Two Cajun coffee pots called BIG-UNS. I found these two in Golden Meadow, Louisiana, at least 20 years ago. Not an antique, but a cultural icon. They made a lot of Community dark roast coffee!
This is a part of one of my projects - the panorama of highest mountain in Ireland in very high detail. Oryginal bitmap is almost 0.5GB in size, here I presented just 85MB jpg version.
The picture, composed with over 60 RAW files from Pentax K-5 and 300mm lens, was used as a part of the animation. The total amount of data used to create the animation reached 105 GB and it was just virtual flight over the Carrauntoohil. I used this as an exercise - my goal now is to create an animation of virtual camera movement over vider area of Macgillycuddy's Reeks in Co. Kerry, Ireland. Work is in progress, but I think that I will need bigger graphic station soon :-). And better weather for photographic sessions!

My friend Michael Naimark is exploring new ideas for virtual reality experiences, in collaboration with Google and other researchers. To discuss this work, we got together with two other colleagues, Steve Gano and Jim McKee -- with whom we worked at the Apple Multimedia Lab in the eighties, pushing the envelope on related questions.
We started with a tour of the historic Sentinel Building in North Beach, home of American Zoetrope -- where Francis Coppola worked on many cinematic masterpieces like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. We checked out the underground screening room and sound mixing room where some of that work took place, then headed upstairs to Michael and Jim’s studios, for a wonderful conversation about the new VR frontier.
Michael and his colleagues are researching how people are represented in virtual reality. Their first experiment at Google’s “Big Chairs” Park led to some helpful guidelines on how to film people for VR, by using different camera angles and distances.
They’re also investigating ‘hyper-images’ that resemble a group of people, but that are shot at different times and composited together to create both ‘credible’ and ‘incredible’ pictures. To enable more experiments like these, Michael is developing ‘IMU VR’, a new type of camera that could make it easier for communities to tell their stories in VR. More on this later.
It was great to reconnect with my colleagues and brainstorm these ideas together. It felt like the good old days, and the creative juices were flowing all over again ...

I bought a bunch of Christmas theme "glasses" that have finely printed patterns on them that create an images from a point source of light. Fun to look through! You can find them on the web if you don't see them at a store near you. 3D effect, too. Best thing -- watching traffic at night with them!
Normally at this time of year I would be attending a Life Ministries youth "Quake" with the church kids. This year due to COVID the event was on line in an abbreviated form. These pictures are nothing special. Hopefully next year we will be at an actual weekend event again.
Just for amusement, in 2006 a virtual orchestra was set up outside the Southbank Centre in London. The way it worked was that a piece of classical music was playing on a loop and when you sat on the relevent box you heard the part which the musician in that position was playing above the sound of the orchestra as a whole.

Stigonema se va abriendo paso entre un tapiz de gelatinas verdes y azuladas que pintan vidrieras blandas sobre la roca, lo hace con sus mil pies alargados, brazos y lenguas que en su fluir lento van buscando la tenue luz.
A medida que avanza Stigonema va dejando su rastro grueso de mucílago vacío en el que se aprecian las cicatrices de la células que fueron abriendo sus caminos sinuosos hacia la luz. Toda esa masa de gelatina es ahora cuna de otras cianobacterias que como Cyanostylon entreteje entre sus ramas sus finos hilos en cuentas de collares azulados.
La densa red de filamentos de Stigonema forma una maraña muy cerrada que actúa como una esponja; absorbe y retiene agua para que la colonia no se seque y, al mismo tiempo, crea un hábitat en el que otros organismos como algas, amebas, nematodos e incluso rotíferos pueden sobrevivir.
Sobre las húmedas calizas por las que se desliza silenciosa en la penumbra, Stigonema va pintando con su cuerpo las paredes, no es un hábitat muy propicio para la vida y por eso quizá Stigonema parece abrazarse a ella enraizando la trama que forma su cuerpo acuoso de gelatina. La especie que mostramos aquí, y que se señala por vez primera para la Península Ibérica, muy probablemente corresponda a Stigonema informe, especie quizá cosmopolita y poco citada, que puede vivir tanto en la superficies rocosas sumergidas como sobre rocas húmedas.
Todas estas formaciones que abren sus ventanales verdes entre la gelatina de Stigonema informe recuerdan mucho a otras de vida sumergida como las que desarrolla Stigonema mamillosum en ríos y lagunas.
Estos céspedes de filamentos enredados de Stigonema informe son de color parduzco, amarillento o blanquecino, y suele crecer a partir un filamento principal con ramas bien diferenciadas. Éstos pueden presentar hasta 4-6 filas de células, de 38-42 µm de ancho y ramas de 24.0-44.0µm de ancho y una vaina gruesa. Las células son de hemisféricas a redondeadas, a veces agrupadas formando "paquetes", 7.2-16.0µm de largo, 6.4-12.0 µm de ancho y con un contenido celular granulado, verde azulado, como los que se muestran en las imágenes.
En las muestras recogidas en la cueva de Arredondo, solo los extremos de los filamentos parecen tener actividad y corresponden a los expuestos a la tenue luz que penetra desde la entrada, vistos al microscopio con epifluorescencia, las vainas mucilaginosas se muestran en color verde y los cuerpos celulares vivos en color rojo, debido a la clorofila a que contienen.

Las fotografías, tomadas a 1000 y 400 aumentos con las técnicas de contraste de interferencia y epifluorescencia, proceden de unas muestra recogidas en el interior de la cueva del Escalón en Arredondo (Cantabria) el 23 de noviembre de 2019 en el marco del apasionante proyecto de investigación astrobiológica que Astroland está desarrollando para acercarnos a Marte.
