Each summer, students who have successfully completed their first year of studio and course work in the MFA in Visual Studies Program plan and execute a group exhibition showcasing selections of their works produced in the last academic year. The exhibitions are interdisciplinary in nature, fitting the spirit and mission of the program itself. From the students:
"The first year of candidacy in PNCA’s Visual Studies program is intense. Throughout the past year these artists have worked it, gutted it, lived it, killed it, nailed it, and delved into it. We worked through mediums, attitudes, and philosophies, with experimentation as key. That is why we decided to call our show The First Cut Is the Deepest. This group exhibition represents a wide range of disciplines, distinctly different approaches, and a broad variety of motivations and influences." Artwork and Performance by: Tim Stigliano '12. The elevator was pimped out. Disco ball, a string of LED lights and Pitchfork approved music. Heaven!

The class of 2011-12 was honored at the 2012 commencement at Tiffany Center with a ceremony that included an address by Congressman Earl Blumenauer. The progressive representative of Oregon's 3rd Congressional District has worked tirelessly on issues such as transportation, planning, and the environment. He represents, as do the graduates, the limitless possibilities of a potent combination of vision, hard work, and collaboration.
The graduates represented BFA, MFA in Visual Studies and MFA in Applied Craft and Design. PNCA awarded a Doctor of Art Honoris Causa degree to long-time supporter and philanthropist of the College Dorothy Lemelson at this year’s commencement ceremony.
The ceremony took place on May 20, 2012 at the Tiffany Center, Portland, Oregon. The ceremony was followed by receptions at PNCA for both the BFA and MFA in Visual Studies thesis exhibitions.

The MFA in Visual Studies welcomes B. Wurtz as part of the 2011-2012 Graduate Visiting Artist Lecture Series.
New York-based B. Wurtz’s sculptures are made from commonplace objects like shoestrings, buttons, food containers and plastic bags. Pulling them out of their ordinary context and incorporating them in aestheticized designs, Wurtz delicately balances the object’s autonomy and the design to which it has been subjected. Wurtz has exhibited work nationally and internationally for three decades, including exhibitions at Metro Pictures, New York; The Apartment, Vancouver, British Columbia; Museé des Beaux-Arts, Dole, France; and Cabinet, London, United Kingdom. The MFA in Visual Studies welcomes animator Kota Ezawa to PNCA as part of the 2011-2012 Graduate Visiting Artist Lecture Series.
Kota Ezawa meticulously recreates seminal moments in media history, transforming them into vector-based animations reminiscent of classic cartoons. The resulting imagery, an intriguing facsimile of the source material, lies somewhere between Andy Warhol and South Park and is then represented in a number of formats including video, film, slide projection, lightbox, etching and collage. Ezawa forces us to acknowledge the historic and cultural distance between us and the depicted figures that feature so prominently in America’s public memory.
