The overcast conditions at the beginning of the eclipse had us very nervous, but the ground scenery couldn't have been cooler!

F-16C 96-0080 of the 480th FS 'Warhawks' from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany borrowed by the Viper Demo Team for their display at RIAT 2019. During the Sunday performance the right horizontal stabalizer delaminted shortly after these pictures were taken. Maj. Garret Schmitz, pilot and commander of the Demo Team, stopped his routine and declared an emergency. Following a slow fly by to allow damage inspection, he went on to make a safe recovery.

The corona, or outer atmosphere of the sun, is visible around the edges of the moon as it prevents the majority of the light of the sun from reaching the earth.
Just a small sliver of sun remains visible; this was the last photo of the partial phase of the eclipse before totality, using a Thousand Oaks Optical solar film filter on the camera.

First contact (C1) was hidden behind clouds and rain at our location (Shaw AFB), this was the first clear photo of the partial phase of the eclipse, as the clouds were clearing.

Jim Beasley Jr. with his P-51 Mustang “Bald Eagle” flying in the United States Air Force (USAF) Heritage Flight with the USAF F-16. Jim has been flying historic fighter aircraft for over 20 years and has accumulated thousands of hours in the P-51, Supermarine Spitfire and F4U Corsair. Jim grew up around aviation flying across the United States with his Father who flew many aircraft types. Jim’s fascination with the Mustang began early and at the age of 10 he convinced his Father to buy his first P-51 Mustang. Jim still has that first Mustang to this day. Watch this moving performance of a modern fighter flying side by side with a vintage fighter in a dramatic display of air power.

Sunday display cut short after the tailplane suffered a significant failure...cause unknown at this time. Considerable skill shown by the pilot to bring most of his aircraft back to the airfield! Closer inspection revealed...that's not going to polish out!
