Hanging down to kiss the depths

Vibrating on sweet natures breaths

That make beauty, rise and fall

As it moves through the trees, so tall

Then hangs down to try to sink

Deep inside natures beautiful drink

In grasshoppers, the auditory organs are in a rather unusual location, on the abdomen. On each side of the first abdominal segment, tucked under the wings, you'll find membranes that vibrate in response to sound waves. This simple eardrum, called a tympana, allows the grasshopper to hear the songs of its fellow grasshoppers.

On a lake, under the moon light, there was a bug making the water vibrate...don't know what it was !

In the garden of the sun, the Gerbera blooms, its orange petals vibrating like flames of passion. She dances with grace, a hymn to ephemeral beauty. PACA region

Unique and entertaining manakin found in lush cloud forest in western Ecuador and western Colombia. Wine-red, black, and white male is unlike any other species in range. Feeds on berries, usually at middle levels in the forest. Courtship display is unlike any other. Males hop and strut in neighboring trees at preferred display sites. They flick their wings upward, producing loud beeps by vibrating their feathers at incredibly high speeds. (eBird)

These are amazing birds with very cool mating dances, none of which we ever saw. In fact, we usually saw the drab green females that the males try to attract. But this one made a mistake and exposed himself to our eyes and cameras. So very cool to see this lovely little bird.

Experimenting with Post Focus on the C-Lux. Press the button and a suite of shots sweep through many focal distances. Then select &/or stack. In this case, the web was vibrating in the wind, but still some of the images caught the tiny spider—1cm leg span—and parts of the web.

Because Post Focus uses 4K video, the image size is a little smaller, the crop factor a little bigger, and the effective focal length correspondingly bigger. More useful than I first suspected.

A beard and mustache trimmer in action. The trimmer is similar to hair clippers commonly used by hairstylists, but with a finer-toothed cutter assembly and, instead of a vibrating electromagnetic drive in older models, a motor using a cam pin to smoothly convert rotary motion into the cutter's oscillating motion.

The cutter assembly is one inch (25.4mm) wide.

Also known sometimes as the Indian Peafowl. When the male raises his huge tail of feathers in a giant fan he can also vibrate and make a humming noise with them.

Are these two males serenading in a competition to attract females? They do it in twos and more. After each vocalization they vibrate their wings for another sound effect. I would welcome any informative comment on this behavior.

Two baby wrens one day post fledging. They were sitting on a wee branch just soaking up the evening sun yesterday evening. Various brothers and sisters elsewhere in the hedge were squeaking and making the hedge vibrate. I heard them about 50 yards further up the hedge the day before, and tonight they have moved on somewhere else.

I wish you a year filled with softness, strength, freedom, and moments that truly make you vibrate. May 2026 bring you peace when you need it, boldness when you dare to embrace it, and precious moments to fully savor. And now, I take a deep breath of fresh air, leaning against this door. My outfit protects me, my breath turns into mist. The cold awakens my senses. I watch, I breathe, I welcome this new year with calm, confidence… and the desire to enjoy it fully. ️

The charred remains of the antique shop reignited the unease that had shadowed her ever since she first encountered the mysterious disc. Was the fire connected to it? Why had the disc been there in the first place? And then there was the man—the unsettling figure who had been watching her. She could feel his gaze, like an invisible weight pressing against her skin. And the disc itself… the way it vibrated in her hands. None of it added up.

Adrienne drove aimlessly, giving herself time to think while ensuring she wasn’t being followed. Once home, she lingered in her parked car, scanning the street through the rearview mirror. You’re losing it, she told herself, finally stepping inside.

Inside, she lowered the window shades before heading to the closet. She hesitated before reaching up and taking down the disc, unwrapping it for the first time since that day in the shop. Its worn, ancient surface bore strange, unrecognizable markings. Her fingers traced the intricate details—a clock-like dial, with divisions and arcs that made no sense.

Despite being metal, it was unexpectedly warm. As she cradled it in her hands, the vibration returned—stronger, more deliberate. Then, without warning, a dim glow pulsed from certain areas. She gasped, set it down and stepped back, watching in stunned silence. It had responded the very moment she wondered how it worked. And when she set it down, it stopped.

Adrienne’s pulse thundered in her ears. This isn’t possible. She wrapped the disc back up in a frenzy, shoved it into the closet, and shut the door. Whatever secrets it held, she wasn’t ready to find out. Not yet.

A girl, about Adrienne’s age, sat at the next table—though she hadn’t been there when Adrienne arrived. Dark-haired and intense, she leaned in and whispered again, “Did you activate the device?”

Adrienne swallowed hard. “What do you mean?”

“The device. Did it vibrate and glow?”

Adrienne’s pulse hammered against her ribs. Who was this girl? Where had she come from? Her voice cracked as she admitted, “Yes… I didn’t mean to…”

A faint, knowing smile flickered across the girl’s face. She scanned the room before finally murmuring, “I’m Kayla. I’m a friend. We need to talk.”

Adrienne’s wide-eyed gaze met Kayla’s. “About?”

Kayla hesitated, her eyes darting across the pub. “You’ve been watched, haven’t you?”

Adrienne nodded. “Yes—a man. Maybe more than one. What do they want?”

Kayla moved next to Adrienne and slid close, her voice barely audible. “They want you. And the device. When you activated it, they knew for certain—you’re one of us.”

Adrienne stiffened. “One of us? What does that mean?”

Kayla’s whisper was urgent. “Only certain people can activate the device—people with an extremely rare bloodline. They can’t use it themselves, so they need one of us.”

She paused, then suddenly tensed. “They are here. You’re being hunted”

Adrienne swallowed. “Where?”

Kayla didn’t look—she didn’t dare. “The bartender. Don’t turn around.”

Adrienne shook her head. “No—that’s Steve. I dated him.”

Kayla’s voice was tight. “They shapeshift. That is not the person you know. There are others. We need to get out of here. Quick, follow me to the ladies’ room.”

Inside, Kayla gripped Adrienne’s wrist. “We must leave. NOW. Hold my hand. Do NOT let go.”

Less than a second later, the restroom door burst open.

“Steve” emitted a primal howl in frustration. The girls had vanished.

FOURTEEN It is still, life

(Yawning, Mari awoke from pleasant dreams of sitting in the meadow with Tristan, watching an assortment of wild animals wander through the fragrant grass. She smiled, seeing he was still sleeping, and rose from bed, dressing and freshening up in the bathroom before quietly slipping out to the kitchen to make coffee and breakfast for them both. While the small coffee pot filled, her voice vibrated loudly for attention. Glad she had the foresight to switch it to vibrate.)

Mari:

(recognizing the caller's number, keeps her voice low when she answers) Walter, how are you?

Walter:

I am well. And you? Are you well? I can barely hear you.

Mari:

Sorry, Walter. Tristan's still asleep. I don't want to wake him.

Walter:

Oh, that's good, good. I was worried you might be ... exhausted, from painting, when you did not return.

Mari:

Oh, I see. No, I'm fine. In fact, a managed to produce several canvasses that we sent back to my contact in LA.

Walter:

(sounding worried) You sent the flagae to Los Angeles?

Mari:

(with a small laugh) Oh, no, Walter. Nothing like that. These were outdoor scenes. I painted them in the meadow in front of our cabin. Flowers, trees, some animals, you know.

Walter:

(sounds relieved) Oh, yes, yes, I see. Well, that explains why you have not returned, and you sound so well. You have the fresh air, and no flagae to trouble you.

Mari:

Walter, you always use that word with the paintings I bring you. Is it the name of an artist, or a style you recognize?

Walter:

Yes, a style, yes.

Mari:

You don't sound so sure about that.

Walter:

It is the style, but also the people.

Mari:

You ... recognize the people?

Walter:

Not people, exactly. They are flagae.

Mari:

The people in my paintings are called, flagae? Is that another country?

Walter:

That is one way to put it, yes.

Mari:

How odd. I've never heard of them before. I have no idea how I'd imagine them.

Walter:

One of your paintings had a mirror. Is there a mirror near the place where you paint?

Mari:

(glancing toward the mirror hanging on the wall) Yes, there is.

Walter:

Ah, well, that explains it.

Mari:

Does it?

Walter:

Yes, you paint what you see. And you see flagae in the mirror.

Mari:

(amused) I see myself in the mirror, Walter.

Walter:

You see your flaga in the mirror, not yourself.

Mari:

You mean, my reflection? Flaga is a reflection? I thought you said they were from another country?

Walter:

I said that was one way to put it.

Mari:

A reflection isn't another country. It's just a copy of what's in front of it.

Walter:

Are you near a window?

Mari:

(looking at the enormous bay window) Yes.

Walter:

When you stand near the glass, you look into the world, and you see the trees, the sky, animals, or people, yes?

Mari:

Yes.

Walter:

And the animals, or people, on the other side of the glass can look at you, yes?

Mari:

Yes.

Walter:

It is the same with flagae in the mirror. You look at them, they look at you.

Mari:

(has a little smile, but tells herself not to laugh) I suppose that's true, but it's not really the same. It's a reflection.

Walter:

Yes, yes. But it is still, life.

The cicadas are a superfamily, the Cicadoidea, of insects in the order Hemiptera (true bugs). They have an exceptionally loud song, produced not by stridulation, but by vibrating drumlike tymbals rapidly. The earliest known fossil Cicadomorpha appeared in the Upper Permian period; extant species occur all around the world in temperate to tropical climates. They typically live in trees, feeding on watery sap from xylem tissue and laying their eggs in a slit in the bark. Most cicadas are cryptic, singing at night to avoid predators. The periodic cicadas spend most of their lives as underground nymphs, emerging only after 13 or 17 years, which may reduce losses by starving their predators and eventually emerging in huge numbers that overwhelm and satiate any remaining predators. The annual cicadas are species that emerge every year. Though these cicada have life cycles that can vary from one to nine or more years as underground larvae, their emergence above ground as adults is not synchronized so some appear every year. The Giant Swallowtail butterfly, with a wingspan of about 10–16 cm (3.9–6.3 in), it is the largest butterfly in North America. It is such a large butterfly that it continually vibrates its wings while feeding at flowers so that it does not tilt the blossom.

The quality of this image isn't great as I had to crop it down so much but I'm just in love with the effect of of the light refracting on the vibrating silken spiders web (thanks Craig!) It looks like an Intergalactic battle to me ;-)

As most plovers do, it was using its "foot-trembling" technique to forage here; basically vibrating its feet on the mud to startle small insects and worms into moving to the surface so it can grab them.

A sculpture hanging in the grounds of first church in our city. It was part of an outdoor exhibition marking 100 years since WW1.

Breaking news, we had a 4.7 earthquake just 30 km away at 11:17 pm. Some people were just coming out of the movie San Andreas! I don't think there was much damage but we won't know till the morning. Just shaking and creaking at our house. It felt like someone was shaking my chair and a large mirror vibrated wildly but didn't break.

This moth is closely related to the Common Looper Moth I posted on Nov. 4, but you can see the silver markings are broken into 2 on this one, and there are other differences. The upper left shot shows an unusual triangular pose because when I first brought it in, it vibrated its wings. That didn't last long before it settled down into its normal pose, unlike the other moth which continued to vibrate its wings through our whole shoot.

I posted this large so you can zoom in and wander around to see all those details. I appear to be getting steadier at keeping hand-held sequences aligned, because ZereneStacker is finally able to make lovely focus stacks from the photos I feed it. The upper right image is made of 3 shots, and the lower right is around 7.

Another shot that lacks much of what I want in a photo. My timing had me in a running car, Diesel engine, which tended to vibrate a bit more than gas. So I lost definition, and clear focus. It's still a cool shot, I think. I was in a remote section of the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, outside Savannah, Georgia ( I know, a DUH moment, but well...). The Woodstork landing had nearly every Egret looking up. I wondered if the Woodstork had shouted in bird think, make way, crash landing. The Woodstorks already there, ignored him, as did the Great Blue Herons.

I was in our back yard this morning looking for hummingbirds when I heard this rattling noise. I thought maybe it was a roadrunner. They vibrate their beaks to make a rattling noise. Sure enough, I saw 2 of them on the wall between us and our neighbor. They spent quite a bit of time in our yard. Actually, mostly on the roof. But I did have one hop down and visit me on the deck. Its not super uncommon to see roadrunners here in the Phoenix area, but its not exactly common either. Usually I see them, you know, running down the road. So it was fun to have two visit up close and personal in our yard. If you’re not familiar with them, roadrunners are of the cuckoo family and are about the size of a crow. A photo of the whole bird in the first comment

All the strings of a cello vibrate even if only a single string is plucked, as in this photo where the G-string (second from the left) was plucked.

Shot for Macro Monday, Sound (Photo is cropped to about 7cm square.)

I got interested in this instrument last year. After the first one, I was hooked and bought a second one, then a third...

They all have their proper timber and character.

I guess that counts as a collection, right?

A jew's harp (or jaw harp) consists of a rigid metal frame and a flexible reed or tongue attached to it and vibrating between ist legs. You play it by gently pressing the frame against your teeth, mouth slightly open and lips sealing the space above and below the frame. You then swing the reed towards you, let it vibrate freely and use the cavity of the mouth as a resonance chamber, its shape impacting the tone, and your breath to add rhythmic and create more harmonics.

You quickly get the hang of it. But beware the dreaded "clong!" in case your teeth are not open enough and you hit them with the reed!

"Music, when soft voices die, vibrates in the memory."

When the lens focuses, the world around fades away. The gaze becomes the essence, details emerge, and light dances around the curves. This portrait was born from an experiment: capturing the soul in an artistic blur, where every pixel seems to vibrate under the effect of a new angle. It’s just a test, but sometimes, experiments reveal unexpected beauty

The shot I wanted to get this weekend, Roanoke city from the Star. The star is huge and sits on Mill Mountain above the city and is lit up at night. I tried and tried to get a good clear shot and couldn't figure out why the lights were blurred. Had the camera on a tripod. Used a shutter release. Must have taken 50 shots before it dawned on me. I was on an overlook deck made of wood along with 60 or more other people coming and going and the deck was vibrating! Best shot here and I'm going with it. Had a fantastic day yesterday and looking for more of the same today. And now...now I better get a move on because as you may expect Anita pops out of bed and is instantly on the go. Me.... not so much! LOL

A little male bunting displaying for a female. They vibrate their wings incredibly fast. Seeing a lot of PABUs this Spring. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Rotterdam Zuid, Maastunnel.

Yesterday the good ol’ Maastunnel in Rotterdam had its 77th anniversary. To celebrate this, the tunnel for pedestrian (the lowest of the three tunnels the Maastunnel actually consists of) was transformed to a ‘Tunnel of Love’. Very much the same way as the Dommeltunnel during Eindhoven Glow festival (2011): the normal lighting is changed to black lighting and the wall and ceilings are covered with heart-shaped reflective stickers. In addition to the Dommeltunnel (shown: here ) in the Maastunnel thee pavement was covered with a black wooden walkway, also with the heart stickers. Which made the visual effect more immersive. (users of tripods beware: the wooden walkway vibrates due to the many visitors passing by - this shot was handheld). Both the Dommeltunnel and the Maastunnel were transformed by: Studio Vollaerszwart.

Considering the somewhat checkered reputation of the Maastunnel - before the installation of camera's and the permanent presence of security personnel some ten years ago, the pedestrian and cyclists tunnels were scary and 'socially unsafe'- so there's some irony in the transformation and its title.

Check out the soundtrack, it alas wasn’t part of the list of syrupy songs that were played in the tunnel: Dire Straits: Tunnel of love.

Number 12 of the Tunnel vision album.

May 2023: I was very excited to hear that the Pin-tailed Wydah had been seen again in Singapore this year. Great weather this morning enabled everyone to get great pics of the courtship display. Truly stunning to photograph and observe.

“The male performs superb courtship displays during which the spectacular long tail plays an important role. It performs an aerial mating dance with hovering flight above the female during which the tail is flicked up and down while it sings continuously. It performs circular flights while dancing and vibrating. Displays occur low over the ground”

*Off to Baltimore today! Have a great Friday and weekend amigas y amigos!!!

*Fandango. A form of Flamenco,a lively Spanish music and dance in triple time performed with castanets or tambourines. The dance begins slowly and tenderly, the rhythm marked by the clack of castanets, snapping of fingers, and stomping of feet. The speed gradually increases to a whirl of exhilaration.
