Spring is coming early in Virginia Beach

A street scene in Virginia Beach.

If you look closely you can see the ears for the five babies. She has built a nest in the trunk of a car. The trunk has rusted out on one side which gives her access in and out She has been sheltering in there for 2 days now. It has been very windy and I think she is protecting the babies from the wind. I have put a dish of water out for her and given her some dry cat food.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

The state park is near the site of the first landing on April 26, 1607 of Christopher Newport and the Virginia Company colonists before establishing themselves at Jamestown. The park includes cabins, areas for camping, fishing, and swimming, a public beach, and over 19 miles (31 km) of trails for hiking and biking. Virginia's most popular state park, it's visited by over a million people each year. Its main entrance is located on Shore Drive across from the beach camping entrance.

I had a close call with this snake as I rode past on my bike. It was sunning itself on the path and I did not see it until the last minute. Strange thing is there was not any water that close to where it was. I stopped my bike and went back to get a few photos. This was one of 5 different snakes that I saw today.

This is a new snake for me. It was hidden in the grass. It had an almost translucent sheen to it and made me think that it was going to shed it's skin. After reading about this snake I now know that the sheen is normal. It completely ignored me and that is normal for this snake too. It is mostly aquatic and feeds primarily on eels. It you enlarge the image you will see the red stripe on it.

Haha. A little play on the word maize for my title.

Another spectacular sunset this evening here in Virginia Beach. Just had to find the right place to capture this gorgeous sunset and I think I did pretty good this cornfield and barn. Not only did I have to find a good place to compose this image, but it had to be easily accessible and some place I could park my truck.

Feel free to let me know what you think and thanks for looking.

A watershot from a couple weeks ago. The waterproof camera I have is great for taking pics on vacation of fish, turtles, etc., but it's not that good for wave/action photography. Knowing that, I still try to shoot waves from time to time, especially when it's glassy with good light. I get very few images that are worth keeping, but it's fun to try. Anyway, this was a little swell coming in that didn't break yet. I was attempting to focus on the surface of the water because I thought the highlights were cool. It actually achieved the focus I wanted and turned out really artsy and mysterious. Perhaps someday I'll be able to afford a decent water camera, housing or even a GoPro. Until then, there is some level of satisfaction getting a good image with less than ideal equipment.
