HAPPY CATURDAY!
Thank you all for visits, faves and comments! It's greatly appreciated!
A passenger getting off an Astoria-bound N-train has spotted me and is giving me the victory sign :-)
Queensboro Plaza station...
The Victory Monument is located on 35th and Martin Luther King Jr Drive in the historic district of Bronzeville in Chicago, a few blocks from where I lived for over a decade. Even though many things have changed since I've been gone, it felt good being in a familiar territory. Home is always home.
Berlin, Germany
Designed by Heinrich Strack, after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War, by the time it was inaugurated on 2 September 1873, Prussia had also defeated Austria and its German allies in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), giving the statue a new purpose. Different from the original plans, these later victories in the so-called unification wars inspired the addition of the bronze sculpture of Victoria, 8.3 metres (27 ft) high and weighing 35 tonnes, designed by Friedrich Drake. Berliners have given the statue the nickname Goldelse, meaning something like "Golden Lizzy"
The Holga is also getting a bit long in the tooth. When it's very cold, neither the shutter works reliably, nor do my frozen fingers. However, there was obviously a double exposure here. Actually a case for the rubbish bin, but on the other hand the negative looked so interestingly grubby.

Near the end of our Peninsula lies Victory Bay. There's not much but sealions and penguins out there. Early light on sea spray gave the golden mist this morning. Have a good weekend and thanks for visiting and especially for comments.
The Victory Museum on the Poklonnaya Hill at night. Shot from tripod with standard +2 picture control (latest). It was the latest set I did back in 2020 and the last one to post.
Moscow, Russia.
Victory Monument is a bustling Bangkok intersection with a skywalk and makes for a great location to shoot light trails.
Only one problem, tripods are not allowed. But who follows rules :-) Security guard told me NO; I apologized moved a few meters and set up again.

One of the most remarkable public events in Russia is the Victory Day. It is traditionally celebrated on the 9th of May. This patriotic holiday commemorates the victory of the USSR over the Nazi Germany.

Thousands of people, mainly representatives of Berlin’s Russian population, met on 9 May 2020 at the Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park, marking 75 years since the Nazis' unconditional surrender. From the early hours of the morning until late in the evening, they commemorated the end of World War II and the countless victims of this devastating war.
There are hardly any veterans left who could tell about their wartime experiences. In the meantime, their grandchildren have taken over the conductorship in these celebrations, some of them with touching gratefulness and respect, some others in a rather playful tune. But there are also several illustrious and disconcerting individuals and groups who, under the guise of commemoration, are spreading nationalist, history-distorting and war-glorifying slogans. In the emotionally charged memory of a day when peace returned to Europe, they scatter the seeds of new conflicts and confrontations.
My photo story "Victory Day" documents an experience between emotion and scepticism, between grateful remembrance and exuberant party atmosphere.
S.S. Lane Victory
San Pedro, CA
11-18-23
From Wikipedia:
"SS Lane Victory is an American Victory-class cargo ship used in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. The ship was preserved in 1989 to serve as a museum ship in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles, California. As a rare surviving Victory ship, she was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
SS Lane Victory was named after Lane College, which was established as a high school for black youths in 1882 at Jackson, Tennessee, by Isaac Lane, a bishop of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America.
Lane Victory was built in Los Angeles by the California Shipbuilding Corporation and launched on May 31, 1945. On her first voyage, June 27, 1945, Lane Victory carried war supplies in the Pacific. "
The ship was deployed in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and is now a floating museum in the Los Angeles Harbor.
Adapted from the full size figure of Victory on Saint Gaudens's equestrian monument to the Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman (1892-1903;Grand Army Plaza) this winged allegorical figure is pictured as a triumphant guiding post. Her classicizing gown is emblazoned with an a eagle, and she wears a crown of Laurel and holds a palm frond traditional emblems of victory. The windblown pose recalls that of the Hellenistic marble Nike of Samothrace. The principal model for victory was Hettie Anderson,an African American woman who was a favored artists' model in New York during the 1890s.
