My current reading matter - a nostalgic look back at the halcyon days of 1992, sitting on a 1999 ThinkPad. I have the impression that, back then, it was assumed that the internet we have now - primarily text, text and pictures, some video - would be a very short-lived transitory step towards the *real* future of cyberspace, but of course it didn't turn out that way.

It's surprisingly acidic. The author essentially dismisses the VR "boom" in the first chapter, arguing that it was a lot of hype put out by a clique of self-congratulatory, occasionally well-meaning, but generally untrustworthy hucksters. The rest of the book veers off into a wide-ranging collection of essays on the more esoteric elements of 1990s-era internet futurism - hypertext, artificial intelligence, reality. He generally avoids talking about the technology. Hypertext would lead to the death of the author, because you could make your own media, and I suppose in a way this has happened. Some of it is spot-on (I spotted Google News in there), some of it was never going to happen (Xanadu), some of it might have happened but didn't pan out (Storyspace).

As for the internet - or "Internet" - here it is. Page 125. The book's only paragraph about it. There's mention of smart television later on, which covers some of the same ground, but there you go. Again, it's not that the author wasn't aware of it, he had his mind on other things, and the network was just a means to an end. The book tends to concentrate on academic projects rather than practical real-world business opportunities, which is another thing that dates it.

Looking back it seems that the internet took off and became so ubiquitous so quickly that there was never a next generation of internet pontificators - the big pop-intellectual publishing phenomena of the late 1990s, 2000s were books about economics, advertising, culture etc; the internet itself became (perhaps rightly) merely a medium. The names in Virtual Worlds - Timothy Leary, Ted Nelson, Jaron Lanier, Nicholas Negroponte - are nowadays either dead or trapped in academia or yesterday's men or (in the case of Negroponte) they will live to see their dreams die; or we will live to see that their dreams were a sham.

another of my avatars - this time at Lively - a new google virtual world chat program. One thing this virtual world has that other don't - the ability to 'do things' to other - like punch them in the stomach, or dance, or hold hands. I found most 'interactions' were not nice - but then again I was among strangers. Could be interesting to be 'expressing' oneself to friends with some of these 'animation' interactions.

The Schmidt House is located in Tumwater, Washington and was built for Leopold F. Schmidt, founder of the Olympia Brewing Company, in 1904. This elegant home earned the nickname "Three Meter" which is the subject of Schmidt family debate. The most prevalent version is that workers in the old brewery below, hearing the boisterous play of the young Schmidt boys in the yard up the hill, jokingly stated that all the noise reminded them of the battle of Three Meter Hill. The name caught on and has been used down through the years.

INTELIGÊNCIA VIRTUAL

Pense, não pense.

Mas, o que significa isto?

O vídeo invisível tornou-se

bolha transparente e trama a partir

daí todos os movimentos conhecidos:

capta, empurra, embrião,

expansão, regressão,

vertical, parafuso,

duplo mortal,

performance olímpica,

situação banal,

horizontal,

tornou-se um fio no espaço,

cresceu universal

e sobre o tempo

dançou

ao som do espírito

sobre as águas,

onipotente,

onipresente,

todo mundo ficou boquiaberto,

mas não houve susto

porque todos

sem aviso prévio

conheceram imediatamente

que apresentava-se

a inteligência viva liberta.

INTELLIGENCE VIRTUEL

Pensez, ne pense pas.

Mais qu'est-ce que cela signifie?

La vidéo est devenue invisible

bulle transparente et le théâtre à partir

donc tous connus mouvements:

capture, répusion, embryon

croissance, régression

vertical, visser

double mortel,

performance olympique,

situation banale,

horizontal,

est devenu un espace de fil,

augmenté universal

et sur le temps

dansé

au son de l'esprit

sur les eaux,

tout-puissant,

omniprésente,

tout le monde bouche bée,

mais absence de choc

parce que tout

sans préavis

rencontré immédiatement

qui sont presents

l'intelligence libère vie.

VIRTUAL INTELLIGENCE

Think, do not think.

But what does this mean?

The video became invisible

transparent bubble and weft starting

hence all movements known:

captures, pushes, embryo,

expansion, regression,

vertical, screw,

double mortal,

olympic performance,

banal situation,

horizontal,

became a wire space,

expanded universal

and on the time

danced

at the sound of spirit

over the waters,

omnipotent,

omnipresent,

everyone gaped,

but no fright

because all

without prior warning

knew immediately

which itself presented

the intelligence free live.

Virtual Enterprises International and WISE held the summit in New York from April 4-7, 2011 and was sponsored by New York Life Foundation, Deloitte, HSBC and McGraw-Hill Education. Students competition included the National Business Plan Competition (NBPC) and Global Business Challenge (GBC). The NBPC challenged Virtual Enterprise students from across the country to demonstrate their global business expertise through written business plans and oral presentations. It showcased the best practices, rewarded excellence and allowed high school students to apply sophisticated knowledge and skills attributed to business professionals and college students. 19 teams began the competition with the winner announced on the April 7th at the Trade Fair. The GBC competition tasked students to work in multinational teams to identify the challenges, opportunities and risks involved in a global business by examining a business case styd. After 2.5 hours of analysis and deliberation, teams presented their findings to a plane of judges.

update 1-30-16

1st mock up test board blew up the 1st 7812 that I had mistakenly installed that should have been a 7824. Duh, I knew that. Damn.

While figuring out what had happened I checked the specs and the absolute max input is 35v for the 7812. I had mis-drawn the development sheet and used a 7812 for the 1st regulator. Also I had used a spare transformer for the mock-up and it had a 15v secondary. Using the doubler circuit, and 1.4 DC peak factor: 2x15x1.4 = 42v. It actually measured 52v at the doubler output no load. My Mains line has been 124v AC lately. Oops!! I'll start over tomorrow

update 2-1-16

I GIVE UP. I had the extra 25.2v CT transformer already but trying to save $10 and use an existing 13v winding on the main power transformer I spent 3 days trying to get a neat circuit to work and blew up $8 in parts.

Survey results show a majority of organizations are already using some form of virtualization in the branch office. The survey was commissioned by Blue Coat and conducted at Interop from April 27-28, 2010.
