender [ VitaMix] that makes green smoothies...but they taste so thick and goopy....so I am going to try juicing instead.
I will be going on a 15 day jucing fast......consisting of veggies blended w/fruit. I'm getting a jump on the new year and will start my fast on Monday-the day after Christmas. I will be posting about my fast periodically so stay tuned.
Update: 12/ 31/ 12
Well, I used my juicer the first week or so in January and then got really sick. So, i quit juicing and went back to unhealthy eating. I didn't lose any weight in 2012, in fact, I think I gained five pounds more.
1 (14-ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes with their juices
1 medium red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and roughly chopped
½ medium red onion, peeled and roughly chopped
4 garlic cloves, peeled
1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
2 red habanero chile, stemmed
Purée until smooth. Heat 2 tbsps of canola oil in a medium saucepan. Add the purée and bring to a simmer. Cover with a lid and simmer on medium heat for 19 minutes.
You-Know-Who makes all our nut butters and a lot of our milk comes from cashews, vanilla and dates. We're like two authentic pioneer men — with a Vitamix. The specks in there are pumpkin seeds (they add flavor and help with moisture); there are also peanuts.
Apples, walnuts, sunflower seeds with avocado, dried cranberries and chickpeas...dressed in a mayo tahini and topped with sprouts.
Here is the dressing recipe:
1/2 cup vegan mayo
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon tahini
Salt, pepper
Whisk and pour:)
(I used my Vitamix)
actually, it's a watermelon smoothie. had some gottausetoday watermelon and decided to make a smoothie with a little sumpin' sumpin'!
recipe:
cut up watermelon
enough vodka to line bottom of tupperware
got tired of waiting for watermelon to be infused with vodka
get out vitamix
2 cups watermelon
1/2 cup fresh raspberries (used raspberries because had raspberry flavored vodka)
1/2 cup guava nectar
2 cups ice cubes
more vodka
mix for uno momento.
insert straw.
drink.
The kids made Popsicles with kiwis and watermelon, using the Vitamix. Then, there was half of a watermelon sitting there, so my son did what any little boy would do. A lost character from Oz perhaps?
This can be a pudding, gelato or ice cream depending on how long you chill or freeze it. And yes, I used my Vitamix.
1 cup (2) bananas, frozen, sliced
1 cup (12) pitted dates
1 cup coconut cream (skim the creamy top from 1 can coconut milk)
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp vanilla or almond extract
1/4 cup crushed toasted almonds
Blend all but the crushed almonds. Pour into glasses. Fold in the almonds or sprinkle on top. Place in frig or freezer. Serves 4.

le sigh.
so most of you that actually follow me are friends with me on facebook so you already know what happened...
but i'll tell the world and maybe perhaps something good will come of it.
i woke up at 5am sick to my stomach from the 3 strawberry martinis i drank last night. blech. was in the bathroom for 20 or so minutes trying not to puke. i go back to bed... was hot so i got up to turn up the a/c and then went to the window to check on the uhaul.
i wasn't sure if i was drunk still or what was going on but my uhaul door was open and there were people moving my boxes. i was so confused. so i yelled for nikki to come look out the window. i'm like "that's our uhaul right?!?!?" and she's like yeah! so she calls 911 (i called the front desk and they were useless) and we throw clothes on and run downstairs. in retrospect i guess it's good the robbers were gone b/c i'm sure they were armed. i know the south florida ghetto comes out when i'm pissed but really let's be honest here... i'm not a violent person.
so strangely the door to the uhaul was now back down. lock gone. i opened it up.
iMac Computer

JBL monster speakers
JBL iPod docking station
brown plaid juicy purse
low pro camera bag (black)
Canon A2E 35mm camera
$50 in rolled coins
brand new vitamix blender
photoshop CS4 (in box)
other various softwares
shop vac
these are just the things i noticed are missing. i have no idea if they took entire boxes. almost every box was cut into and looked through. my clothes were thrown all over the field in front of the truck along with a bunch of boxes they went through. they even opened my food box of things i didn't want to re-purchase. (not to mention all the expensive tupperware it was in).
thankfully i always keep my camera on me. so i do have my 5D and all my lenses and lights. i have my macbook (but it is IMPOSSIBLE to edit on and i don't have photoshop for it) i have miyagi. i have my nikki (until sunday morning anyway).
so i'm guessing as of now i'm out $10,000 in belongings. and i have no money and no job as of yet. and no way to edit photos so i can't really do shoots for now.
i'm going to check out craigslist every day to see if any of my things show up & contact orlando police. they were super nice and made the situation as pleasant as possible. i honestly believe someone at the hotel (front desk guy perhaps) had something to do with it. b/c why in two minutes were they gone after i called the front desk? they were in the truck at least 20 minutes before we got there. i really wish i would have just called 911 and not the front desk so we could have caught the mother fuckers. UGH.
i'm shocked. i'm sad. i'm irate. i'm not a wealthy person. it's sad that the poor steal from the poor. i'm a starving photographer. obviously not a person that can even afford a moving company. this is NOT a good way to start the next chapter.
i guess there's only one thing to do....
just keep swimming.

also, i realize this is a fluke thing. but photographers, BACK YOUR WORK UP ONLINE. you never know. externals are great but if they get jacked WITH your computer or lost in a fire or flood or whatever... just pay for online storage. it's worth it.
We’ve recently taken a step back from dairy products. Not in a rabid, “must not eat animals” kind of way. Just a more “I feel better when I eat less of this” kind of way.
To replace milk from animals, Kalin has been making almond, hazelnut and brown rice milk for the past couple of weeks.
Nut milks (…pauses while you giggle…) are definitely different than milk from animals. So, I use them differently. This stuff only goes on cereal and not in tea or cocoa. I’ve never viewed dietary changes as sacrifices or giving up something. It’s just experimentation. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. So far, I don’t really miss cow milk. That may change. Or it may not.
The nut milks (…OK, get it out. Are you done? alright, moving on…) in the store are interesting when you read the ingredients. A lot of the almond, soy and coconut milks have titanium dioxide in them.
Titanium dioxide is sunscreen. Seriously. When the Baywatch people cover their noses to protect themselves from the Southern California sun, that’s titanium dioxide.
Especially the creamers. Most of the soy, coconut, and almond creamers have titanium dioxide in them so your coffee looks like it has milk in it. That’s a weird thing to think about.
“Can I get more sunscreen for my coffee?”
Any way, nut milks (…) are good.
