For our day in port at Villefranche-sur-Mer, Mike and I joined a group of fellow passengers for a private excursion. After our tour of Nice, brief visit to Èze, and photo stop in La Turbie, we only had time for a quick dash through Monaco before returning to the ship.
Our guide, Jacques Cygler, pointed out a few of the important sights as we drove through the streets of Monaco. I snapped this quick shot as we headed down the Avenue de la Porte Neuve; I don't think this building (on Avenue du Port) has any particular significance, but I loved the architecture -- the wrought-iron balconies, aqua shutters, and striped awnings. (Apologies for the poor quality of the photo, but I took it through the window of a moving minivan...)

For our day in port at Villefranche-sur-Mer, Mike and I joined a group of fellow passengers for a private excursion. After our tour of Nice and a brief visit to the medieval hilltop village of Èze, our guide (Jazcques Cygler) made one last detour before driving into Monaco, stopping by the Rondo Prince Rainier III at La Turbie to share a spectacular panorama of the French Riviera.
This photo offers a partial glimpse of the view from the scenic overlook/stone balcony known as the Rondo Prince Rainier III of Monaco (or, more simply, the ''Rondo''). The buildings in the foreground (surrounding the rocky hilltop) are located in La Turbie, while the dark tower peeking peeking up between two rises is the Tour Odéon in Monaco. Further along the coastline, the headland jutting out into the water is Cape Martin part of the commune (township) of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. The Rondo
Take a moment to admire one of the best panoramic views along the Riviera. From the ''Rondo'' you have a bird's eye view of the Principality of Monaco, Cap Martin, and as far as Italy. The La Turbie landscape has inspired many a poet and writer, including some of the most famous in the region. André Theuriet said of the village ''La Turbie, an incredible balcony suspended over a patchwork of capes and a vast stretch of deep blue sea'' (extract from Au Pays Bleu).

For our day in port at Villefranche-sur-Mer, Mike and I joined a group of fellow passengers for a private excursion. After our tour of Nice, brief visit to Èze, and photo stop in La Turbie, we only had time for a quick dash through Monaco before returning to the ship.
Our guide parked his minivan in an underground garage at the heart of Monte Carlo, and gave us 15 minutes for a quick peek at the world-famous Monte Carlo Casino (Casino de Monte-Carlo). While we didn't have enough time to check out the gambling halls, we did have a look around the lobby of the ornate Beaux-Arts casino.
Photography is not permitted inside the gaming halls; however, visitors are allowed to take photos of the lobby. This shot faces the southwest end of the main lobby. I loved the fresco work and attention to detail...

Les Jardins St Martin
