Lumiere London Festival 2016. Produced by Artichoke, by commission of the Mayor of London: Keyframes
LED stick men that danced all over Liberty House.
Groupe LAPS brought the magic of movement to London with their delightful, dancing stick men. This nocturnal artwork charmed audiences with its story, taking over Liberty House on Regent Street. Part animation and part moving sculpture, the LED figures gave energy and excitement to the building with their routine inspired by iconic video games. Part of the KEYFRAMES series, this installation brought glimmers of the past to life and offered an opportunity to reminisce.
Based in France, Groupe LAPS is a collective of artists who are interested in using light in urban environments to tell stories. Comprising video makers, artists, musicians and lighting experts, the group create technical pieces that enchant audiences. Groupe LAPS’ work swings between reality and fiction, and their fleeting installations always have long-lasting impacts.

Linda Franklin, aka Barkinglips, is a writer, illustrator, artist, video-maker in her chosen city of Baltimore. In her ideal world she would be wearing a costume in the woods with her dogs while dancing and picking up rocks and found objects and branches shaped like people and making sculpture, paintings and music, and then sleeping and having terrific movie-like dreams.

WOMEN EXECUTIVES SEE TROUBLE IN VIDEOS
By PATRICK GOLDSTEIN
Are rock videos, with their emphasis on sexism and sadism, corrupting today's youth? A growing number of adults are concerned that they are. For instance:
• Jo Bergman is "troubled" by the sexism and violence in many of the videos she sees.
• Laura Foti says that "nothing made me happier" than to find out that her 15-year-old kid sister disliked the way women were portrayed on MTV.
• Robin Sloane abhors the "sensationalism" and "exaggerated violence" of rock videos.
Coming from concerned parents, these views might seem quite appropriate. But what makes them remarkable is that they're from the women who run three of the record industry's leading video departments, which supply new videos to the growing number of video programming outlets around the country.
During the last year, especially with the increasing popularity of MTV, the 24-hour music-video channel, many parents, educators and media observers have objected to the growing number of videos laced with images of sex and violence.
According to studies by watchdog organizations such as the National Coalition on Television Violence, many popular music videos contain elements of "gruesome sadism and gratuitous violence," which may have a "strong, harmful effect" on young American viewers.
The music business' top video executives, who in many cases are women, feel caught in the middle of what could become an explosive industrywide debate.
"It's difficult not to feel both defensive and ambivalent," said Bergman, who runs Warner Bros. Records' video department. "But we have to make the point right away that these same images are just as pervasive on sitcoms, TV commercials and hit movies such as 'Flashdance' and 'Porky's.' You wonder if we've become so inured to it that we just don't notice it anymore.
"There's definitely a problem. It's gotten to the point where we really don't need to see another girl cavorting in a video dressed in black suspender belts."
Bergman's colleagues are equally unsettled by some popular videos' portrayals of sex, which veteran video director Julien Temple has described as "forever represented by images of Nazi leather maidens writhing in front of a greedy wide-angle lens."
"I find it very sinister," said Foti, who became RCA video division marketing director after several years of covering video for Billboard magazine. "It's depressing to watch clip after clip portraying women as a conglomeration of fishnet stockings, breasts and spiked high heels.
"You wish there were more positive role models for women. It certainly can't be healthy for girls to watch these videos and think, 'Gee, I can't wait until I'm old enough to get my first pair of fishnet stockings.'"
The video chiefs acknowledge that video sex and violence is a particularly sensitive issue, largely because they are under enormous pressure to provide an attention-grabbing product to help sell records. However, in video, as in films and TV, the few genuinely creative pieces of work are often overwhelmed by the predominant onslaught of titillating visual images.
The record company video chiefs insist that, whenever possible, they have actively discouraged or rejected videos laced with gratuitous sex or violence. However, they acknowledge that it is virtually impossible to police every new project, which they often approve when the videos are still in sketch or story-board form.
"Sometimes a video will turn out completely different than you expected, just through the choice of casting, sets and costuming," explained Bergman, who acknowledged that she had refused several videos she found offensive, including Black Sabbath's "Trashed" and Devo's "Whip It," which was ultimately distributed by the band's management company.

………………………………………………………………………
"It's a very gray area—one person's sexism is another person's cartoon. If we were talking about song lyrics instead of video images, how many albums do you think the Rolling Stones would've been able to put out unscathed?"
Other observers worry that if censorship were strictly enforced, it might be difficult to control. One video department head mentioned a suburban Baltimore elementary school where students had been forbidden to attend performances of Donizetti's "Rita, or the Beaten Husband" on grounds that the plot portrays "sexism and the acceptance of violence as a means of problem-solving."
"The basic question we keep coming back to is what is rock 'n' roll really about?" Bergman said. "It's always been full of sex and violence, going back beyond the Stones' 'Under My Thumb.' The problem we're facing with videos is that when you make these lyrics visual and concrete, all the ambiguities are gone."
"If you go to a rock concert, you'll see just as many whips and chains on stage as you see on the screen," said Debbie Newman, a CBS Records executive in charge of video programming, sales and packaging. “I understand parents’ concerns, especially because most young, impressionable kids are watching videos now instead of cartoons.
>>>>>>
“If we find something offensive in a video, we’ll stop it before it gets started. But it’s all a matter of interpretation—I don’t think it’s fair for us to tell our artists they can’t make a video just because it crosses into a sensitive area.”
>>>>>
Most video executives are hesitant about imposing rigid guidelines on what they see as valid artistic self-expression.
“We have asked bands to tone down what we felt were extreme instances of violence or sexism,” explained Robin Sloane, Elektra Records video promotion director. “But ultimately it comes down to the performers’ image and how they want to represent themselves. I think kids have a lot more sense than people give them credit for. Eventually, they’re going to tune out the sort of sensationalism we're seeing now.
"But you have to understand that there's unnecessary violence and sexual stereotyping all over TV, whether it's 'Dynasty,' a cop show or the news—they're part of our culture. You can knock Motley Crue for their supposedly S&M outfits, but you can buy the same belts you see in their videos at Bendel's for $100 each."
Sloane's colleagues insist that video reflects our cultural values as much as it shapes them. "Our whole society encourages that vacuous 'Flashdance' mentality," said Foti. "Right now there's a lot of pressure on video makers to come up with the most visually stimulating videos possible. I just hope that kids have the intelligence to understand that this isn't the way real life is.
"I think the record industry would like to exercise more control as video develops into a business. Because you have to wonder, if whips and chains are the grabbers today, what's going to come next when the kids get bored with that?"
