Photo taken with a drone flying very low over the incoming surf. Near Round Island Park.

A male painted bunting feeding at the bird feeder. This young male seems to be the only one that has not migrated north yet.

A very busy bee.

It seems that hurricane Irma really stirred up the Blue Land Crabs. I don't think I have ever seen so many at one time.

As I was driving down A1A I noticed the driver in front of me swerving several times. I decided I'd better keep a safe distance because he must have had quite a bit to drink. I soon realized he was swerving to avoid Blue Land Crabs crossing the road. It's a good idea to avoid hitting them as they can take out a tire if you're not lucky. Not only that, but they are amazing, and unique creatures, and I'd hate to be responsible for removing one from this Earth.

Hurricane Nicole made landfall at 3 am on November 9th, 2022 just south of Vero Beach, Florida. This photo was taken about 12 hours later. People walking on the beach in Vero Beach as heavy surf was still washing in.

A Spinybacked orbweaver, (Gasteracantha cancriformis) which is also called a Crablike spiny orbweaver and locally often referred to as the clownfaced orbweaver. Common in the southern United States, especially Florida, as well as the Caribbean, it is an invasive species in Hawaii. Gasteracantha cancriformis is the only known species of its genus found in the New World with many species of the same genus found in the Old World.

Where I spent the day as our democracy slowly ebbed away...

I see these spiders quite often while hiking this time of year.

An Agama on Round Island. I'm guessing that the Iguanas will start showing up in Vero within the next 10 years or so. Global warming is allowing them to expand their range in Florida.

The Polydamas swallowtail lucayus subspecies is normally found in peninsular Florida but occasionally found in other Gulf of Mexico states and as far north as Missouri and Kentucky. The Polydamas swallowtail is the only swallowtail found in the United States, that has no tails.

The African Red Headed Agama is an invasive species in Florida. Fortunately they do not carry disease, and are not venomous. The male is larger and has a red head and a large band of red on the tail. These were first spotted on the Treasure Coast in Stuart in 2003. This is the first year I have seen them in Vero Beach. Global warming will ensure that they continue to expand northward up the peninsula.
