The Lewis Brothers (Grocery) Store was built in 1933. They expanded their product line and began selling Gulf gasoline in 1941 until the late 1980s. Today the building houses a successful antique store which is open Thurs. - Sunday. The owner of the business lives in Pipe Creek, and being quite knowledgeable of the local history, decided to keep the Lewis Bros. Store name. Located on State Highway 16S. Pipe Creek, Texas.

As always, your faves and comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

Brickmania Visible Gas Pump Kit. I love vintage gas station stuff. This was an instant buy when saw it at the Brickmania store in the Woodfield mall. It's a great little kit.

They talk about the glory days, but glory for whom?

When this town had 4 hotels, a sawmill and saloon

There’s been a century of bust but there was never any boom

Now the buildings look too tired to fall down

Folks sleepwalk through a one pump town...

1/2" scale diorama detail

Visible gas pumps.

Bodie is a ghost town in the Bodie Hills east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Mono County, California. It became a boom town in 1876 after the discovery of a profitable line of gold, and suddenly attracted several thousand residents. The U.S. Department of the Interior recognizes the designated Bodie Historic District as a National Historic Landmark.

Bodie is preserved in a state of arrested decay. Only a small part of the town survived with about 110 structures still standing, including one of many once operational gold mills. Visitors can walk the deserted streets of a town that once was a bustling area of activity. Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods.

The remodel wouldn't be complete without a set of restored vintage gas pumps out front!

Visible gas pumps first appeared around 1915, and went out of use in the 1930's. This particular pump is located at Rick's Antiques in Forest, Virginia.

"Essolene" was a special motor fuel introduced by Esso in 1933, advertised as containing an additive that guaranteed smoother engine performance. The ads claimed that this gasoline contained a proprietary "special solvent oil that cleans valve stems, piston rings, and piston-ring grooves". Esso's 1933 ads proclaimed: "Make one simple, convincing test -- try Essolene once in your car, under any conditions you choose. Essolene will speak for itself." I would appreciate hearing from anyone having further background on what this special solvent additive was, and how effective it was. Essolene seems to have been marketed only during the decade of the 1930s.

This vintage pump was moved to this site from another location, to serve as part of the outdoor display at Rick's Antiques (a "vintage Esso service station" motif). It is possible that the body of the pump and the Essolene globe on top might have come from different locations.

With visible pumps, gasoline was pumped from underground tanks into the visible glass cylinder at the top of the pump. The operator watched the level of gas in the cylinder and stopped the flow when the gas reached the desired gallons. There were three different mechanisms for drawing the gas from the underground tank into the overhead glass cylinder: manual hand operated, electric motor-driven, or air-operated. Once in the glass cylinder, the gas seems to have flowed by gravity into the car's gas tank, controlled by the nozzle seen on the right of this pump.

Many states banned visible pumps because of fire hazards and inaccurate measurements. Clock meter pumps replaced visible pumps in the 1930s.

By the 1915s, some visible gas pumps stood upwards of 10-feet tall. The cylinders were marked, by gallon, similar to a large science beaker. Beyond being a measurement device, these pumps demonstrated the clarity of the gasoline; at the time, customers became increasingly aware that pollutants in gasoline would harm their engine. Another function was to allow the customer to quickly see which pump was ready to fill a gas tank, based on which cylinders were full. The cylinders had a release valve attached, gravity feeding the tank of a customer’s vehicle when released.

Visible gas pumps first appeared around 1915, and went out of use in the 1930's. This particular pump is located at Patterson's Mill Country Store in Durham County near Chapel Hill, NC. Patterson's Mill is kind of a combined "old country store" and museum filled with NC collectibles.

This pump was moved here from another location as part of the store's extensive collection of vintage items.

Installed the glass cylinder tie rods and domed top and globe ring. Ready to begin rusting the chipped areas on same.

No gas tomorrow either.

Couldn’t resist an “artsy” shot.

The Museum's placard for this gas pump reads:

WAYNE 515

Manufactured by: Wayne Oil Tank and Pump Company, Fort Wayne, Indiana

This is an example of a visible pump that was built in 1924. These pumps first appeared around 1915. Gasoline was pumped from underground tanks into a visible glass cylinder above the pump. The operator watched the level of gas in the cylinder and stopped the flow when the gas reached the desired gallons.

The pump mechanisms on visible pumps could be operated by three different methods: manual hand operated (like the pump seen here), electric motor-driven, or air-operated.

Located in the high desert country of California, Bodie (which once boasted a population of over 10,000) is today a deserted ghost town. In 1877 gold was discovered there and the resultant gold rush transformed Bodie from a town of 20 to a boomtown. The Boone Store, erected in 1879, was owned by Harvey Boone, a direct decendant of Daniel Boone, and served as a general store, gas station and warehouse. Today it just sits, alone and forgotten, as a reminder of the Old West.

Two blocks off the Lincoln Highway in Ogallala, Nebraska, this vintage gas station now serves as a small visitor's information kiosk. They were having a used book sale on the day I happened by.

Assignment: The goal of this assignment is to capture an image that conveys tallness or height. Combining creative composition with the right subject(s) can produce an image that really conveys height in the confines of an image on your computer screen. To add more challege, make something not so tall seem much taller.

WIT: I came upon this unknown old object yesterday - which thanks to my contacts, I found out it was a Visible Gas Pump. In doing a bit of research online, I estimate this to be over 9 1/2 feet tall, almost 10 feet. This was behind some abandoned houses that I was photographing and i was struck by the contrast of this tall rusted object in the middle of a well maintained yard. Which is even more bizarre considering it is surrounded by falling down structures on each side and behind me.

Not much editing done - I'm not at my house this weekend and I'm using someone else computer, so just a quick run through in Picnik to brighten it up a tad and that's about it.

I found thisgas pump model kit in a dust corner of a Hobby shop and had to buy it to display with my model T. Its, 1/24 scale, the body is made of solid resin, and the rest is metal, with clear plastic parts.

This visible gas pump is located in the McCone county museum at the edge of Circle, MT. For more information:
