Above is a glimpse of the garden in front of the famous Vellore Fort !
You can see this frozen smile of the Dhwarapalaka at the Ranganatha temple at Erukkampattu near Melpadi, Vellore district, Tamilnadu !!! This is one of the two lovely dhwarapalakas made of green granite found in the 9th century Rashtrakuta temple built by Krishna III.

Pancha Pandava Malai seems to have been a flourishing Jaina center from ninth to eleventh centuries as evident from inscriptions on and near this area. The name Pancha Pandava Malai is associated with Pandavas, the heroes of Mahabharata. As per an inscription of Chola king Parantaka I found in a structural temple in this village, it is suggested that in the first half of tenth century, this town was under the strong influence of the Jaina ascetics.

The Jalakanteshwara temple in Vellore was built in the late Vijayanagar style. There is a wonderful kalyana mandapa (Marriage hall) which is a treasurehouse of amazing stone sculptures.

A gulmohar blooms happily with the majestic idol of Lord Muruga (Karthik) in the background. Shot at Palamathy, a hill temple near my house using a 500 mm Tamron mirror lens.

This beautiful carpenter bee ( Xylocopa ) was hovering in mid-air near the lemon tree in my garden. Unfortunately it couldn't find a flower there. After buzzing around for some time it flew away in search of nectar somewhere else !!
A far off gooseberry tree provided a perfect green backdrop for the bee in flight !!!

You need not get scared by this colourful little fellow because he is a male mosquito and he won't bite you. Females bite humans and suck their blood as they require the protein in the blood for breeding. Otherwise plant sap and nectar are the staple food of mosquitoes !!!
How to differentiate a male from a female ? The antennae are thick and bushy for males.

Saw this colourful grasshopper in my portico today. This is called a "Painted grasshopper".
For the interested souls here are some facts about grasshoppers !!!
€There are 18,000 kinds of grasshoppers in the world.
€The grasshopper can live in all kinds of habitats.
€The colors of the painted grasshopper warn birds not to eat them.
€Painted grasshoppers hatch in May or June.
€The Painted Grasshopper is yellow, black, orange and white.
€The painted grasshopper lives in the western part of the United States.
€The longest grasshopper is eleven cm long.
€Grasshoppers are herbivores.
€Grasshoppers go through incomplete metamorphosis.
€Grasshoppers have no ears. They hear with an organ called tympanum.
€Most types of grasshoppers have two pairs of wings.
€Grasshoppers have five eyes.
€When the female lays her eggs, she covers them with a paste-like liquid that will protect them during the winter.
€Nymphs grow for 40 to 60 days before they become adults.
€Some grasshoppers rub their wings together to create music, others snap their wings together while flying, and others just rub their hind legs across their front wings.

A Tawny coster butterfly ( Acraea terpsicore) is enjoying its feast of nectar from a tridax flower !!! Spotted this in Vellore fort !!!

I completely missed these cute spiderlings (around 2mm in size ) when I tried to shoot the mother lynx.
When viewed through the viewfinder, wow, I found an active miniature world
functioning under the watchful eyes of the mother, comfortably camaflouged in the green leaf !!
I used a Canon 50D with 55-250mm armed with a Raynox DCR250 add-on macro lens !!

I used an external flash (vivitar) with an off-camera flash cord !! I held the flash gun
sideways instead of the usual burst in the front. I like the result.
Used a reversed 24mm prime lens (tokina) along-with a 36mm extn tube.

Jalakandeswarar Temple - Situated inside the Vellore Fort, this temple boasts of a majestic Gopuram (tower). Here Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of "Jalakandeswarar". The temple is located at sub-ground levels than the temple moat, hence the name Jalakandeswarar.
The time after the rain stops is simply great to make photos, with clear atmosphere, freshly drenched green leaves and the omnipresent drops !!!
