I suppose it's appropriate for a fishmarket to be wet! And wet it was last night, the Vismarkt of Groningen. In the distance the Korenbeurs, de former grain exchange now a giant grocery store, dating from 1862-65. Behind it rises the formidable Der Aa-kerk which was built around 1200. More or less behind Olymp's back so you can't see it on this photo is Groningen's iconic Martinikerk, also a medieval construction.
Het Steen, the oldest preserved building in Antwerp, was built between 1200 and 1225 as the gatehouse of the Antwerp fortress. Within the castle there were important institutions such as the Vierschaar (the former court on the corner of the Mattenstraat), the Sint-Walburgiskerk (also known as the castle church), the Bezaanhuis, the Reuzenhuis, the refuge of the Benedictine abbey of Affligem, which also served as a presbytery of the castle church (the last three in the Mattenstraat), the Steen, the Werf and just outside the castle the Vismarkt. Around 1520, at the time of Charles V, the gatehouse of the castle was thoroughly renovated and from then on it was called 's-Heeren Steen. In 1549, Charles V donated the building to the city, which owned it until 1828.
Het Steen, het oudste bewaarde gebouw van Antwerpen, werd gebouwd tussen 1200 en 1225 als poortgebouw van de Antwerpse burcht. Binnen de burcht bevonden zich belangrijke instellingen zoals de Vierschaar (de voormalige rechtbank op de hoek van de Mattenstraat), de Sint-Walburgiskerk (ook bekend als burchtkerk), het Bezaanhuis, het Reuzenhuis, de refuge van de Benedictijnerabdij van Affligem die ook als pastorij van de burchtkerk fungeerde (de laatste drie in de Mattenstraat), het Steen, de Werf en juist buiten de burcht de Vismarkt. Rond 1520, ten tijde van Karel V, werd het poortgebouw van de burcht grondig verbouwd en noemde men het voortaan 's-Heeren Steen. In 1549 schonk Karel V het gebouw aan de stad, die het tot 1828 in eigendom had.

Das Erfurter Rathaus steht am Fischmarkt.
"Die Ursprünge des Hauses reichen bis in das 11. Jahrhundert zurück.
Das 1275 erstmals erwähnte Rathaus war politisches Herzstück der kommunalen Selbstverwaltung der Mittelaltermetropole vom 13. bis 17. Jahrhundert.
Bis 1706 erreichte der Gebäudekomplex die Ausmaße des heutigen Hauptgebäudes. Im Jahr1830 wurde damit begonnen das gotische Rathaus teilweise abzureißen."
Das Hauptgebäude, wie es indem Foto zusehen ist, wurde in den 1870er Jahren in neugotischem Stil erbaut.

The Erfurt town hall is located at the fish market.
"The origins of the house go back to the 11th century.
First mentioned in 1275, the town hall was the political heart of the local self-government of the medieval metropolis from the 13th to the 17th century.
By 1706 the building complex had reached the dimensions of today's main building. In 1830, work began on the partial demolition of the Gothic town hall."
The main building, as seen in the photo, was built in the 1870s in neo-Gothic style.

La mairie d'Erfurt est située au marché aux poissons.

Mentionné pour la première fois en 1275, l'hôtel de ville a été le cœur politique de l'autonomie locale de la métropole médiévale du XIIIe au XVIIe siècle.
En 1706, le complexe de bâtiments avait atteint les dimensions du bâtiment principal actuel. En 1830, les travaux de démolition partielle de l'hôtel de ville gothique ont commencé".
Le bâtiment principal, comme on le voit sur la photo, a été construit dans les années 1870 en style néo-gothique.

De Vismarkt in Groningen met de neo-klassieke gevel van de Korenbeurs, waar tot 1984 het graan verhandeld werd, en daarachter Der A-kerk, na de Martinikerk de tweede grote middeleeuwse kerk in de binnenstad.
Deze maakte ik met de gorilla-pod, wat niet heel erg fijn balanceren was op deze steentjes.

The "Haarlemmersluis" is a 17th century lock located at the eastern end of the Brouwersgracht (canal), where the Singel canal flows into the river IJ.
The lock is a popular tourist spot. Large numbers of canal cruise boats pass through it.
The area around the lock was a fish market for centuries.
De Nieuwe Haarlemmersluis werd voltooid in 1602 als sluis in de zeedijk rond de stad, om te voorkomen dat het zeewater bij vloed de grachten in zou stromen.
Het gebied rond de sluis was eeuwenlang een vismarkt. De Amsterdamse handel in haring concentreerde zich langs de kade aan het IJ, tussen de Martelaarsgracht en de Haarlemmersluis, de "Haringpakkerij" met als middelpunt de Haringpakkerstoren. Hier werd de aangevoerde haring gekeurd, schoongespoeld, opnieuw gezouten, gekuipt en verhandeld. In 1662 werd bij de sluis de Kleine Vismarkt opgericht, ter onderscheid met de Grote Vismarkt op de Dam. De haringkar die vandaag de dag op de sluis staat, doet nog denken aan de geschiedenis van deze plek als haringpakkerij en vismarkt (Wikipedia).

Het Vissersbastion (Halászbástya) is een bekend bouwwerk in Boedapest. Het bevindt zich aan de rivierzijde van de Burchtheuvel, District I, en verrees tussen 1895 en 1901
Het bouwwerk biedt uitzicht over de Donau, op de stadsdelen van Pest met het opvallende parlementsgebouw
Over de juiste oorsprong van de naam bestaat geen zekerheid. Waarschijnlijk komt de naam van de vissers die beneden in de Waterstad (Viziváros) woonden en hier hun vismarkt hielden. Het kan ook zijn dat de naam voortkomt uit het feit dat dit deel van de burchtmuur van oudsher werd verdedigd door de vissers van Buda. Het is geen vesting (bastion) maar een terras

There is no certainty about the correct origin of the name. Probably comes the name of the fishermen who lived downstairs in the Water City (Viziváros) and held their fish market here. A flurry of snow as I walked in the centre of Groningen yesterday. Here's the stately Fish Market looking toward the Der Aa-kerk, a gothic church dating from 1425/1495. The other building is the former Grain Exchange, built in neo-classical style, 1862-1865. Today it's been converted into a supermarket.
Achterzijde van enkele panden aan de Vismarkt gereflecteerd in het Dijlewater, op de achtergrond zie je nog een stuk van de eeuwenoude Hoogbrug of Grootbrug de oudste stenen brug in Mechelen. Ze overspant de rivier en verbindt de IJzerenleen met de Guldenstraat. De brug is een boogbrug met 4 gewelven (van resp. 6, 10, 7 en 5 m lang)..

Trouville-sur-Mer ontstaan als visserijhaven. Pas later werd het tevens een badplaats, waar veel schilders op afkwamen.
Speciaal ten behoeve van toeristen uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd toen een inmiddels weer verdwenen pier aangelegd waar schepen uit Le Havre konden aanleggen (1892-1943). De visserij bleef daarnaast een belangrijke bron van bestaan. De overdekte vismarkt (1936) van Trouville-sur-Mer was van groot belang voor de regio, tot het gebouw op 24 september 2006 na kortsluiting volledig uitbrandde. Vijftig personen raakten werkloos. Voor hen werd in oktober een benefiet-veiling opgezet door de televisiepersoonlijkheid Antoine de Caunes.
Trouville-sur-Mer werd op 24 augustus 1944 bevrijd door 2500 Belgische en Luxemburgse soldaten van de Belgische 1e Infanteriebrigade (ook wel Brigade Piron).
