Calopteryx virgo, le Caloptéryx vierge est un insecte odonate du sous-ordre des zygoptères ou demoiselles qui fait partie d'une famille qui ne comprend, en Europe, qu'un seul genre, Calopteryx.
With having to stay very local recently I thought I would miss the emergence of this species, but last Friday I got in the car for the first time for many weeks and drove the 4 miles to my favourite Demoiselle site.
The morning was freezing with quite a frost, this made it hard work to find anything as all the insects were deep in the undergrowth, and as soon as the sun came up it warmed up so quickly everything was very active as soon as they showed.
Despite this I did manage to get a small number of shots, and also some great views of these beautiful insects.
Esta hembra de Calopteryx virgo volaba a orillas del río Tajo en compañía de un par de hembras y un macho, tenían querencia por ese tallo donde posa tranquila. Hace unos años pude ver a esta misma especie en el mismo lugar donde las he vuelto a ver este año que se nos va, parece que están bien adaptadas a este precioso lugar cercano al salto de Poveda, parque natural Alto Tajo, Guadalajara.

Calopterix virgo mâle
Les mâles, territoriaux, vont se percher sur des plantes de la berge (et, peu farouches, sur un observateur immobile) .
Ils chassent des insectes qui passent et retournent souvent sur les mêmes perchoirs.
Ils peuvent voler loin de l’eau, de même que les femelles qui n’y retournent que pour pondre ou chercher un partenaire sexuel.
Leur vol est assez lent, si bien que leur battements d'ailes indolent peut les faire se confondre avec des papillons.

Hacía mucho tiempo que no disfrutaba entre estos bonitos zigópteros. Fue un encuentro muy agradable.

Hembra de Calopteryx virgo posando sobre la punta de un junco en el rio Guadalquivir, Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén).
Calopteryx virgo female posing on the tip of a reed in the Guadalquivir river, Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén).
De jufferkraanvogel ( "een van mijn favoriete vogels") staat bekend om zijn mooie dansen die vaak worden verward met baltsgedrag in verband met voorplanting.
Kraanvogels voeren echter het hele jaar door van deze dansen op. De dans verstevigt de sociale banden binnen de groep want ook jongere dieren doen hieraan mee.
Tijdens de rui kunnen de meeste kraanvogels niet vliegen. Omdat Jufferkraanvogels hun slagpennen geleidelijk wisselen kunnen zij wel blijven vliegen tijdens de rui. hun slagpennen blijven twee jaar zitten.
In de herfst komen de kraanvogels met honderden, soms duizenden bij elkaar om vanuit daar samen naar de overwinterings-gebieden te trekken.
Hoge gebergten en zeeën vormen geen hindernis voor deze vluchten. Op de trek vormen ze zogenoemde
V-formaties en ze maken veel lawaai tijdens de trek.

Macho de Calopteryx virgo fotografiado en el rio Mayor del Molinillo próximo a la localidad conquense de Cañete. De los pocos ejemplares de esta especie que avistamos solo pude realizar un par de fotografias y ésta es una de ellas.
Male of Calopteryx virgo photographed in the river Mayor del Molinillo oróximo to the Cuenca town of Cañete. Of the few specimens of this species that we sighted, I could only make a couple of photographs and this is one of them.
Esta bonita hembra reposaba sobre las flores de la menta.
