A tour of the legendary Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) studios in San Francisco, the visual effects company founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas. My friend Jean Bolte has been working at ILM for decades, in a variety of roles, from model maker and puppeteer to digital artist and supervisor.

She showed me some of the original models created for such cinematic milestones as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean and Ghostbusters. The intricate detail behind these fabulous creatures can inspire our own work. We’re both members of Pataphysical Studios, where we create a wide range of animated characters, interactive artworks and imaginary solutions.

Shooting visual effects miniatures for Sebastian's music video.

In order to get a shot of the rocket taking off, zooming past the camera, I had to bottom-mount the camera on a rail. There wasn't enough clearance for cables, so the shutter had to be tripped manually, which made me nervous. But looking at the footage, I don't think it was a problem.

Here is one of many reference stills I took during production for post production of the 2011 'The Block' launch campaign. This provided the 3D team with a quick visual reference of scale for this hammer prop. A computer generated hammer head was added in post production.

Note the shoe covers - always a good idea to have these on if you're working on a painted greenscreen floor

The show 'The Block' became Australia's highest rating show of the year during it's final episode with over 3 million viewers resulting in an audience share of 42.2%. Visual Effects Supervising and Art Directing the launch campaign was an enormously challenging task and the largest VFX job Channel Nine's VFX/Design department had undertaken at that time. Since then we have upped the ante once more.
