After the Storm, Amherstburg, ON
A huge storm came through Essex County on August 19th. I was out getting gas when the clouds opened up, revealing a beautiful sunset. I literally ran through the house, collecting umbrella and camera (whose battery was quite low, apparently), and out to the dock along the Detroit River behind my house. I took as many shots as my battery would allow, but every time I changed position something else was revealed. For example, this heron / crane was there the entire time and I didn't realize until I had already taken a bunch of the boring old ducks underneath the dock ;) If you look at the other two shots I took farther back, keep in mind that the crane was there the entire time. Try to pick him out from the rest of the silhouette. And when I turned to go home, I saw the largest, most vivid rainbow I have ever seen. That was about the same time my battery ran out.

the Denton Vigil take a moment of silence that lasts for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The amount of time the officer kneeled on George Floyd's neck.
This perfectly formed pot looks like a Lonnie Vigil of the Nambe Pueblo. I have no providence so can not be positive. The pot has a very thin wall and measures nine inches in height.

Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts adorned with rainbow lights in honor of the victims of the Pulse massacre during Monday nights powerful vigil. A man is standing on the balcony observing the thousands in the crowd who came together to mourn the 49 victims. I was so overwhelmed with emotions during the vigil... I could hardly gather the strength to take the few photos that I did. I have never been this close to such a horrific event. My boyfriend and I were supposed to go to Pulse soon with his parents. Thankfully it wasn't on Sunday night. It is very sobering when you come to the harsh realization that there are people in this world who hate you enough to kill you just because of who you love. I am so heart broken by this senseless violence. So many young lives were cut short for no reason. I am filled with so much grief and anger as I see how it has effected people in my community. so many people knew the victims and their families. The attack has effected the whole world. It was intended to break us, but we can't be broken no matter how far we are bent. The LGBT community is strong. This is not only an attack on the LGBT community, it was an attack on humanity. Love always conquers hate. We are Orlando.

It is in deepest regret and sadness that I inform you of Roney's cold-blooded murder on the early morning hours of January 16th. May he find peace wherever his journey has taken him.......
We need your Change more than ever now, to bring about justice so that Roney's death will not have been in vain.
In the quiet realm of memory, we become the silent sentinels, watching over the souls of those who have departed. Their presence lingers in the whispers of wind through leaves, the warmth of sunlight on our skin, and the echoes of their laughter in our hearts. It's a vigil we keep with love, a connection that transcends the boundaries of time and mortality. As we stand guard over the realm of remembrance, we ensure that their stories, their joys, and their wisdom endure, a testament to the eternal bond that exists between the living and the departed.
I don't know if the cadets will be holding their all-night vigil again this year, but if they do, I will miss it. This is from last year, at the Cenotaph in the dark and cold..

A little westie is keeping a vigil watching the house as he monitors the security system.
Prompt: Create an ultra-realistic, high-resolution digital fine art painting of a West Highland White Terrier intently watching a large security camera monitor. The dog is seated at a dark wooden desk in a home office setting, with its white back and perked ears clearly visible. The monitor displays a 3x3 grid of security camera feeds showing various indoor rooms and corridors in a cool-toned, slightly overexposed surveillance style. The Westie wears a simple collar and is fully absorbed in the scenes on screen, evoking a humorous and endearing sense of duty.
The office includes small details like shelves filled with books, gadgets, and home decor, and a keyboard and papers scattered on the desk. Natural daylight streams in from a nearby window, casting soft shadows and adding realism to the textures of the fur, wood, and electronics.
Style: Ultra-realistic digital fine art
Mood: Watchful, humorous, cozy
Lighting: Natural indoor lighting with soft highlights
Aspect Ratio: Horizontal
Resolution: 8K or higher for fine detail
A woman holds a candle at a vigil in memory of Yosuke Sasaki, the young Japanese man who died in a knife attack in Dundalk last week
There was a lot of unattractive and distracting stuff surrounding the bird, and I didn't have the zoom lens on at the time this was taken, so this has been cropped from a larger image. That means that some image quality is lost, but in this case it doesn't matter too much, because this shot is intended to be seen in smaller size; for printing, this will be cropped more, to make it tall and thin, to be used as a bookmark.
The sunset has been exaggerated and the contrast on the image has been increased to get a proper silhouette effect.

mr. vigil is a wonderful painter
I walked past this spot on Sunday and there was a couple of guys holding a candlelight vigil there with a poster of a young lady probably passed away some time ago. They blasted loud music with their portable player and I didn't want to pay too much attention to them. I continued my walk to the pier. When I returned, I saw the guys had gone, so I took out my digital Leica to frame a shot of this memorial. I actually had my M6 loaded with Fuji Neopan Acxros II film in it. But I think colors would look better here for the poster and the candle light in order to convey the mood. When I looked into the viewfinder with the frame lines bracketing the scene while dialing the focus ring on the lens to align the rangefinder patches at the poster, I immediately had an emotional response when I pushed the shutter. Now I understand why some people prefer Leica for their photography.
