Victor Caniato est né en Italie en 1949. A huit ans, il rejoint ses parents émigrés en France. Ouvrier métallurgiste, il découvre l’œuvre de Brancusi, une rencontre décisive qui le conduit à des études artistiques. Il termine ses études à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon en 1979 et obtient le « Prix de Paris ».
Il développe d’abord un art abstrait puis un art figuratif représentant essentiellement l’humain en modelant avec l’argile et le plâtre, des visages et des corps naissants. Une dizaine d’années plus tard, il épure sa démarche et « seule l’évocation de l’humanité devient le sujet central de sa recherche.
« Les matériaux de Victor Caniato relèvent de l’art pauvre des italiens contemporains : du plâtre, des tiges de fer, du polystyrène, du bois de récupération. Il en fait un rocher surmonté d’une maisonnette, un système stellaire dans un rouleau de grillage, un linge abandonné sur un escalier. »
Ces représentations sont issues des images primitives, des contes et légendes qui constituent notre culture commune. C’est ainsi qu’il invente et installe une mythologie polysémique. Son art cherche ainsi à nous parler de nous d’une manière simple et poétique.

Victor Hugo lived on Guernsey from 1856 to 1870 in exile. It's where he wrote 'Les Miserables'. The bench depicts his novel 'Toilers of the Sea' which he dedicated to Guernsey. Posing with my wife and The Western Valley Swing Band.
Dopo 11 anni questo meraviglioso, buonissimo (e fifone) esserino ha lasciato questa terra ma non i nostri cuori. Arrivederci Victor.
After 11 years this wonderful, very good (and scaredy) animal has left this earth but not our hearts. Goodbye Victor.
