University of Western Australia (UWA) is a public research university in the Australian state of Western Australia. The university's main campus is in Crawley, a suburb in the City of Perth local government area. UWA was established in 1911 by an act of the Parliament of Western Australia.
UWA is the oldest university in Western Australia (WA) and the sixth-oldest in Australia. It is classed as one of the "sandstone universities", an informal designation given to the oldest university in each state.
UWA is a member of the Group of Eight, which consists of the eight most research-intensive and best-ranked Australian universities. UWA is also a member of the international Matariki Network of Universities.
UWA is ranked in the world's top 200 universities, according to several highly respected publications. Another defining characteristic of UWA is that it has retained its convocation as an integral part of its governance structure. All UWA graduates are automatically lifelong members of the university through convocation, which grants them the right to attend annual general meetings, elect two members of the university senate, and review any changes to university legislation.
UWA graduates include Prime Minister of Australia Bob Hawke, five justices of the High Court of Australia (including Chief Justice Robert French, now Chancellor), Governor of the Reserve Bank H. C. Coombs, various federal cabinet ministers, and seven of Western Australia's eight most recent premiers. In 2018 alumnus Akshay Venkatesh received the Fields Medal. As of 2021, the university had produced 106 Rhodes Scholars. Two members of the UWA faculty, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, won Nobel Prizes as a result of research at the university.
This is a single exposure taken with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 1/15 sec f/6.3 ISO 500 451mm. Thank you to Kamala Venkatesh for suggesting this location and meeting up to shoot the moon here. The brush in the foreground is a bit blurry due to the wind as well as the aperture setting.
Located in the southeast corner of California, the Imperial Sand Dunes (aka "Glamis") are the largest mass of sand dunes in the state.
Formed by windblown sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla, the dune system extends for more than 40 miles in a band averaging 5 miles wide. Dunes often reach heights of 300 feet above the desert floor, providing outstanding opportunities for recreation. A favorite place for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts, the dunes also offer fabulous scenery, opportunities for solitude, and a home to rare plants and animals.
August’s full Moon was traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

The full moon rises over and behind the weathervane atop the California Tower in San Diego's Balboa Park.
These are single exposure shots. It's all about perspective and alignment to make the moon look larger than life.
Shot tonight (October 1, 2020) with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600mm lens at 1/160 sec f/6.3 ISO 1600 600mm.
Thank you to Kamala Venkatesh and Stephen Bay for picking this location and inviting me to join you two.
The California Building with its ornate facade and blue-and-gold dome, together with the adjoining California Tower, are among the most recognizable landmarks in San Diego. They house the San Diego Museum of Man. The design and ornamentation combine many style elements including Gothic, Plateresque, Baroque, Churrigueresque, and Rococo to create the impression of a Spanish Colonial church.
The California Tower is 198 feet (60 m) tall and is open for public tours as of January 1, 2015. The tower's design is Spanish while the details and color are Mexican in style. The tower is composed of three tiers that shift from a quadrangle to an octagon and then a circle. There is a Maas-Rowe carillon in the tower, first installed in 1946 and replaced in 1967. The carillon can be heard throughout the park. It plays the Westminster Chimes every quarter-hour, and a resident carillonneur plays three songs at noon every day.[10] The tower has been described as "San Diego's Icon," the most photographed and best-known landmark in San Diego.
The State of California paid the $250,000 cost to develop the California Building and Tower for the 1915 Exposition. Although California owned the building, it was turned over to the San Diego government in 1926.[7] During the Exposition the California Building was the home of the Expo's theme exhibit, an anthropological display called "The Story of Man through the Ages." After the Expo ended, the exhibit was retained and expanded, eventually becoming the San Diego Museum of Man. In 2020, the museum was renamed to Museum of Us.

Some nice star trails under a nearly full moon. The moon (out of frame and mostly behind the camera) provided some very nice natural lighting of the chimneys, other stonework, and landscape here. I was still able to capture some nice star trails despide the bright moon. Shot with a Canon 6D and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens. This is a stack of 157 exposures each at 30 sec f/4.5 ISO 400 for a total of 78.5 seconds. The fireplaces were illuminated with LED candles.
Kamala Venkatesh joined me to shoot moonrise here. Our original plan was to shoot the moon rising over the chimneys, but the moon just didn't line up well. Then we decided to stick around and shoot these star trails instead.
The property is owned by the County of San Diego with oversight and/or management by other preservation organizations, has changed hands many times. In 1893, it was owned by John MacVane. Dr. George Brace purchased the property but deeded it to his wife, Marta Oatman Brace, in 1932. It was around this timeframe that the Craftsman-style house was built, partially by locally-sourced stones. Marta Brace sold the property to James and Barbara Hollis in 1946 and they sold the property to Walter and Geraldine Nass in 1951. Adnan Derbas purchased the beautiful home overlooking Lake Hodges from the Nass family and his son still lived on the property when it was destroyed by the 1997 Del Dios Fire.

Tonight's nearly full moon over a herd of cattle in Ramona Grasslands.
Shot on March 3, 2020 with a Canon EOS R and Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens at 1/640 sec f/7.1 ISO 400 238 mm.
Kamala Venkatesh joined me on tonight's photo adventure. We had hoped to capture the moon rising just above the mountains, but the clouds got in the way. Still, I think the clouds added some nice drama to this scene.
It's nice to see these cows freely roaming the pasture here verses being confined to the factory farms we often hear about.
Ramona Grasslands County Preserve sits in the Santa Maria Valley between scenic coastal mesas and the rocky outcrops of the peninsula mountain ranges. Hikers, cyclists and equestrians alike can explore this 3,521-acre preserve, however, not all acreage is open to the public; some land is closed to protect sensitive resources along with the natural beauty of the area. Visit on your own or attend a docent-led interpretive excursions – both lead to open breathtaking panoramic views.
Private cattle are permitted to graze on the land as it is beneficial to several high priority species utilizing the loamy grasslands, e.g., Stephens’ kangaroo rat (SKR) and raptors. Grazing helps reduce wildfire dangers as well.
Nice colorful rainbow and ominous clouds over Borrego Springs, California. Shot from a turnoff on the Montezuma Grade on Monday.
Originally I wasn't going to head out here due to there being 20 MPH and higher winds in the forecast. Later in the morning, Kamala Venkatesh messaged me and asked if I was interested in going. I then figured I had nothing to lose but possibly time since I had no real estate shoots due to the rain in most of the county (except for the desert) and decided to head out.
When we got to Anza-Borrego, the wind was mostly mild and even calm at times. And no rain either. Also, there were some nice ominous clouds in the sky. It was a perfect day for photography.
The Milky Way galaxy forms an arch over a nice forest of pine trees up in Mount Laguna, California.
I produced this panorama from 11 frames each shot at 15 sec f/2.8 ISO 4000 with a Canon 6D and my trusty Sigma 15mm EX DG lens. I softly illuminated the fallen tree using the screen on my phone. These frames were taken about 40 minutes before moonrise on Saturday June 22, 2019. As with the photo from here I posted the other day, I went with Kamala Venkatesh. Weather conditions were perfect - no wind, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures.
Mount Laguna is a small census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. It is approximately 6000 ft above sea level in a forest of Jeffrey pine, east of San Diego in the Laguna Mountains on the eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest (named after former president Grover Cleveland). The hamlet sits at the high point of a scenic drive on Sunrise Highway from Interstate 8 to Highway 79. Mount Laguna consists of a small general store, rustic lodge and cabins, local restaurant, rural post office, and campgrounds adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail. The Laguna Mountain Recreation Area surrounds the village, and the visitor's center for the pine-covered area is located here. The mountain backcountry of San Diego County is high enough to receive snowfall in winter months, and the Mount Laguna region offers locally-unique winter recreation in the form of snow play, sledding, and cross country skiing for several days after larger storms.
Saturday November 14th, 2020 was the final night of the bridge lighting test run. I captured this image of the three bridge columns illuminated in different colors. The star trails were created from a stack of 132 exposures of 30 seconds each. Total exposure time is 66 minutes.
I shot this from Coronado Tidelands Park with a Canon EOS R and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens. Kamala Venkatesh joined me again.
The week of technical testing was to evaluate the lighting design that has been developed to date, its technical functionality and its ability to effectively display the range of artistic color lighting as originally envisioned.
The proposed San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge Lighting Project envisions a colorful, illuminated canvas across San Diego Bay – a programmable LED lighting installation, powered from sustainable energy sources, which will create a unique aesthetic identity for the bridge and the bay after dark. It’s intended to create a distinctive and timeless artwork for the region that will enliven the public environment and celebrate a recognized San Diego landmark.
The project is being managed through a partnership between the Port of San Diego and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), which has jurisdiction over, operates, and maintains the 2.12-mile bridge. The project is intended to be entirely funded through donations. The Port provides leadership for the project and managed the selection process for an artist group that will design one of the unique lighting programs intended for future display on the illuminated canvas. The Design Team is a combined European and North American group led by artist Peter Fink of Studio Fink, LTD in collaboration with architectural lighting specialists Speirs+Major Associates, and Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, Inc., which has practical experience in large-scale lighting projects and an extensive, award-winning track record of creativity.
Nice Milky Way galaxy core appears over a pair of metal art dinosaur sculptures at Galleta Meadows in Borrego Springs. These sculptures are the work of Ricardo Breceda. You can visit Ricardo Breceda’s Art Gallery in Aguanga, California.
Shot with a Canon EOS R, Sigma 24 mm f/1.4 lens, and a Hoya Red Starscape light pollution filter on May 12, 2023.
Note: These sculptures are on private land - of which the public is welcome to visit - and are not inside the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
The late Dennis Avery (of Avery Labels fame) donated the land and now his children maintain the property.
Mr. Avery had 130 large scale, free-standing, metal sculptures produced by artist Ricardo Breceda, and referred to them as Sky Art. Spread over 1500+ acres of undeveloped desert land, these larger than life creations welcome the public to discover and enjoy art outdoors, surrounded by the rich and diverse desert environs of Borrego Springs.
The Under the Sun Foundation seeks to breathe new life and meaning into the existing sculptures.
Thank you to Kamala Venkatesh for asking me to go on a very last-minute trip out here to photograph the Milky Way. We were originally going to go to Julian, but the fog and clouds rolled in. Fortunately the skies were nice and clear down here in the desert.

I went on another photo adventure with Kamala Venkatesh in Balboa Park tonight. We started out shooting sunset in Alcazar Gardens, but then moved to the Cabrillo Bridge after noticing that the sunset only looked good lower on the horizon.
This image was shot with a Canon 6D and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 6 sec f/18 ISO 50 40mm. I used a low ISO and narrow aperture so that I could do a somewhat long exposure to capture the car light trails even though the sky was still fairly light. Highway 163 below and a portion of the San Diego city skyline in the background.
Nice reflection on Los Peñasquitos Lagoon in the foreground. Shot with a Canon 6D and Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens at 1/2000 sec f/4 ISO 640 38mm.
Had a nice time shooting sunset and trains with Kamala Venkatesh tonight.
The Pacific Surfliner is a 350-mile (560 km) passenger train service operated by Amtrak, serving the communities on the coast of Southern California between San Diego and San Luis Obispo.
The service carried 2,924,117 passengers during fiscal year 2016, a 3.4% increase from FY2015. Total revenue during FY2016 was $73,020,267, an increase of 3.6% over FY2015.[1] The Pacific Surfliner is Amtrak's third-busiest service (exceeded in ridership only by the Northeast Regional and Acela Express), and the busiest outside the Northeast Corridor.
I have to admit that this shot took a bit of effort and hurt myself.
I got into the running water despite the warning board saying "Slippery surface". While getting to the spot to get this angle, I slipped and got half the body wet and hurt my right arm. Luckily nothing happened to my camera and tripod that I carried. The result of the shot compromised the pain :)

Bardspec (Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson Official feat. Kevin Hufnagel of Gorguts)
The BARDSPEC is the Ambient project of Enslaved composer/guitarist Ivar Bjørnson. This showcase will feature the set-up of Bjørnson: his computer, some keys, a few strings, a pedal or two, a video canon and sometimes, a trapeze artist. Dark, surprisingly rhythmic and hypnotic-psychedelic, yet minimizing, cutting away, subtracting and meditating upon the simplest essence of things, Bardspec uses of the best of the basic elements and building blocks that make up the whole to create a sonic atmosphere. Here, he will be joined by none other than Gorguts guitarist Kevin Hughes.
Einar Selvik Workshop - "The Thoughts and Tools Behind Wardruna":
Einar speaks about his approach to Norse historical music and the extensive creative concept behind Wardruna´s ongoing Runaljod trilogy. Other topics will include his approach and study of the runes and other Norse esoteric arts, the oldest Nordic instruments, playfully acoustic Wardruna music, including the newest release of the trilogy, "Ragnarok" and a Q&A segment.
This showcase is limited to 150 tickets only. Tickets are on sale from tomorrow, June 23rd, 10AM EST: www.scandinaviahouse.org/event/concerts/.

“2016 is Enslaved's 25th anniversary as a band, and it is simply not acceptable leaving the US out of our celebrations. With a crazy schedule set for the year, we were turning every stone for an opening - and we found one! We are extremely proud to be able to present a double set in New York; to give the full width of old and new material, in conclusion of a fantastic year of celebration. When we started talking about By Norse and how we could bring the concept out into the world; "New York By Norse" was one of the first ideas to be verbalized. At the time it seemed more like a dream scenario than anything else. Then came London By Norse in March earlier this year; our first materialization of the concept - and it was a massive success! Turns out all these crazy visions were possible to turn into real life after all... and here we are.“ - Ivar Bjørnson Official of Enslaved.
