Associations of grain with life are probably even older than bread. Here is also the suggestion of humanity’s vulnerability.
In a September 1889 letter to Theo van Gogh, Vincent wrote "I'm struggling with a canvas I started a few days before my illness - a reaper. The study is all yellow, extremely thickly painted, but the subject was beautiful and simple. For I see in this reaper - a vague figure toiling away for all he's worth in the midst of the heat to finish his task - I see in him the image of death, in the sense that humanity might be the wheat he is reaping... But there's no sadness in this death, this one takes place in broad daylight with a sun flooding everything with light of pure gold."
In "Wheat Field With a Reaper" (1889), Vincent van Gogh had pictured death "on the point of smiling."

The original motte-and-bailey castle here was built in the late 11th century. William the Conqueror (r.1066–87) granted lands to some of his followers to defend the Anglo-Welsh border, which remained unsettled for many years after the Conquest. These men became powerful marcher lords, ruling their lands independently of royal control.
It was probably Picot de Say, who had been granted the estates of Clun and Stokesay, who built Clun Castle, high on a natural spur guarding the Clun valley. The castle became the centre of a vast lordship known as the barony of Clun.
Almond Blossoms is a group of several paintings made in 1888 and 1890 by Vincent van Gogh in Arles and Saint-Rémy, southern France of blossoming almond trees.
Sunflowers may remind us of Vincent van Gogh and vibrant yellow colors etc. But to Helen Keller, these mean much more...as expressed in her quote above...unfortunately this deafblind author couldn't see their shadows regardless.

Three paintings by Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890) that were painted in September of 1889 at an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Vincent had great admiration for the work of the French artist Jean-François Millet. Like Millet, he also wanted to paint peasant life. By 1889 Vincent had found his own direction but his ambition to follow in Millet's footsteps lasted almost until his death on May 16, 1890.
These three from the psychiatric clinic were copied from prints that were on hand in the asylum, then Vincent picked his own colors. From left to right they are called The Sheepshearer (after Millet), Peasant Woman Cutting Straw (after Millet) and The Reaper (after Millet).

Tanguy was a paint grinder who sold art supplies and was an art dealer. He was one of the first to show and sell van Gogh's paintings.

Saint -Paul-de-Mausole
Vincent came to Saint-Remy de Provence on 8 May 1889 to be voluntarily committed to the Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric institution, which was housed in a former monastery. He had suffered a series of severe breakdowns since December 1888 and believed he should be institutionalised for his own sake and that of others. He received good treatment from his doctor, Théophile Peyron, who was convinced that Vincent did not have a psychiatric illness but was suffering from epilepsy. He was prescribed two hours of alternating hot and cold baths twice a week; so-called hydrotherapy was often used to treat mental illness in the 19th century.A great many of the asylum’s rooms were empty, and Vincent was able to use one as a studio.

My husband and I got to go to the Immersive Van Gogh experience, which was very cool.
The neatest part was part where we put on the headsets... I can't think what you call them... the headsets that take you into a scene and move you around, and you turn around and look up and down and see everything. I had never had one on before and it was so much fun! (Thank you Steven... they are Virtual Reality headsets.)
Such a sad man, with no treatment for his mental problems... and it was a surprise finding out he was color blind, and rather badly nearsighted.
Anyway, I recommend it if it comes to a place near you.
“I experience a period of frightening clarity in those moments when nature is so beautiful. I am no longer sure of myself, and the paintings appear as in a dream”
Vincent van Gogh
Between 1882 and 1890, five artists—Vincent van Gogh, along with Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Emile Bernard, and Charles Angrand—flocked to villages on the fringes of Paris. Unlike the earlier Impressionists, who in the previous decade had spent significant time in suburban locations further from the city, this next generation of ambitious artists preferred the northwestern suburbs around Asnières. This area along the Seine River had long been a popular spot for recreation and relaxation but was becoming increasingly populated with coal, gas, and manufacturing facilities in the last decades of the 19th century. And while its industrial development was an unappealing aspect to many, these artists found in the changing physical and social landscape a fresh and rich source of creativity..
For Macro Mondays' theme "Defining Beauty" I quote a sentence by Vincent van Gogh

Watermelon is a comfort food for me! I remember as a child eating slice after slice held in my hand. The juice dripped over everything... Such fun and so delicious!!

In 1881 van Gogh briefly resided in Etten and produced a number of drawings of local peasants and laborers performing routine, humble tasks.
This early drawing, a winter road with pollard willows and a man with a broom, was one of van Gogh's first experiments with a figure on an autumn road.
