WW1 Bomber. This aircraft was a rebuild which actually flew for a while some years ago.

NS 288 rolls under the old coaling tower at Vicker after swinging off the Pulaski District at Walton as they climb towards Christiansburg.

Almost like days gone by at Vickers - Conrail paint leading a hot van train east on a Fall day. The leader is a heritage unit and the symbol is no longer 24M having been changed recently to 28V but it still feels like a scene from 15 years or more ago. Northwood, OH 9/27/2022

The mono version of a previous image. I think this works really well. The aircraft is a VC 10 tanker since retired and on display at R.A.F. Aerospace museum, Cosford, U.K.

The former New York Central water level route was busy just days after the start of Conrail with traffic moved off the former Erie Lackawanna, here an eastbound grain train at Vickers on the east side of Toledo on April 3, 1976 with three PC GP38's leading an EL U33C.

This particular Valiant dropped the UK's first thermo-nuclear weapon. this picture at RAF Marham, (Scanned) dates from 1978-9. The aircraft is now in the RAF Museum at Cosford.

Millbank Tower, London, originally known as Vickers Tower. This grade 2 listed complex once held the title of tallest London building, from construction in 1963, although for just 4 years, being succeeded by The Post Office Tower in 1967.

The complex sits just a stones throw away from the site of the notorious Millbank Prison, of which a large proportion of its inmates were awaiting eventual transportation to the Hulk Ships of Australia.

Shawbury 1961. The Valiant was the first of Britain's 4-engined V-Bomber force. Unfortunately, due to fatigue problems, the type was withdrawn from service in 1965. The only surviving aircraft is on display at Cosford. This particular aircraft was the only one that I ever saw at an airshow.

Although this photo could have done with something a bit more interesting in the foreground I do like the colours and light. It was taken at the now closed Vickers, (formerly Barnbow) tank factory

When it was announced that the 611 excursions on Monday were changed to a morning run to Walton, many got excited at the chance to shoot the coal tower at Vicker in decent lighting. Apparently everyone had the same idea as the crowds were intense that morning, but thankfully the sun cooperated and the plan worked out.

After shooting Amtrak departing town we headed out to Vicker Switch Road with the goal of shooting some morning eastbounds under the famous big concrete coaling tower which still stands straddling the former Norfolk and Western mainline. Due to a broken rail on Main 2 they were single tracking thru here so sent one train west then fleeted three eastbounds our way

First up was NS train 14Z, a Knoxville to Allentown manifest that came off the Pulaski District from Bristol and points south at Walton just a couple miles behind them.

They are approaching the Switchback Road grade crossing on Main 1 of modern day NS' Christianburg District at about MP N295.5 as they pass beneath the famous Vicker coal tower. This imposing structure was built in 1951 as a further example of the N&W's commitment to steam far longer than many other Class 1s. Alas it only served a short nine years before the last fire was dropped in May 1960. Prior to this being built there was a fascinating balloon loop trestle and loaded coal hoppers were spotted atop it to load coal directly from the railcar into the tender of a steam locomotive below. Moments after meeting counterpart train 12T, trash train 11T thunders under the N&W coal tower at Vicker Switch on the NS Christiansburg District.

The 611 heads west on the straightaway at Vicker, just west of Christiansburg. In a few minutes, they'll approach the wye at Walton where they'll spin the train for the trip back east to Roanoke.

Our third eastbound in 30 minutes was NS train 278, a Louisville to Norfolk intermodal that came off the Pulaski District from Bristol and points south at Walton just a couple miles behind them. This was the train of the day featuring a trio of GEs led 25 yr old BNSF 4445, a C44-9W still wearing its relatively decent looking as delivered H2 paint scheme.

They are approaching the Switchback Road grade crossing on Main 1 of modern day NS' Christianburg District at about MP N295.5 as they pass beneath the famous Vicker coal tower and parallel Crab Creek.
